I’m trying to hit the ground running since I only have today in my office. I’m hitting it more at a fast run/slow jog. But hey, it’s forward progress, right?
I’m getting very freaked out about my surgery tomorrow. And by the recovery period since everyone is very passé about it. Like “oh, just rest your eye for a week and don’t do anything too strenuous and watch for signs your retina isn’t detaching. But other than that it’s easy peasy lemon squeezy.”
We had a great weekend. DD's volleyball team beat our biggest rivals by 1 in the 3rd game. I admit I was a little too giddy about it. Great group of girls, but their coach is the worst. Tries to make calls on our team and complains to the ref. Went to the derby party and thought I won big, but my horse was Maximume Security. Whomp Whomp. I just picked him because I like the name.
Yesterday was beautiful. Got my run in, grilled some burgers, DH smoked some ribs so we have food for today also.
Today should start a chill week at work. I have a meeting with a former state Senator tomorrow that is now working the health field, so I need to be very prepared for that, but the rest of the week I am grant writing. I just need to get the motivation to start.
It will not be a chill week at home. DS has confirmation practice Wednesday night. Thursday is confirmation. I need to be home by 4 to do her hair and feed her and be at the church by 5:30. DS has his big club banquet Thursday night. He finds out if he made officer. And no one can be there. All of us and grandparents need to go to the Confirmation. That sucks.
So on the subject of DS's club. He had interviews for the officer position last week. He had to be in full dress. Black shoes, pants, dress jacket, white shirt. I asked him several times, do you have everything. I get a huff, YEEEESSS.... eye roll. Like, why would I even ask.
So I pick him up afterschool and ask how did it go. He said, well you won't believe it. Try me. He went to put on his clothes for the interview and he had packed a white lab coat instead of a white shirt. I brought it home for DD from work for career day. How he got hold of it, I have no idea. So he waits for his buddy to come out and tracks him down to borrow the shirt the kid is wearing. Now DS is on an HGH regime as I have discussed, so he may be pushing 5ft 4 by now. The kids shirt that he borrowed is 6ft 3. So I guess he just stuffed the knee length shirt in his pants and went on. Who knows how the interview went.
rere- Can I just say though, kudos for you for not snow-plow parenting? He handled his screw up in a way that didn’t involve him expecting to be saved. So good for you, Mom!
It was a pretty good weekend. Beautiful spring weather, finally! We putzed around the house Saturday morning and then I took the kids to a stage version of James and the Giant Peach. Then we had pizza and walked around our downtown and had ice cream. Sunday was church and then I did some yard work after lunch. I snuck in a semi-nap between yard work and taking DS to practice for his travel baseball team. While he was there, DD and I went to the grocery store.
DH gets home from his guys weekend early tomorrow morning (the race was canceled yesterday due to rain and rescheduled to today), and then we are heading to the state capitol (a little over an hour away) for a field trip for DS. I need to get to bed early tonight so I'm well rested for tomorrow. (Plus I don't sleep well when DH is gone, and now our dog gets up once a night to go potty (due to old age), so I'm tired.)
Wednesday DD has a field trip, so DH and I took off the day to go on her field trip too. Her field trip has a lot of outdoor time, and the forecast is for rain most of the day, so I'm not sure if it will be changed to more indoor activities or rescheduled due to weather.
The daycare crud that's going around is finally catching up to me. I'm congested and can't hear out of my right ear. Preview of my golden years, I guess?

I signed the lease to a rental house on Saturday and started moving in this weekend. My parents helped me Saturday and a couple of coworker friends helped me with the big furniture yesterday. I'm tired and sore, but at work for part of today. I have to go into city hall to set up the utilities and internet could take a while since it's a new construction. The house is beautiful and the landlord husband and wife pair are so nice. They live right next door in a mansion. I'm taking tomorrow off to meet with a lawyer. I have so much junk to either move or get rid of at my house before the realtor pictures on Friday.
