I wish I knew what to expect in a hospital/birthing center over here. If all goes well, you go home within 2-3 hours after birth. But like...do they let you shower? Change? I need to go post in the mom group I’m in and ask for people to share their experience. Everything I know about after is North America focused so I have no clue what to expect. Do they have supplies I can steal like I see everyone suggest?
I have a few friends who did the 4 hour birthing centre thing in Ottawa and they didn’t shower in the birthing centre. They wipe you all up with wet wipes and set you up with mega pads and the mesh undies. I think both my friends wore loose jersey maxi dresses (possibly even maternity ones) home, and then showered, etc at home when they were up for it.
Honestly I was in the hospital for 36 hours after DD was born and showering was the absolute lowest of my concerns. I was still bleeding copiously and nursing was sweaty and messy (a bit) as well. I do think I showered before I went to bed the day I got home, in an attempt to keep the sheets clean. The night sweats were so bad though through the first week that it was pretty hopeless anyhow.
Thought of a question! Since I’ve never been in a hospital after birth before I’m not really sure what to wear. Comfy fold over waistband shorts and a T-shirt with a robe or cardigan should be fine right? The shorts & shirt are black and from ON and have been used as comfy maternity pjs so NBD if blood gets on them.
Last time I wore H's shirts, mesh underwear and a robe. For 6 days. And I left my room a lot. Pants are for chumps, lol. (My robe does cover my ass) The goal is to wear whatever is most comfortable.
I plan on doing the same again, though I did toss in some leggings for shits and giggles.
I was in the hospital for 3 nights. I wore the hospital gown the entire time. When I went for walks I put a robe I brought on top. I didn't shower the whole time. I maybe brushed my teeth once. I was....not up for hygiene those first 72 hours. The minute I got home I handed DS to my mom and went to take a glorious shower, intense scrubbing of my teeth and nap. I have absolutely no regrets.
I don't plan to bring much this time. I'm gross. It will be summer though so maybe a cheap sundress.

This was me, too, except I took a short shower at one point (no hair washing). I think I brought sweatpants, a tshirt, and a hoodie to wear home. I'm a scrub in the best of times (I rarely wear real pants or make-up on weekends), so post partum? Forget it.

What country are you in? I gave birth to my DS1 in the UK (London). My DH’s company paid for a private room for after birth (we stayed 5 days because DS1 had jaundice). If I didn’t have a private room I would have been in a bay with 8 other mothers + 8 baby cots next to them. It’s been 8 years so my memory is failing me but all I remember is I had an American nurse who shove a bunch of pads and mesh underwear into my bag as I got moved to my private room from the birthing room. She told me they didn’t give any extras out.
I gave birth to my second in the US - stuff like peri bottle, diapers, sits bath, pads etc that they readily supplied and let me take home was not the case in the UK. In the UK I was expected to bring all that stuff including receiving blanket for DS1.
Edit: all the well checks for baby for the first few weeks (and my postpartum checks) was a midwife coming to our apartment which was nice and we didn’t have to venture out for drs appointments. Edit 2: there was a shower in the birthing room that I used. Shower also in my private room, not sure how it worked if I didn’t have a private room.
Edit 3: getting a private room was on a first come basis so if you might need to stay get your name on the list the moment you walk in if that’s the case for you. You can always opt out of the private room if you choose not to do use it or get discharged from the birthing room.
namasteak I wore the hospital gown and mesh underwear and didn’t dress til we left. I did shower etc and I think they just gave me a new gown every day. We were there for three nights (DS2 had a fractured collarbone so they kept us a bit longer). I wore nursing tank and loose lightweight sweat pants home. He was a summer baby. The gown had panels on the side for easy nursing.

When I had Ds2 at a birth center I went home about 3 hours after delivery. I did shower and have a snack but I didn’t not have supplies to steal.

gastro, I’m in the Netherlands. They do private rooms only I believe here.
namasteak, this post actually prompted me to post in my mom group and I got tons of information. They said the hospital or birthing center has everything to give you, which is nice to know. I’m also doing the tour at both hospitals and the birthing center as I can decide when I go into labour where I want to go and they said I’ll find out everything.

I meant that they provided everything I needed while there but there wasn’t extra to take home.
I have been spending a few hours every other day making freezer meals and now that I have 8 more to make (2 recipes) i reaaallly don’t want to. But I have the ingredients and don’t want to waste them so onwards!
You’re welcome future Nama who is sick of takeout out but doesn’t want to cook.

Last time I wore a comfy fold over waist skirt (black in case of blood), which gave better access than shorts when they woke me up at 6am to check my stitches (not that I'm bitter). I would do that again. Then nursing tank and robe for if cold.
I did a lot of black in case of blood too. I think I had loose fitting shorts and pants, plus a few nursing tanks and a short robe.
Count me in as one of the people that was in a gown and/or practically naked the entire time I was in the hospital. Even with visitors. I just had a pretty big medical event, they can deal with the fact that I'm not put together.
My cousin? Hair done, makeup on, fully dressed for visitors. I was AMAZED.
Honestly though I do not think I pulled any clothes out of my bag until the day we went to leave, when I put on a loose maxi dress and sandals.

