DS is 33 mos and we’ve decided to give it a go. Day one and it’s... not going super well. We’ve caught him peeing and rushed him to the potty a number of times. Tried cloth training pants which catch the mess but it’s hard to tell if he wants to go, so now we’re trying naked from the waist down.
We have a sticker chart and a bowl full of candies for rewards. He’s excited about it but doesn’t take initiative to use the potty or even seem to really notice too much when he pees.
We are training DD2 today, she turned 2 last week. So far so good, we are doing undies only and haven’t had any accidents yet. We are skipping nap cause she hasn’t pooped yet and I didn’t want her to save it for her nap diaper.
We’ve been having her sit about every hour or so and she’s proactively done it once or twice I think. I think getting her to try and poop is going to be our problem. We also have given her one m&m for each pee and that seems super motivational for her.
I have very clear memories of taking both of my boys to the bathroom every 15 minutes during the first day of potty training. This early in the process I wouldn't rely on him to tell you (or even to consistently know) when he needs to go.
The first day ALWAYS sucks. They are learning a new skill. Be consistent and he will get it.
We did a 3 day method using timed pottysits which worked great.
Main thing is be consistent.
I figure if my SN 3 r old could get it pretty much any kid will get it if you are consistent
How often did you take your child to the potty?
Every 15 minutes for the first half of the day then 30 minutes after 3 successes.
Pushed lots of fluids (even let her have juice) so she would need to go then praised successes and gave 1 M&Ms (you can use stickers or whatever small thing works) Misses were treated neutrally (pee goes in the potty) and cleaned up.
My DS doesn't initiate at all and he's been PT for 6 weeks. If it's been 1.5-2 hours (or sooner if he's guzzled a bunch of water) and he hasn't gone I just say it's time to try. From the start we've been saying "listen to your body and let me know when you need to pee". We didn't do the timed peeing though. He was naked from the waist down for the first 3ish days. And then commando until 3 days ago. So for roughly a month. We roughly followed the Oh Crap Potty Training book. He got one m&m for pee/2 for poop for the first 3-4 weeks and now just the 2 for poop. Poop has been a struggle. Just in the last week he started going in the toilet in addition to a diaper at nap or upon wake up from a night's sleep. So slow progress is happening. GL!

My son trained at 20 months and it took a long time for him to initiate. I think partly it was because he was just so young and not super verbal. Eventually, I really had to stand back and give him a chance to tell me. Now he’s 32 months and goes pretty much on his own. It’ll happen!
hopecounts, nsl, preppy, how long do you wait on the potty before letting them go without peeing? DS gets super frustrated and freaks out if he has to stay too long. I don’t want to make the potty something we fight about but if I let him run off he will never learn.

Jumping in here, but we did the naked from the waist down method so I didn’t really make him sit on the potty. We pretty much camped out in the living room (wood floors) and had a potty chair in there with us. The moment I noticed him peeing (on the floor) I’d pick him up and rush to the potty and say “oh! Pee goes in the potty!” He understood by the end of the first day. Day two he wasn’t rushing to the potty by himself yet but he would notice he was peeing- he would say “oh no! I’m peeing!” And I’d rush him over saying the same as before, that pee goes in the potty.

Just a minute or two, not long. Basically just trying to catch a pee to reward peeing in the potty.
Well, he’s in bed for the night. We probably caught about half of his pee today. He’s in a pull-up for overnight. Here’s hoping it starts to click tomorrow.

We waited as long as they weren't losing patience. Books and screens help with this!
For my older son, letting him stand to pee was critical. We put Cheerios in the toilet as targets, and he caught on very quickly.

We are, although we didn’t start until after nap yesterday. DS2 will be 3 in May and has been going pee on the potty consistently if you sit him down on it, since September, at home and preschool. However, he rarely initiates and has to wear pull ups at school, which he often wets. He’s wearing thick training pant undies and wet twice in the first 2 hours yesterday and been dry so far today. I’m setting an alarm for every 30 minutes to try (and I let him pick the song on my phone alarm). Sometimes I’ll set it while he’s on the potty and let him count down to get him to sit still long enough to try. I’ll also adjust the time if he’s wet or not going.

And right after I posted this, I asked him if he needed to go potty and he adamantly said no. The alarm was going off in 3 minutes so I didn’t push it and as soon as we got in the bathroom he said, I pooped. In those 3 minutes! Luckily I caught it soon enough that it wasn’t messy and he did go pee in the potty a lot.
Day 2 and we have been very successful with pee, only one accident in 2 days. Poop she is terrified - either holding it if we sit on the potty or pooping in the undies (which she’s done twice). She’s back at daycare tomorrow so I’m hopeful peer pressure helps with the poop fear? TBD. Overall a successful weekend. We even drove to her swim class 25m each way and stayed dry!
Only one pee accident today so that is great, but I left him alone for a minute in his room and he pooped in the corner, ugh. I remember with DD pooping was the hard part.
DD2 woke me up yelling from her crib that she had to pee and had a dry diaper overnight and peed SO much when we got to the potty. My 3 year old who’s been potty trained for 18m doesn’t even hold it overnight.
I’m going against the 3 day method and sending her to daycare today. But there will be far less kids due to the holiday/vacation week so I’m hoping a first day with less distractions will help.
Today is a holiday here. We went to an indoor playground and then for lunch and he held it the whole time and peed in the potty when we got home. I kept taking him to the potty and waiting with him and encouraging him but, nothing. It’s great he didn’t have an accident for like 3 hours, looks like he can really hold it if he wants to. Maybe I should bring a potty along in the trunk, problem is it’s so cold outside here now I would have to take it indoors for him to use it.
I sent DD to daycare and zero accidents. So excited. She also pooped on the potty right before we left this morning and wasn’t scared so hoping that becomes consistent but we are doing really well - hoping she keeps it up!
preppy, how did you get her to poop on the potty? Or did she just do it on her own? DS has only pooped once and it was yesterday on the floor. I can tell he needs to go now but plan A of Netflix time on the potty alone didn’t work.

Honestly I was downstairs and DH was with her but he said she just did it on her own. The first two days she was terrified and went on the floor once - I have no idea what clicked.
Well he had a few accidents at daycare including one of diarrhea. Poor guy. He seems otherwise totally fine so I’m a bit nervous it’s from hold8ng in his poo to avoid the toilet. DD constipated herself doing that when we trained her. How do you make pooping on the potty a good experience for a toddler?