This probably needs its own thread but I'm just dumping it here. Replied to principle last Thursday regarding DD not getting into TAG but needing to address her boredom and not wanting to go to school. I got a response back Sunday afternoon suggesting we have a meeting with Mrs. M (DD teacher) the week of the 20th (2 weeks away). I replied back stating I already had a meeting with Mrs. M last month and with it being so late in the school year we need to get DD excited about 3rd grade and figure out how to not start next year with the same problem. I gave my schedule for that week which already has 2 days of afterschool volunteering going on and add that if we need to include DD in the meeting she is only free on Wed & Fri after school. I feel like I'm getting blown off. Now I bet if DD was throwing massive tantrums daily and causing chaos I would be getting more attention. I did look into trying to get her a 504 and she needs a medical condition/diagnosis to qualify.
Weekend went really well. I'm sore from my yard work at my sister's house but it felt really good to use power tools again. I also learned that my sister doesn't get to use them at all as I felt like I was going to be calling 911 when she tried it out. I left her to use the hand saw and pole saw while I used the tiger saw DD tried rock climbing Sunday at the 1pass party and wow the pictures show some major shoulder/arm muscles. DH came home in a great mood from paintball weekend
186momx , yup you are being blown off. But it sounds like she doesn't qualify for an IEP or a 504. A good teacher would do differentiate learning though. Is there anything like that in 3rd grade, higher level math classes or course work? Math is the big issue, correct?
When teachers teach to the middle which is often what they do because of a lack of time to prepare for 3 levels every class period/ subject then the bright kids and lower level kids often suffer. I would continue to give her advice and tips at home on how to deal with the boredom, maybe she can read a book after her math work is done type thing.
I am not sure I would do a ton of above level stuff because then that might lead to more boredom. Maybe go deeper into the current content rather than broader up to advanced. She also needs to learn that she might not like every topic but how to cope with that. Since math builds on itself she still needs to stay with it. I think she was complaining about addition and subtraction... Has the teacher done any pure math adjacent type work? Statistics, measurement, etc? Anything that is not addition/ subtraction type stuff all year? If not, it sounds like it is maybe a curriculum issue as well. DS is in 2nd grade also and hasn't really started too much with multiplication and division. They use Eureka math, which was a tough adjustment at first, but I think the kids and teachers have adjusted now, so it is going OK. What curriculum do they use there?
In a case of the Mondays, I have no power in my office. Or limited power in my office. The lights work, but nothing that plugs into outlets does.. And it's only affecting a whopping two of us, which is really, really annoying.
186momx - I agree - they are blowing you off. It’s really frustrating. I was met with the same attitude at the public school last year when DD1 was being bullied. I pushed it all the way up the chain and was blown off repeatedly.
I solved the problem by leaving the school system. I don’t know if that’s an option for you. DD1 went through private neuropsych testing, which included academic and IQ testing. Maybe if you’re armed with that info, you could push to get her into a school that could accommodate her? I know that in my state, if one school can’t accommodate whatever the issue is, the system is required to find an alternative solution - a different public school within or outside the district, or even a private school. But I don’t know if your DD would qualify.
I’m so jaded by out public school experience that I might be giving bad advice, but keep pushing, and start to look for alternatives, if they are an option for you. Good luck!!
The boys and I had a good weekend. DD was so tired from camping with DH that she was a total zombie when she got home and was asleep by 6:30 pm last night, and DH was snoring by 9.
I’m known for cutting flights super close but today’s was a little too close for comfort. Of course the plane was supposed to leave 10 minutes ago and we’re still sitting at the gate. The gate agent insisted on checking my carry on because she said there was no available space, but I think that was just my punishment for showing up as they were announcing my name in the terminal.
Tomorrow is DH’s birthday. Fingers crossed my flight back tomorrow is on time and we can grab a drink before heading home to have cupcakes and open presents with the kids.
mommyatty I also felt like people were super nonchalant about the recovery after my foot surgery, when it was a major deal for me. The podiatrist didn’t even tell me I couldn’t drive for a month until I asked. That is kind of important, life-changing info! Good luck with your surgery!

It's my first day back after disney world and I walked into....well...my new work life. My old boss is now saying he wants to take furniture out of my office. Which he can, since he bought all of it.
