You know those texts you get from a candidate/candidate's representative? Do they actually come from real people? Do real people read your response?
Today I got a text from Jack with Bennet's campaign asking for a "contribution." I said no, and that I'd rather he stay in the Senate. Not a big surprise that I didn't hear back but I then wondered if anyone actually reads what people say on those things.
I don’t know if this is an exception but Bernie’s people usually engage when I respond to them.

When I texted for Beto for Senate, I always responded. We had an entire guidebook of how to engage.

I typically engaged, but I didn’t have anyone I could actually report this to that it would make a difference.
CallingAllAngels, centralsquare, mskitkat- Interesting! I've responded to other candidates but never hear back so I was beginning to think that the texts were autogenerated.

There's a person (sometimes a different one will see responses than sent the texts) and they'll mark off your response (sometimes on a scale of 1-5 of likely support) for the campaign's database. Usually we're told not to engage with a negative response or given a canned response "I understand. Remember to vote in November!"
I did get someone to briefly engage with me on Medicare for All. I said I was for universal healthcare, but I wasn't sure Medicare was a good model for a single payer system. I brought up that reproductive coverage was going to be a fight - and anything other than full coverage would be a loss for Oregonians. She insisted that reproductive care, including birth control and abortion, would be covered and referred me to their website. So I went there and did a search for abortion which got precisely zero hits. When I pointed that out she stopped responding.
I mean, I get it. I do texting and canvassing for Planned Parenthood and that's not an issue that you're going to change a lot of minds on. Our job isn't to engage, it's to encourage our supporters. It just feels like there could be a lot more dialogue in this country than yes/no, 1-5.

Huh, I always assumed that political texts were automated. For some reason I got TONS of texts during the 2018 election urging me to vote republican. I always responded, "There is no way in hell I would ever vote republican," and I never got any responses.

You didn’t get a response because you made your preference clear. Campaign volunteers, even the GOP ones, by and large, are not supposed to behave like Twitter trolls. It’s a waste of resources to have them argue with people who have firmly made up their minds. Time is better spent reaching the true undecideds, the registered votes in your political party who have an irregular history of voting, or just reminding people who are with you that they have to go to the polls.
I was thrillled when I saw the headline but I’m honestly underwhelmed.
Hillary and Gillibrand support the Hyde repeal. I can’t remember there not being a Dem who supports repealing the gag rule.
The federal legislation is absolutely right and I’m thrilled she’s put forth something.
That said, rolling out a nice but still pipe dream piece of legislation that covers some basics in a Medium post, sandwiched between eight million other policy proposals is not a response that is tailored to the seriousness of the problem. That we find it great is a reflection of how completely and utterly shittastic the rest of the party is on this issue.
The entire party’s approach needs to be overhauled. This is the one area where TALK is action. They need to really talk to people to cut through the bullshit. I want a press conference. Bring in some doctors. Shame the media for buying into the GOP’s loaded phrasing like heartbeat bill and partial birth abortion. Correct them every chance you get and demand every other democrat do better. Devote major time at rallies to addressing this. Call on Democrats to do a debate solely on women’s health issues. Etc etc.
I’m sure there are a million other things democrats can be doing.
While I generally think Trump voters are lost causes and shouldn’t be engaged with, I think the Democrats failure to adequately speak about abortion rights has resulted in far too many pro-choice people willing to sideline the issue and a collective societal failure to appreciate exactly what harm is being caused by these laws.
So yay for going a little bit further than others but this just isn’t enough. Poverty stricken 12 year old rape victims are going to go to prison for 99 years. Black and Latina women who miscarry will be terrorized by the police. Pregnant women are literally the property of the state of Georgia.
I want to see how these candidates will tackle the propaganda TODAY not what pipe dreams they will pass if they ever get a Congress controlled by people with spines.
Her proposal seems at least equally as far reaching, if not more so, than Warren’s and it came out before Warren’s. I don’t understand why Vox didn’t cover her yesterday and just dismissively mentioned she had proposed something but made Warren’s out to be more comprehensive.
This is not a knock on Warren but a frustration with coverage of women candidates and abortion. Gillibrand seems to be the Democrat most motivated by women’s issues and it pisses me off that she’s ignored.
Warren and Gillibrand coming out like they did on abortion literally brought tears to my eyes. Bring it, Liz. And bring it, Kirsten. I'm so here for candidates treating the right to abortion with the consideration, care, and respect it deserves. Not some shameful also-ran to general "rights stuff."
Eta: and, yes, they could do more. But I can't recall a time in a recent election when people have been more straightforward. I'm here for it. Push it.

You cannot discuss economic issues without addressing reproductive healthcare. The ability to control our own reproduction is central to the economic condition of women.

Agreed?
Yeah, I was emphatically agreeing. Sorry if I seemed accustomed.

I so SO thankful they both immediate responded. And none of the “safe legal and rare” bullshit. I want it as easy to get as a mole removal. Because it’s fucking health care, dammit.

ESF, I have a friend who worked in the Clinton White house and in several elections since. He said a few months ago that Gillibrand won’t get anywhere bc she and the Clintons have no love lost between them, and that she won’t be able to raise money as a result. I had hoped he was wrong.

I'm a little hair trigger on about everything right now, so I cautiously double-checked. Now that I have confirmed the right read on our exchange: FUCK YEAH

Interesting and definitely plausible. If true, very unfortunate.

To be clear, I am thankful to see something too.
I’m just frustrated because I want more. We NEED more. Our leadership can do better than this.
