Anyone familiar with Newark enough to know if the roads from the Amtrak/Newark Penn station to the Prudential Center are safe enough to walk? Or are they too busy/no sidewalks, etc?
When I look at maps it doesn't look too far and seems walkable, but didn't want to assume since I'll have DS with me. Thanks!
I've only driven there, but the streets are loaded with people when there's a show. Are you seeing something popular? I would imagine there would be a lot of people also going to and from the train to the show. I would take the train with my son if it was a cheaper, more convenient option than driving.
ETA - also tons of cops around and there are definitely sidewalks.

Yes, it's a popular concert, so I guess I'll just follow the masses. ;-)
As long as there are sidewalks, we should be ok then. Thank you!
You'll be fine. It's probably a 10-minute walk. And if it's for an event you can just follow the crowds to get to Prudential.
You'll have to cross McCarter Highway/Rt 21 to get from Penn to Prudential, but there are crosswalks and traffic lights so it's safe. IDK how old your DS is but just hold hands or carry him across the road if he's small. There may be cops directing traffic as well.
If you go directly from the train station through Gateway Plaza toward Prudential, you don't even have to cross McCarter (because it's an indoor walkway that goes right over McCarter), and it'll leave you off right across the street from Prudential. Great option if the weather is bad and also good if you have a kid with you. You'll pass the indoor entrance to the Hilton Hotel on the way through, and cops/NJ Transit people can show you where to go if you get lost (or just look for signs).
Look at these pics for reference. If I remember correctly you'll take an escalator up from the trains area in Penn and then the entrance to Gateway will be by a little bakery stall. Or, again, just ask a NJ Transit cop (they're always patrolling Penn; I have a good friend who was stationed there for a while and did nothing but give out directions for his shift) which way to go to get to the Gateway Center walkway to Prudential: www.yelp.com/biz_photos/gateway-center-newark
