All girls high school and we all wore long white dresses. Which looked nice but is $$$.
Me too, but not an all girls high school. Boys wore blue suits. The 80s were not a great time for long white dresses and I had to make my own. Yes, felt all Pretty in Pink. But I would have preferred either black gowns or something else.
We didn’t have that where I grew up. The school robes were the darker color. Our school colors were navy and gold so School robes were navy. The other high school was green and gold so robes were hunter green. School robes in college were black.
I’ve never heard of this before but the having to wear white with all white underneath would definitely make me angry aside from the other gender issues.

I also went to an all girls school and we wore white robes with white dresses under them (so they wouldn’t show through). Finding a white dress was nearly impossible but then all my friends borrowed it in college when they got inducted in to their sororities.
I went to a public high school, and we alternated girl-boy-girl-boy with girls in white robes and boys in blue. It was SUCH A PITA because the robes were so thin that they were practically see-through and all the girls were required to wear an all-white dress. Far less restriction on the boys.
The girls were also officially required to wear "white closed-toe heels" but thankfully that nonsense wasn't enforced. Mostly because finding white pumps in the late 90s in summer was pretty much impossible. So most girls were in white open-toe heels.
I am 100% on board for single-color robes. And not white.
Girls wore white, guys wore green at my HS. And we were required to wear all white underneath them which was a huge pain in the ass. Guys could wear whatever as long as it wasn’t jeans, which is bogus.
Good for this school.
Well that's complete bullshit. Smacks of gender-based-punitive dress codes, which districts are also starting to move away from (not fast enough, IMO).

I agree. This was 13 years ago. No idea if it’s still true there.
Having all girls schools wear white for graduation is just loaded with symbolism.
Yep. We made lots of jokes at my all girls catholic high school about this.
I was still glad we at least got to wear robes at all, unlike the other all girls school in town where they practically wore white wedding dresses to graduation (and carried a bouquet of red roses). Whole thing gave off an eerie virgin bride feel.
We did red roses too. 😂
But then you get to throw petals in the air
And actually, we had a co-ed elementary school and the girls still wire white and boys wore blue suits maybe?
My school changed the gender robe colors bc of trans students. If a school with 322 years worth of graduating classes can change "tradition", everyone can.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

Our high school is considering the same this year. I remember getting pissed when I graduated (20 years ago) that the gowns were gender specific. I can't believe they still do this?