I didn’t give birth in a birthing center (no such thing in Sweden) and I didn’t go home within a few hours either but I stayed in the delivery room for something like 2-3 hours before being moved to the post partum unit and my midwife strongly encouraged me to shower while I was still in the delivery room.
And there wasn’t really any supplies for me to steal, they did provide what was needed during the stay but there wasn’t much, they filled up several times but not much each time so nothing extra to bring home. This time I will make sure to bring my own wipes since they had none at all. They suggested we use the paper towel but that wasn’t great for cleaning up sticky meconium. So wipes will definitely be on the list to pack this time.
I wore this gown for delivery. I liked that it had ties all down the front so the nurses could access my belly as needed without having to shift or remove clothing. And it provided a lot more coverage than a hospital gown. It may seem like an unnecessary expense but it was 100% worth it for me because I wouldn't have been comfortable at all in a hospital gown.
I was only kept overnight and I did a shower the next day, so I had a regular nightgown to change into for that next day, and then I had a maxi dress and sweater to change into for going home.

I got my NIPT results! They drew the sample last Wednesday morning and she called me with the results today. I was pleasantly surprised at how quick it was.
We did not test our embryos prior to transfer, and I'm 40, so I held my breath a bit but thankfully we are low risk and things looked great. We also found out we're having a boy
DH is thrilled, of course, and we're going to announce tonight. To say that people will be shocked is an understatement... I'm sorta excited to see the reactions (and hope no one is an asshole!).

I should also mention the gown I linked above also comes in plus size, just in case you're concerned about a one size fits all not covering enough. I have large breasts so I went with the plus size and it was perfect.

@yankees21 we were Team Green for DD. I liked it because we got lots of gender neutral and super cute little baby stuff. It was also fun announcing she was a girl after birth and telling everyone her name.
This time around we found out it’s a boy. I would have done the team green thing again except that we are moving when I am 30 weeks and I have to set up two kids bedrooms at the new house. I really felt as though I needed to know if I could purge DDs clothes (she’s into 4T now so there’s a lot of it to go) before the move as well.
Team Green is fun and lots of my friends have done it as well. I wish you luck in the name game though!
When I had DS, I laid around the day of my Csection andthe day after but got up and showered at the hospital on day 3 before I came home. I’ll probably do the same this time. It felt good to get a shower and put some makeup on after being laid up for two days. I think I mainly just had the hospital gown on while I was there since it had the access to my stomach for the nurses. I did not open the bag I brought. LOL

Cautiously stepping over here. I've had recurrent pregnancy losses in the last year and a half. But I'm trying to be hopeful and positive.
1. How far along are you this week? 7w2d
2. Pregnancy-related AW/vents/randoms for this week? Second farthest I've made it in this round of TTC #3 🤞
3. Questions for the group? I'm seriously out of breath this time around. I don't remember it so much with the last few pregnancies. And can't remember back to my two successful pregnancies. They were awhile ago. Is this normal?
4. Anything tech-related you are planning on getting/using for baby? Special apps? Monitors? So far, no idea. I think I have a lot to catch up on. Things have changed in the last 5 years.
I just got more sore as the day went on and it even an epsom salt bath is helping I haven’t found a Webster chiro that isn’t a weirdo or too far so hopefully I can get in for a massage this week.
2. Pregnancy-related AW/vents/randoms for this week? My local Rhea Lana's consignment sale is this Saturday and since the next one isn't until October, we are going to go. I'm mostly hoping they have some decent maternity clothes but we may also pick up some baby gear. Probably not a great idea to buy a bunch before any showers take place but I know we won't get everything. Plus I'm pretty picky
Also - fingers crossed my NIPT results come back this week and we can go ahead and announce! I'd also love to know gender before we buy much.
3. Questions for the group? Anyone have a fibroid? I used IVF (so lots of ultrasounds/tests) and had polyps removed before my first round but had no fibroids. At my NT scan, she said I have a 5.2 cm fibroid now. OB said nothing of it but ultrasound tech said I'll probably feel it as I grow. Of course googling led me down a dark path... I'm hoping since the OB didn't mention it, that it's at a position that won't cause any problems? Anyone have complications due to one?
4. Anything tech-related you are planning on getting/using for baby? Special apps? Monitors? Etc? I was hoping to pass the monitor decision off on DH He basically controls our entire house on his smartphone so I figure that's his territory...
we did IUI and during the prep ultrasounds they told me i had a fibroid too. never got a size measurement on it, but they told me it was fine to continue with treatment (obviously, since i'm here on got pregnant now) and that it's fine to have one when pregnant. i didn't do any research after that and no one has mentioned it in any of my appointments since.
Yankees21 - we were team green for kid#1. it was nice, i loved having DH tell me what the baby was in the moment. We got a bunch of gender neutral stuff and decorated the nursery neutral as well. we will just stick kid#2 in there, boy or girl (we will find out this time). i was able to loan out a good number of newborn and 3 month clothes to my sister when she had her baby girl a few months ago and will be able to at least re-use those again, if not everything else as well. also all our gear is neutral, not color/gender specific which is handy as well.
landmermaid - i've definitely been more out of breath this time too. i can't remember it from last time either, but i figured it's because i'm five years older and a few pounds heavier than last time. i have read it's a very common symptom though, so that reassured me.
