"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
The story from the beginning was odd and nonsensical but I thought it was some business or personal issue that went bad and he was lying to cover up whatever was going on. I didn’t think he set the whole thing up himself though. That’s something else.
It seems like one of his siblings talked to the prosecutor about the case and their suspicions. I’d love to know which one. I think Jojo’s been quiet. Easter/Passover is going to be awkward this year.
My speculation is that he’s just an asshole. I thought he was just a weirdo before this incident, but I obviously underestimated him.
I thought jerk too, but this takes an extraordinary amount of ”dont-give-a-damn” that it almost seems unreal that a person mentally healthy could do this and think they’re getting away with it.

I suspect likely he has experienced his fair share of bullying in his lifetime. Plus he’s in a field that draws people who thrive on attention and need to stay relevant. My thinking - based on these two things- is that he has a strong desire for sympathy and/or attention and may have decided to manufacture a scenario that drew supporters to his side.
Of course, he could also just be an asshole, but I think that’s lsss likely. I’ve never watched the show because I haven’t watched any series besides Bubble Guppies and Daniel Tiger since K was born in 2013, and hadn’t heard of him before this, so I don’t have a personal attachment to or prior knowledge of him. But I do feel sorry for him.

very true. Maybe this is the Trump derangement syndrome everyone talks about. Or just par for the course in Hollyweird. I really don’t put a lot of behaviors past people who have been in that bubble as long as he has.
I can't wrap my head around this. I don't understand why in the first place or how he thought he would get away with it. I guess I am trying to rationalize the irrational, but weighing what he could have got out of this if not caught doesn't compare to what will happen now that he has.

Didnt he receive a death threat prior to this that the cops didn't take that seriously? He probably felt he got blown off and said " let them blow off this incident." I don't think one has to be mentally ill to understand why he upped the ante thinking he would finally be taken seriously, though, off course, it was taken seriously which lead to his arrest, lol. Dumb move Jussie.

H suggested mental illness for the same reason, factoring in that he allegedly sent himself the harassing letter.
There are definitely a few psychiatric diagnoses that could contribute to this, and if so I hope he gets the help he needs.

I think I read somewhere that they were thinking he might have set the letter up as well. Something about finding potential evidence in the brothers’ home that matched the letter materials.

I saw him calling himself the gay Tupac for fighting back the attackers. So I wouldn't say he is sick or needs help. It seems to me like he did this for attention and to be relevant to be the face of something, he was very aware of what he was orchestrating. They're also investigating if he sent himself the threatening letter and white powder on set which is looking like he may have and did this stunt because the letter didnt get any attention. Crying wolf is a shameless act.

Histrionic Personality Disorder and Narcissistic Personality Disorder are a real mental illnesses and could contribute to behavior like this.
I don't think someone has to be mentally ill to lie about something like this.
They don't HAVE to be.
But if we (as a nation, not a board) are going to jump to mental illness as an explanation for school shootings, I figure we should give equal opportunity to brush a broad stroke for something like this.
He could very well just be an attention-seeking asshole without a mental illness and not a care in the world for downstream impact.
All i know is i'm pissed for the people who do face these attacks because just like rape victims, they face doubt and disbelief when they do come forward, and therefore no justice.

AP is reporting he definitely sent the letter, and it was done to promote his career and increase his salary. I don't post here much, but I check in and read, and I've followed this pretty closely, as it sounded odd from the beginning.

I am waiting to hear from Smollett or those close to him before I assume mental illness. Maybe it's my recent mindset, but I sort of feel like you don't have to be mentally ill do something that is against your moral character, you just have to justify that action to yourself somehow. Also doesn't mean that it negates who he is completely, but it's going to probably hurt his career and have major legal/life consequences.
It also doesn't make me believe victims less, but I'm not the target audience who would jump to that conclusion, I'm guessing.

Wow. Well, he definitely got attention! Lol. That is crazy. I also remember right after the incident that his neighbor was interviewed and said he made it up. It was.... kinda odd...but right on point.

I thought thought Qasim Rashid summed it up very well: (@muslimiq is a great follow!!)
An honest person is not more upset about Smollett’s single lie that DIDN’T inspire terrorism than he is about 45’s 8000+ lies that CONTINUE to inspire terrorism.

TR Yeah, I get it- I guess I appreciated the symbolism in identifying the super-anti-Smollett crowd as pretty MAGA. So even though I realize describing the Smollett case as a “lie” is a bit of over-simplification, I appreciated his pointing out that the same people who are outraged by the Smollett case willingly accept “alternative facts” out of #45’s mouth multiple times everyday with no problem.
