I'm sure this has been covered in all of the washcloth discussions, but I was thinking about it this morning (in the shower, of course). The house I grew up in had two bathrooms, but "mine" did not have a shower. I took a bath every night until I moved away to college and never really thought about it. Although I know I showered at camp and in bath houses when we went camping, no one ever told me what to do or how to do it.
This is a conversation DH and I have had before, because he showers wrong, lol. He washes his hair at the end, after he has washed his whole body. This does not make sense to me at all, and he does not know why he does things in that order, he just always has. Do you remember being taught how to shower, and do you still mostly do it the way you were taught?
Nope. I was an older teen before I had my first shower. We had only a tub growing up, my grandparents only used their tub so no shower when I visited them, and we didn't shower at school for gym.
Kind of -because the way my mom used to bathe us felt like torture so I couldn't wait to take showers on my own. But I had a little sister who she still had to give a bath too, so I was roped in longer then necessary. I was probably 10 when I started showering on my own.
And by torture I mean that we had a giant black rock in the bath that my mom would use to scrub our knees, ankles, and elbows. And then occasionally, she would "twist" our skin on our arms and legs so that all the dead skin would kind of peel off. I was probably the most exfoliated kid in elementary school.
No. I remember being 4 in the shower by myself and using bar soap on my head, it ran in my eyes and I screamed bloody murder until she came to help me. So nobody taught me obviously 🤣
Nope, no clue when I started showering or bathing on my own.
@@@ My son is 8 and we're still checking in and talking him through it a bit (mostly DH, but I do it if DH isn't around), though he does most of the steps himself. I'm pretty sure I was showing completely independently earlier. One more thing we seem to do/need to do as parents now, where our parents had already passed on the job.
I don't remember being specifically taught how to shower.
I remember one day being repeatedly told my armpits smelled bad during a "sniff check" so obviously I was lying about washing myself, even though I'd showered three or four times by that point and was crying in the shower scrubbing myself and wondering WTF was wrong with me if I still smelled even after multiple showers. To this day I still pile on the deodorant because of that. /debbie downer
My parents never reviewed showering with me and I took baths alone from a pretty young age so it wasn't like they were very involved after 5 or so.
I work with my kids more but honestly (the books for girls especially are very good on this topic) but I'm not overly involved in what my 7 and 9 year olds do exactly when they shower. If they're obviously dirty, smelly or sticky from not rising I send them back to reshower but I'm not checking their mechanics during most showers.
My parents showered but us kids took a bath every night. I didn't shower until junior high in PE. When I was a young adult I still took a bath until I figured out I really didn't want to lie in my own skin cells--after that I showered and haven't looked back. My kids were raised to shower.

karinothingmcsangel2 So, I feel like washing my hair and using conditioner leaves conditioner on my body, which I then wash off with soap. Not really wrong, of course - it just literally never occurred to me.
I have longer hair, so I wash it first and then put it up in a clip out of the way, and have done it this way since I was in college. I think it is more of one of those things that if you have always done it one way you don't think about other ways?
Maybe? I know I took showers with my mom at first and I do actually remember her showing me how to gently wash between your legs. Odd that that’s the only specific memory that stuck, lol. I think I perfected my own routine later by trial and error. Like I wash my body last because I would break out on the back of my neck/upper back from conditioner if I did that last. Now I want to do a shower routine thread, lol. It would be like the birthday twin thread!
Mine is: Shampoo Conditioner If shaving - shave while conditioner is sitting Wash body Wash face
I also don't remember being taught how to shower. shampoo wash body conditioner shave legs rinse - I don't mind if my spendy conditioner also moisturizes my body (mostly back).
No, I just washed as I washed in the bathtub. And I also do my hair last so my hair is sufficiently saturated from the water to shampoo it. I’ve never had a problem with water rinsing conditioner from my body.
ETA: My evolution of washing went as follows: Parents bathing me in tub Bathing myself in tub (stand up to soap up, dunk to rinse) Bathing self in shower

Shampoo and rinse (2x a week) Condition (2-3x a week) Wash with soap & rinse Shave legs & other parts Rinse conditioner (also don't mind body having moisturising conditioner on it)
And yes, I did learn how to do this stuff from my mom as we had a shower and bath.
No, but I remember hating baths because sitting in dirty water was (and still is) gross. In junior high we only had a bathtub and I would stand in it and wash. And for anecdotal sake: Shampoo Conditioner Wash On Saturdays, I shave after washing
I honestly don't remember bathing myself, so I guess I went from being bathed by parents/grandparents to taking a shower. I was taking a nighttime shower each day by the time I was in 6th grade, so 11, for sure. Then I switched to morning showers when I was in 7th grade and never looked back. I used to wash my hair every day, though, until well into my 20s. Now it's every 3-4 days and I just clip it up on the days I don't wash it and don't stick my head under.
I know I had to learn how to shower before going to sleep away camp for the first time, which was around 8 or 9. I think I learned to shower before that. But I honestly have no specific recollection of it.
I don't remember being taught, beyond my mom telling me to tip my head backwards under the showerhead to keep shampoo from running into my eyes.
My routine: Shampoo Conditioner & put hair up with a clip Wash body Shave underarms (Shave legs if I'm doing that) Brush teeth while washing conditioner out of my hair and off my back Wash face
I also wash my hair at the end? Why is that wrong?
What do you do while you let the conditioner soak into your hair?
Oh I shave my legs at the very end while the conditioner soaks in. I can’t use shaving foam (allergies) so I use a moisturizing soap first and let that soak in before I shave so it goes well.

I don't remember learning to shower.
I did used to wash my hair last until my hairdresser once commented that my hair was super dry and I should leave conditioner in longer. Since then I have washed my hair first, then conditioned and left it in my hair until the end of the shower, when I rinse it all at once. This revelation occurred sometime when I was in college.
ETA: My mom had no idea how to take care of my hair. Her hair was fine and thin and naturally straight, and mine is thick and kind of course and wavy. She would constantly complain about how much shampoo and conditioner I was using, and how I should be using a dime size amount. No wonder I didn't learn how to wash it properly!

I don't specifically remember being taught. I do remember my mom brushing my hair one night (I think I was 7 or 8), and telling me that conditioner doesn't rinse out by just standing under running water.
I wasn’t taught most things related to being an adult. I taught myself how to cook, clean, take care of my physical self, and to take care of my surroundings.
Ditto this word for word. I was in some pretty embarrassing situations as a child because i wasn't really taught this stuff. I make it a point to tell my kids how to take care of their needs and make sure that they have everything that they need to do it.
@ I don't specifically remember being taught, but I'm guessing my mom did what I do with my boys now. My 3yo will take showers occasionally where he stands in the water and I wash his hair and body for him. He rinses and then gets out. My 5yo used to do the same, but now he washes himself in the shower and does it the same way that I used to do for him.
My routine:
Shampoo & rinse Conditioner - leave in Wash body & rinse Wash face & rinse Shave underarms (and legs if doing that) & rinse In-shower body lotion & rinse Rinse conditioner
No. I remember being 4 in the shower by myself and using bar soap on my head, it ran in my eyes and I screamed bloody murder until she came to help me. So nobody taught me obviously 🤣
My dad has washed his hair with plain Dial bar soap for his entire life. It's so bizarre to me! I do not do that so I guess he clearly didn't teach me to shower? 😂
To address everything else in here, I don't remember when I started showering or if I was taught, and I wash my hair, then condition, then wash my body/shave while the conditioner sits, then rinse everything, then wash my face.
