I disagree with this. I said this upthread, but I played a collegiate sport at an Ivy. Do I think my sport helped my application? Yes. 100%. But to insinuate that I didn't "belong" at the school is insulting. Being an athlete was part of what I brought to the university. The hours I spent playing my sport allowed me to bring a different perspective to campus than someone who didn't play a sport. My grades and SAT scores were up there with the average for the incoming class. Was I at the top? Nope, but neither were my non-athlete roommates. They, too, had something that made them a piece of the puzzle for the class.
While there is some truth to the idea that coaches can dictate their recruits to admissions, it's not a carte blanche. Athletes have to be qualified for admissions. We, as a group, did well there academically.
Did you read the article?
I'm not saying every college athlete is a recruited athlete who gets special treatment. I'm saying recruited athletes get vast advantages over students with other talents.
Being a great lacrosse player shouldn't be vastly different for college admissions than being an excellent concert violinist or a ballerina who performs professionally.
We are straying from the topic at hand, and this is why I had an issue with this article in the first place. I personally don't feel it really it relates very much to this scandal although the issue is really interesting and a huge problem in college athletics! : I'm sorry but in American society sports trump classical music, or ballet or performance or..I mean academics lol. It might be sad to realize this, but colleges are businesses and they are must make money. That's just how it is and a football star, a lacrosse player, or at Harvard, a hockey player bring in revenue in multiple areas either through ticket sales or through marketing--Marketing a winning hockey team at Harvard actually BRINGS IN OTHER non athletic students which in turn increases revenue. Looking at college's landing pages, you will see athletics highlighted. It's a selling point. This might not be popular to say but in some respects athletes can't be paid, but they are earning the school money and so yeah, they earned the right to have a higher acceptance rate than Johnny the trumpet player who is a genius but doesn't bring in any money whatesoever. Maybe someday he will be a conductor and he can say he went to Harvard but that's year's down the road.
Today’s article had Olivia Jade shocked and appalled her parents cheated to get her into college as they are good, honest people. Really?
Supposedly both are withdrawing from USC to avoid bullying.
Eh, I’m going to allow the kids to be shocked over this (i suspect that most were in the dark about what their parents were doing). They aren’t going to wake up and just think “oh, my parents are entitled assholes”. I have no problem with the kids dealing with the consequences of their parents actions, but to be defending their parents? I really don’t expect any different at this point.

Didn't she pose for pictures on a rowing machine to fake get into the crew team? I'm pretty sure she knew.

thats true. But she may still not realize to the extent her parents went or how much they paid. In the end i don’t care - they are all dealing with the consequences regardless.

Also, it's not hard to figure out that you hate school, you admit to never even going, yet somehow you got into a great one. She may not have asked any questions, but she knew the answers - her parents got her in.
It's been a long time since law school, but RICO is a federal statute, and don't most of these crimes usually have mandatory minimums? I didn't think you could really plead out on a RICO charge; it's a federal crime and conspiracy is no joke.
You can plead out on anything and there are easy ways to get around mandatories as long as the Da's agree.

I imagine that mom's lawyers and mom herself are directing this move so that Olivia can potentially avoid any jail time herself.
She already said she knew as she faked her sports pictures. She also made statements on Facebook. Though, I can't imagine they will go after them as they were probably under 18 and did so at her parents' directions. They are all fucking assholes.

Right. Like, maybe they can't be held legally responsible, but that doesn't mean the kids aren't potentially totally morally bankrupt.

I don't know how to say this without sounding sympathetic (which is not my intention/feeling), but how else could they be?

Yeah, I think it’s unlikely for morally bankrupt parents to raise teenagers with a strong moral compass. Is it the kids’ fault? Eh, probably a little, but the parents raised them that way.

which is why i have no problem with the kids suffering the consequences of their parents decisions. Despite which kids knew what, the only small chance of them learning ANYTHING from this is to feel the pain from it.
Right? It makes it feel like somewhere deep down inside, our country still has something that resembles a conscience.
I think that’s debatable. If we had a conscience, people wouldn’t be doing stuff like this in the first place. But we’re really good at being outraged about stuff.

What was that phrase from the manafort sentencing...they led an otherwise blameless life.
except for that one time they got caught and showed exactly who they are.
Manafort led a blameless life, except for that one 30 year span where he sold out his country over and over again out of a sense of entitlement and greed.
otherwise, Mossimo, Aunt Becky and Manafort are pillars of society.
Yes, I'm curious what other criminal activity these celebrities have been involved in. Surely, this college entrance scam is not the first. I'm hoping there will be a full financial colonoscopy of these people...I'm guessing that will uncover a lot of interesting information.

Lol, yeah except for that time when her dad lied to his own father about being in college and funneled the tuition payments to his startup.
It will shock none of you that they are a family of Trumpers.
I mean, when I went away to college my dad gave me credit card for "school and emergencies only". So when he got his statement I told him Banana Republic was a book store on campus and I was buying text books and supplies. I got away with it for awhile until my aunt ratted me out.

It would be nice if they withdrew from the school because they acknowledge they didn’t earn the right to be there instead of this, “people are being mean to us” bs. Always the victim.

I told my dad that school lunch went up 50 cents every year when I was in HS 😬 when I n fact it had not changed in price at all.
Now my kid can’t even buy an extra cookie without me getting an alert from the school lunch app 🤣

If colleges are a business that must make money, then they should lose their not-for-profit status and ability to get tax-deductible donations and raise money from the municipal bond market. And we should tax them on all that revenue they’re making on the backs of unpaid student athletes.
You could say they have a fiduciary duty to balance their income statements but this idea that they’re some profit-seeking, money-making enterprise is patently false and a ridiculous argument.
ETA: The programs that make the biggest bucks off college sports are the Big 10 and SEC and maybe a handful of other schools in major conferences. So while I think student athletes are wonderful and add diversity to a college campus, to say they’re underwriting academics at a place like Harvard is baseless. Harvard’s most recent financial statement doesn’t even mention athletics as a line-item in operating revenue.

I agree, but I think there's a wide gulf between knowing your parents for you in, and knowing your parents committed a crime to get you in.

PDQ
I know several people who know one of the parents. They are all devastated - according to everyone, she was the kindest, most generous and thoughtful person. She was the person who always helped even when not asked and who extended herself to others. Her son really had no idea and is devastated - his relationship with his mom is ruined. So in some cases (Aunt Becky and Mossimo with their obnoxious daughter) this is definitely in character. For others, this is obviously in character because it’s them but not the character others knew...

Exactly. And we’re all very focused on this ONE example of Lori Laughlin. We can nit pick this one example to death. But there are 50 people listed in the indictment, right? ALL these kids don’t know. And even Olivia - she may have been told “we have a friend doing us a favor to get you in to USC. You just need to say you’ve rowed before” and she didn’t think anything past that (we’re also talking about 17/18/19 year olds who don’t have a fully formed brain yet and who may still have their parents on a pedestal).
I don’t have a problem with these kids suffering the consequences of their parents actions. The entitlement that exists here - I feel like the kids need to REALLY feel the impact of their parents actions if we have any hope of them REALLY learning from this.
But I still don’t doubt that most of them were largely clueless to what their parents were doing.
