Help a mom out- DS will go to Kdg this fall. Is PBK the way to go or should I go with Lands End or LL Bean? Is this the best price for PBK? (More $ than a comparable Lands End I was checking out)
My son has a LE one and it’s held up really well. He’s finishing first grade and used it in kindergarten as well. He’s rough on his backpack and it still looks great. I’ve washed it a few times as well. I’d like him to use it at least another year because we bought a larger one to get the water bottle gold, but we’ll see if I can convince him of that.
I bought my niece one when she started kindergarten, and she’s finishing 4th grade and still using it. Hers also looks great and has held up well.
For us, they used character back packs in K and 1st and wanted more neutral by 2nd and 3rd. Also, the cheap character ones only last a year or two at the most before literally falling apart. Even the Fila solid one I got ds from Kohls in 2nd grade looked really beat up by the end of 3rd. I got him a Jansport one this year and I'm hoping it lasts more than 2 years. It still looks good now, but who knows?
I would recommend Jansport. My older DD used the same one K-2 before she asked for a new one. It was still in good shape but she decided she didn't want a pink bag anymore and I let her get a different one since she got 3 years out of it. I think it could have lasted K-5.
The pottery barns ones I purchased, I always regretted, but the styles kept me going back for awhile. I’m the end, they were junk. They faded crazy fast. I like Lands End ones I’ve purchased. Super light weight, yet durable and never faded.
Interesting. We've had 2 backpacks and 2 lunchbags. I wash them regularly and we haven't had any issues. DD used her first one from age 1 through K and it still looks almost new.
My kids have the LL Bean backpacks personalized with initials only. DS1 has always disliked characters on clothes / backpack so his is solid blue. The backpack has a lot of life still left but he's going into third next year where they start to get homework so will likely upgrade to another larger LL Bean.

My H still uses his LLBean one from High School (it's over 20 years old!) and it looks better than DD's after a year of Kindergarten. We'll keep buying the fun ones for a while but will switch over when she's ready for something long-lasting.
