We're meeting with the contractor that did our kitchen this afternoon to talk about bathrooms. I've got a pretty good idea of what I want in DH's and my bathroom, but I can't seem to settle on details like tile shape/size/color for the floor and niches for the hall/kids' bath. Wall color very light gray (gray is the neutral throughout the house) or maybe a less saturated shade of the tile? Probably tall white wainscoting with towel hooks on the empty wall. I think I want a stained wood vanity, not painted. HALP.
I think I want this tile for the tub/shower walls:
I do love that tile, but would worry about it looking dated very quickly. For $$$ items in a remodel, I personally, try to go for more traditional colors/styles and bring in additional color and styles through things like paint and accessories, but that is just me. I think you can't go wrong with a subway tile on the walls, it can look both modern and traditional depending on the overall look that you are going for.
For the floors, I love Penny Tile. You could do a Carrara with lots of grey which would look awesome with a stained vanity and the teal colored tile if you go with that.
I love the look of a floating vanity if that's your thing.
I really love that teal, but my own experience with trying wall paint in that color wasn't a win when we reno'ed our full bath about 9 months ago. My biggest piece of advice is to be honest with yourself about how much light is (artificially?) added to those inspiration pics just for the photo, vs. how much light your real bathroom has on a daily basis. Before we demo'ed, while still in the finish selection process, we painted the walls SW Blue Peacock to see how we liked it. It was supposed to go with these other materials, mostly pretty light and bright.
But even with our old bathroom fixtures being mostly white, the bathroom ended up feeling more like a cave, and not at all like the inspiration pics you have (or that I was looking at). It wouldn't have worked at all for putting on makeup, etc.
(obviously only 1-2 coats) (you can see how dark it got the second you got away from the vanity light.)
I loved the color too much to give up on it, so I ended up painting our half bath Blue Peacock. It didn't need painting, was fine how it was, I just really wanted that color somewhere, lol. In the half bath, you don't really need brightness because it's just a powder room, so it works better in there.
(3 coats/finished) (2 coats/a little more of the bathroom for context)
For the full bath, we went back to the drawing board and chose all new materials. We stayed with the teal/green/aqua family, but much MUCH less depth of color. I wish I had better pics of the finished bath, but happy to share some that I have on my phone from toward the end.
Final choices: (for paint we went with SW Quietude, 2nd from bottom of the options)
and a few pics after the gut and install:
It was an intentional choice on our part to keep the tile/$$$ items relatively neutral. We don't have any plans to sell the house, but you never know. I also know that after 10 years in the house, my opinions have changed a little, and I wanted to leave myself a little room to change my mind on how the bathroom looks. I could always repaint the walls a different green/blue or a greige if I wanted, and I like having a little flexibility there.
Sigh, I know you're all probably right on the dark tile (we're adding a light in the shower and the tile would likely just be in the shower but it's a windowless bathroom) and that's why the room won't come together for me. I feel like we've done super basic, neutral finishes everywhere in the house and I wanted something fun in here. Should probably stick to neutral for the permanent stuff though and have fun with the paint/linens/shower curtain/etc.
I was already planning white subway in our shower with gray marble (or marble look) hex for the floor and niches, so it would streamline things to do the same but with penny tile for variety in the hall bathroom.

I don't think you have to scrap the teal tile entirely. I'd be worried about doing a whole wall in that color, but I think you could bring it in as an accent tile and make it really fun without being overwhelming. My google searches keep pulling stuff from pinterest (which work hates, so I can't link), but there are a ton of options out there.
For a smaller bathroom space like that, I love the idea of “fancy” patterned tile layout. I would still stick in the grey/white family, that way your accent tile really pops.
