Eta: given the specifics of this thread I regret this post. It feels flippant. My point being that humans have always been terrible at accepting the other in a great variety of forms. It does feel like we ought to be better at this by now and we just aren't.
FWIW, I had the same reaction. Examples of religious persecution go all the way back to the Crusades. I don’t think any religious minority would have the reaction of, “Man, why is this happening all of a sudden?”
Yeah, that's exactly where my head went. I just didn't like how my three word response read as dismissive.

I screwed up. I am just floored that we have guns to efficiently kill so many by one person. I get it. Stupid to equate as “new.” I meant more that we haven’t evolved to care about one another, but instead continue to just fine efficient ways to kill based on our hate.
I deleted like 3 comments ago because it was a quick response comment made out of sadness.
I have always wondered if we would have fought like we have if religion or differing skin colors never existed or if we all would have found something else to fight over.Probably something else but regardless this isn't new behavior.
Sadly I think it’s pretty clear from European territorial wars pre-Reformation we’d just fight over something else.
This is the modernization of something we, humans, have been doing to each other for millennia. It's not new. It is, however, devastating every time it happens.
