We are starting to plan to spend a few days at Disney before we spend the week with grandparents in Florida - early March 2020. I haven't been to Disney since I was a kid. We are looking at staying at the Polynesian for convenience with the monorail given our priorities will likely be Epcot and MK. Two kids - will be almost 5 and 7 at the time. I'm guessing my in laws will join us for the last day or so, but unlikely to stay at the Polynesian.
I've considered renting DVC points to save money, but I am also worried about cancellation. I have unfortunately dealt with recurrent pregnancy loss and are meeting with a specialist in July. This may impact our plans for our family with slight chance I could need to cancel due to being very pregnant (which would be kind of amazing after the last two years). Would travel insurance cover this (of course would purchase the policy before pregnancy)? I don't know a ton about DVC point rental.
Anyone been in a similar situation? Recommendations?
UPDATE: Contacted DVC point rental - it is coming back as $2147 for 4 nights in early March for lake view Poly studio. This comes to $536/night. I guess I was expecting it to be a bit lower for DVC point rental as when I had looked in the past, this was about what the normal price to book through Disney would be? Anyone have any insight?

I have stayed at the Poly with and without renting points. I know you can add some kind of coverage through one of point rental stores. But I not sure what it all covers etc. If you have any questions or need any help feel free to reach out to me regardless of whether you rent points or not.
The DVC Rental Store has a cancel for any reason Point Protection Plan for $1.90/point. If you get Poly for $19/point it's still cheaper than rack rate. They should be able to give you the details if you call or email them.
I rented points through the DVC rental store and bought the protection plan just in case. My kids were 4 and 7 for our stay and LOVED the Polynesian! Great pool, great restaurants, great hotel grounds, great location, great view of the fireworks- we are now Poly lifers. I definitely recommend DVC rental store to save a few bucks. They were really easy to work with and quick with communication.

We rented DVC points through DVC Rental Store and purchased travel insurance for peace of mind, but we did not need to use it. It was advertised as "cancel for any reason."
We loved the Poly, and renting DVC allowed us to stay at a deluxe resort for the cost of a moderate. My 7 and 9 year old kids loved the Lava pool, and the size of the resort and transportation to parks was much better than when we stayed at CBR the previous trip.

Have you checked to see what the standard room rate is for comparison?
Also, it looks like there is three weeks worth of dance championships plus spring break in there as well.

You are planning for the second highest season for DVC. The points to stay at the Poly during Magic season requires 23-27 points per night for a studio.
If you want to save some $$, stay at a different resort that doesn't take as many points to book. OKW (14-19 pts per night), SSR (14-18 pts per night), AKL (12-14 pts per night at both Kidani and Jambo) and even BLT (19-22 pts per night for standard view) require less points per night and can save you a decent amount of $.

Thanks. I'll look around a bit. We were thinking of the Poly for convenience - I presume we will do one day MK, one day Epcot and one day HS.
What's weird is the email from DVC rental says it is 13 points? Maybe it was a typo?

It could be $13 a point. The Poly starts at 16 pts a night for a studio. The more desirable the season, the more points per night.
Take a look at the new Riviera Resort. Points wise it is on par with the Poly (22-25 pts per night for a deluxe studio at Riviera) but it has gondola access to the Studios and EPCOT so you would only have to bus it to the Magic Kingdom
You mentioned lake view. Have you thought about the garden view. It is definitely cheaper. I loved our garden view which looked over the lawn and tiki torches. Overall I loved the Poly! We booked through dvc rental store and had a great experience.
We havenβt stayed at the Poly, but did do a week at Bay Lake Towers (BLT), one of the resorts mentioned above. Itβs a great location! We walked to magic kingdom every day, even if we spent part of the day at another park.

Thanks all. I submitted the DVC request. After some debate, decided to splurge on the DVC lake view to watch the fireworks. Our kids go to bed early and being able to sit out on the balcony with the view sounded great.

If you can, do a room request for the 3rd floor, closer to the TTC. We had fantastic views of the fireworks from that location. First floor will have reduced views due to the bungalows, 2nd floor view can be hit or miss. You'll want to find the music on youtube, search for Happily Ever After. The speakers they use on the beach are kind of far and hard to hear from some of the lake view rooms.

Awesome. Thanks. Do you have to make room requests for dvc early? We just submitted deposit but are waiting to hear back.

I would contact the rental company and get it on there. The owner youβre renting points from will have to make the request. Iβd give them as much lead time as you can.

You can also do it through Touring Plans if you get the subscription.
Touring plans canβt make dvc requests. Only the owner that books the reservation can do it.
It worked for us in April 2018! You just need a reservation number. I got pretty close what I asked for and TP followed up asking how successful it was and for my room view pic.

Interesting. I really was under the impression that only memeber services can do that for dvc reservations. Learned something new today!