He also wants to go to the post office to do a change of address for his office. Which, realistically, means that all the fucking company mail that has his name on it b/c he's the current GC is going to go to him at some black hole of an office some place and he'll continue to get the 2 pieces of personal mail per year that he normally gets.
waverly, it has been math all year and she just started complaining about small group reading but then her entire group is complaining that the reading is too easy. Her teacher is all about using the computer to teach math and they use I-Ready but DD sucks at computers and gaming so she really struggles being patient with the math program. She knows the answer and just wants to put it in not do 10 steps to put the final answer in and then she clicks the wrong button and has to start over. She can use it at home and rants at it the whole time she does it. They have done a 2 week stint on measurement but then it was still just adding to 10. DD has been getting extra's from one of the 3rd grade teachers all year so I have hopes that next year will go smoother as the teacher already knows she has gotten some of this. I was talking with last year's teacher last week and she can't understand why Mrs. M doesn't let DD do independent study during math or small groups. She said she has a little girl who is so far ahead in reading that she is doing independent study during small group reading and the girl picked spiders so is reading everything under the sun about spiders. So if DD's teacher put in some extra time DD could be doing differentiated learning but she either can't or won't do that.
mae0111, we can't afford the private schools in the area and then I think DD would be behind as a couple friends have their kids in and they are way farther ahead in 1st than DD is now in 2nd. We have open enrollment in February/March so next year I could just pick another school for her to attend no questions ask for 4th grade. Open enrollment/transfer is over so I'm stuck for 3rd unless we move which would be stupid.
mustardseed2007, They can set up a forward for just personal stuff and have anything with the company name remain I think. We just did something similar with our office move. Only forwarded items with company name, any personal stuff won't get forwarded.
My amazing presentation from yesterday just got taken to a whole new level today. My CEO basically told me they want to know if I had a blank check, what would I do and what would those budgets be. So, now I have 48 hours to come up with everything ever that I want to do. Yikes! Super fun, but also not a 48 hour project!

twinmomma, you're right. Just, sometimes stuff literally is sent with his name. The change of address is not necessary, he's just being a twit because he's mad. Honestly I need to keep reminding myself that being a twit is to be expected because he's not being treated so well. Everyone has their reasons.

Is the teacher willing to explore other computer programs for math? Or are there settings that can be adjusted? DS hated math because they used Imagine Math and it was the same skills over and over again, but his teacher let him switch to a different program (IStation, Study Island?) and unlocked it so that he could move to the next concept once he demonstrated mastery. He still has to work on the same boring stuff the class is doing for part of the time, but this lets him work on more advance concepts during his free time.
gaudi, DD has pointed the problem out to her teacher. I've expressed concerns about it not moving her forward and her frustrations with the program. It is new the school/district and her teacher admitted not knowing how to advance DD without her going through the motions. I will be sure to ask when we meet if they use it in 3rd and if there is anyway to adjust her level. Her teacher likes it for the math games. I know the 3rd grade teachers have their own paper set of math games because we have them and already play them. Multiplication war with playing cards is a lot of fun.
186momx - could you see if they will make an exception to the transfer deadline since your school took its sweet-a$$ time with the TAG testing and results? I think if you make enough of a stink, you’ll be able to send your DD elsewhere sooner.
I mean, you missing the deadline is easily explained. You relied on the current school to do their jobs in a timely manner and to do right by your DD. The fell down on both accounts.

I'm a week into this crappy cold. Ugh.
Survived DS's birthday and now diving into my contributions to Bike to School Day on Wednesday, which involved procuring a case of bananas, and transporting things to the school Wednesday morning for our event table. Also trying to regain my job search momentum, which went by the wayside while I was all stressed about DS's party.
Had an echocardiogram today. The tech said there is nothing to worry about and I will have no issues with daily activities and he can’t say much. He then said I should not work out until I see the doctor. That I’m fine but with the pressure issue I came in for to wait to see the doctor. He asked in the middle if my low blood pressure bothers me and later if I get dizzy when I stand up.
I asked him if it’s an abnormality he said yes. I asked if it was minor he said yes.
I don’t see the doctor until the 16th. I have been fine working out and my doctor said I could handle workouts after my stress test.
