I dont know what to do for Alabama other than what's already recommended. It looks like Michigan (my state) might be gearing up for a fight so I'm going to be focusing on that fight because I'm actually here.
I feel so frustrated, like the walls are closing in and nobody can stop it. I'm hoping whoever is elected for president will have some kind of solution to unstack the SC before these cases can make their way up and that the vote turns our and takes back these state legislatures.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
I've been trying for days to find a silver lining- ANY silver lining. Otherwise, I'll lose it.
The only one I can think of is if we're feeling this despondent, if we're feeling this pissed off, then a lot of other people are, too. If we can turn even some of that rage and sadness into votes, that may be part of the rallying cry we need to get votes out next year.
MO Senate passed their bill last night/this morning.
So, as these go to the SC, what do you think the chances are that Roe v Wade will be overturned?
I'm not going to lie... I'm really scared they'll overturn it. Honestly, I'll be shocked if they don't. Between Gorsuch and Kavanaugh... it just doesn't feel like a war we're going to win in the end. And this is what has me so scared. What do I do about this? How do I help prevent our country from sliding backward? I honestly don't know.
Alabama is like 46th in the country for healthcare, has one of the highest infant mortality rates, and is like 2nd in the country for gun deaths. Please tell us more about how every life is sacred, Governor. 🙄
Maybe they should expand Medicaid instead of dabbling in this bullshit.
Preaaaaaacccchhhh.
I read a good article this morning that put into words a lot of how I am feeling. In this country -- and especially these states that are passing these laws -- maternal mortality rates are dismal. A disproportionate amount of the woman who suffer in pregnancy are low-income women because they are unable to get adequate pre/post natal care.
These people who support these laws are more than happy to without even hesitating make women risk their lives -- when in no other circumstances do we make people take any risk to their lives, or even undergo a safe medical procedure they don't want, when if doing so will save another person's life (like donating blood or a kidney or piece of liver). So that is bullshit on it's own. But what makes it even worse is that these people have the power to mitigate the risk through expanding access to health care especially for low income women and they are like "nah."
I just read the bill text and in addition to how enraged I already was, NOW I'm enraged that they drug the holocaust into it. You can see the bill text at the link below, but here's the section:
"It is estimated that 6,000,000 Jewish people were murdered in German concentration camps during World War II; 3,000,000 people were executed by Joseph Stalin's regime in Soviet gulags; 2,500,000 people were murdered during the Chinese "Great Leap Forward" in 1958; 1,500,000 to 3,000,000 people were murdered by the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia during the 1970s; and approximately 1,000,000 people were murdered during the Rwandan genocide in 1994. All of these are widely acknowledged to have been crimes against humanity. By comparison, more than 50 million babies have been aborted in the United States since the Roe decision in 1973, more than three times the number who were killed in German death camps, Chinese purges, Stalin's gulags, Cambodian killing fields, and the Rwandan genocide combined."

Did anyone hear NPR this morning - they interviewed some young right to life woman and nobody else. It was crap reporting and basically just an endorsement of the bill and how it is sooo altruistic to help all living humans no matter how they are conceived. WTF, NPR?!?! They could have at least challenged her view and all they said was, well what about back alley abortions killing women? Ugh. Maybe it was because the reporter was ill prepared, but c’mon NPR - do better!

How fucking dare they exploit the murder of my family and innocent people all over the world just to serve their purpose of controlling women. How dare they compare the lives of millions of children and adults to clumps of cells. Yet another way these monsters pour salt in our wounds.

