My company is doing professional headshots in a couple of weeks. I have never owned a suit or a suit jacket or even a button down shirt in all my years working. I mostly WFH in PJs or yoga pants. Most of the company is business casual. The most professional thing I have is a black button down cardigan plus dress pants. There isn't money in the budget for a suit jacket. The headshots will appear on our intranet profile and will be ours to use as we see fit for LinkedIn, etc.
The cardigan is like this one. Could I dress it up with an accessory like a pearl necklace or something?

I think that would be fine, but if you wanted could you borrow a jacket or nice shirt from someone? I did my company headshot in a bright color (teal) and I think that it looks nice compared to some of the others in beige/grey/black.
If you don't wear suits or blazers and you don't work in an industry that does, there's no reason to wear one for your headshot.
The cardigan is fine, but I don't think you need to limit yourself to that. Any blouse with a modest neckline and covered shoulders is fine, just avoid busy patterns.
I think that's fine! However, I wanted to add that I recently picked up a few blazer type jackets at Marshalls for around $25 each. If you think you might ever want one again (even to wear on a night out with jeans!), that's a great place to buy them.
I won't ever have need for a blazer with my current company & position, so I'd rather not buy one. I'll pair the cardigan with a nice necklace and not worry about it.
I just got mine done last year and had to bring five (!!!) outfits that he could narrow down to three different wardrobe changes. The photographer I used suggested not using cardigans because buttons often are hard to line up nicely on women. I'm sure it would be fine, but if you DO have a nice solid color blouse or shirt you could wear instead, you may like the results better.
I work with a bunch of big architecture firms and many of them have a page labeled “People” with headshots. I pulled up one large nationwide firm to look at as an example and saw women in blazers, cardigans, and blouses or collared shirts. They all looked nice.
I’m sure other professions may have similar pages but that’s the one I’m familiar with.
mbcdefg Thank you! A couple of them gave me some ideas. Our headshots are sort of "old school" against a backdrop. I think I'll be fine w/the cardigan but may look through my nicer tops to see if I have anything.
I wore a blue dress with some white/silver detail on the neckline and a gray sweater. You can only see the gray sweater in the final photo. On a gray background. 🤦🏻♀️

So you look like a floating head? Why the hell didn't the photog say something?

You can distinguish the grays. I think maybe the original shot had some of my dress in it, but in the crop it was lost.
So, that is to say my tip is something with a higher neckline or shorter necklace length.
We recently had headshots done for some staff. I think that the nice, colorful shirts photographed better than the blazers did. Pick a color that compliments your complexion well and wear it with confidence!