My FIL has been in and out (but mostly in) of the hospital the past couple weeks. Intestinal infection. It’s all very day by day. Everyone else lives about 2hrs away by car, and he’s in the hospital there, so his extended family is all on the spot. This has made communication with DH terrible. They forget to tell him things. They tell him not to visit then ask why he’s not calling his father. (Cause you told us he was delirious and can’t communicate.) Hospital delirium is exacerbating some signs of dementia that FIL was already showing. Very sudden verbal lashing out with hateful things to say to whoever is there.
So DH called yesterday and talked to his dad and it went as expected: good for a couple minutes, then erratic insults until DH’s stepmom took the phone away. We know it’s uncontrollable, but given DH’s fragile mental health, he can’t be a target of this. So no visiting, which will bring its own heat from the rest of the family. I feel so bad for him.

Google delivered nothing useful. Uugghhhhh.
I have blood pressure in the lower side. I wondered if taking the NSAIDS thinned my blood slightly kind of like the aspirin a day idea for heart conditions. Now that I can’t take them I wonder if it will go up. Any medications causing this?
Strangely I cannot drink alcohol when it is very hot especially when standing up. I guess heat lowers blood pressure and alcohol does too ( more like constructs blood vessels), so the combination causes my vision to go white. Passing out would be the next step but if I sit down and drink water I can avoid it, so I haven’t passed out yet.
waverly - that is wild about alcohol and heat! I don’t take anything that would affect pressure, and I hope that they have some kind of answer because it’s just so odd the way it drops and raises. Annoying more than anything, really.
186momx - there’s a point at which you have to consider your child as part of a larger group and a wider system - public school is unlikely to meet her where she is on any consistent basis. DD’s second grade year she had 4-5 subs and no teacher and was bored out of her mind. She’s fine. The GT threshold here is over 99% because the district is so saturated with these kids; that means until 4th she didn’t get services and she would have in any neighboring district based on scores. She’s fine.
I’d focus on her perspective and attitude, as you don’t want to raise the kid who as an adult is given a spreadsheet to reconcile and flips because it’s below her level (I managed one of those people but not for very long because I managed them out, I didn’t need a side of commentary with every assignment). For instance, she needs to be patient and click carefully in the math game (Prodigy is buggy and DS shares the frustration but my message has been that it’s on him and not to blame the game). Take this as an opportunity to work on life skills, as they will be way more important than reading above grade level.
Also FWIW DD’s first grade teacher, when i was freaking out about second, said at this age reading below level builds fluency and I agree now that her Lexile is 12th grade. So there’s an advantage....
2chatter, this was me last night. She was complaining about homework and I was like tough you are going to do it and if it is that easy then it shouldn't take you very long to do. We all have to go and do things we don't like or want to but they still have to be done. I then gave her an example which she just looked at me gaping mouth. Sat down and did her homework plus and extra work page and didn't give me a hassle this morning about going to school. What I find hard to deal with is when she says "mommy I just want to learn something new each day".
DD is looking extremely forward to tomorrow's no school day due to teacher walkout. Teachers are protesting tomorrow by walking out to try and get more funding. Thing is over the years different taxes all have been earmarked for schools but it doesn't seem like the schools get the money. The teachers want to add more taxes on to business to help pay for better schools.
186momx - my kids will either be productive and resilient or messed up, but we won’t know until they start therapy as adults....I have largely put the complaints on them. Bored at school? What would you prefer to read - take that with you. Print worksheets and put them in your backpack. I set challenges with them on their levels in the games - finish your test and get ahead of everyone else in your grade and yes I know Henry’s tutor makes him do an hour a day after school - put up or shut up. I’m glad that it was a good morning!
Does everyone wonder what will come out in therapy when their kids are grown? Just me?
I’m home and my eyeball is still in my head, so all is well. My vision is super-cloudy, and the nurse was amazed at the size of the cataract they sucked out of there. But it was just a cataract. The theory is that somehow I had trauma to my eye that I just didn’t think was so bad but my eye begged to differ. And considering how many times my kids bop me in the head or the eye when we are playing, it’s a solid theory.