Can I also add, that the Dems should have tried to add a rider about additional population in Alabama meaning that the budget would need more money for benefits for kids healthcare AND a sign-on to reducing carbon emissions and increasing funding for climate mitigation activities. I would totally be petty like this. If you're going to make women have more babies/people to use earth's, and Alabama's, resources, then you have to off-set that with more $$ from your taxes.
The radical anti-abortion bill signed into law yesterday by the Governor of Alabama is a malicious assault on the rights and protections of women everywhere. This bill also represents an assault on the basic values of our country and of the State of Maryland.
I obviously have no direct control over the behavior of Alabama lawmakers who would thrust their religious interpretations upon those they are paid to represent, and who choose to weaponize their system of laws to punish women who are already experiencing great vulnerability.
However, I can work to ensure that Maryland's taxpayer dollars are not used to subsidize extremism. Furthermore, experience has shown that MONEY is the one thing that matters more to people of this caliber than their religious prerogatives.
It is in that spirit that, in my capacity as Vice-Chairman of Maryland's State Retirement and Pension System, I will ask our executive management to undertake a complete and thorough review of all relationships that we have with businesses located in the State of Alabama.
This will include a full inventory of assets that are invested in Alabama-based companies, as well as all investment managers, brokers and consultants that are headquartered, or have regional offices in that state. I will ask that this review and full inventory of business relationships be presented to the Board of Trustees on an expedited basis, so that we can hopefully initiate the process of full divestment from the State of Alabama.
In the meantime, I will ask that no System employees or trustees travel to Alabama under any circumstances - be it for professional conferences or meetings with current or prospective investment partners. It is my hope that this travel restriction would be replicated throughout Maryland state government as a whole.
It is my hope that this will put the "leaders" of Alabama, and those of other states who may be contemplating abusing public laws for theocratic gratification, on notice that this is, indeed, 2019. Gratuitous attacks on the freedoms and the well-being of women will come at a prohibitive price.
That's because he doesn't want this particular law to be the one that challenges Roe v Wade in front of the Supreme Court. He wants one headed there that is less extreme for it to have a higher probability of overturning it.

Yes, that's a good point to remember when people like him say "it went too far." they only mean from a legal strategy. I'm sure they love the substance of it and suffering it will cause.

I did and I was disgusted. However, something she said really struck a chord with me. It was about the pro-life movement valuing all life, regardless of how it started or where you came from. I think if the pro-life movement is to use this "motivation" for their agenda, they need eat their words:
If we are going to ban abortion and call it protecting and valuing all life, what about the lives of women children and families who are forced to live with that decision?
Are we also going to mandate paid sick leave so these women can attend prenatal care appointments? Are we going to mandate paid maternity leave so these women can recover from childbirth?
Are we going to mandate paid paternity leave so that fathers can be active participants in these child’s lives? And if a fetus is considered a child at conception, does child support start then too?
Are we going to provide mental health and social services for families who may now be overwhelmed with little resources?
Is there a plan to provide affordable childcare or living wages so that these women and families can provide for these very valuable humans?
Are we going to restrict gun laws so we can keep these valuable humans safe?
If we’re going to value life, let’s value the whole life and not just birth. Until a pro-life advocate is willing to take on these issues, I don't think we should engage with them.
AND WE NEED TO RE-NAME THE MOVEMENT TO PRO-BIRTH!!!

This is a dark time in the US. About a year ago, thousands of Irish emigrants were flocking home to vote to legalize abortion. I was looking at the #HomeToVote stuff from last year, trying to feel better.
The spread of the Pro-Birth movement is sickening. I wonder what the rest of the world thinks of it, and their thoughts on the state of the US.
Quote from Lindy West's appearance on The Daily Show (from @thedailyshow insta):
"Anti-Choice people are not trying to stop abortion, they are trying to legislate who can and can't have abortions. Because, conservative politicians - their wives, and mistresses and daughters will always be able to get an abortion somewhere. All Anti-Choice rhetoric does is keep people trapped in poverty for generations. That's the goal and if it wasn't the goal they would spend their time and money on comprehensive sex educations, free birth control, and free contraception."

I’m not fond of Franchot as a person but damn, this is an amazing statement.

Whenever I’need a pick me up I look back at those amazing and wonderful #hometovote stories. But then I usually end up feeling worse because I live here and not there 😢

I was going to respond with a string of expletives — you were much more articulate. Seriously, shame on them. How dare they.

IF these prolife assholes could manufacture 1/10 of the rage they have against abortion and channel it towards resources for families and children that are already born, it would be great. MI has something like 13,000 kids in foster care who need homes. Absolute crickets from these people on that topic though
In some ways, this one scares me more. Compared to Al, Ga, and OH, it comes across as almost reasonable at 8 weeks instead of 6, and no criminal charges against the women.
I listened to a really good (scary AF) podcast this morning about Operation Save America and their plans to take over government to create theocratic rule. This was recorded in Dec 2017 so it talks about Roy Moore’s senate run. They’ve come a long way on their plan since then. I lived in Flip Benham country for several years so I thought I knew about Operation Save America, but they’ve become more extreme since his heyday. It’s terrifying.
