Come over analyze with me while I wait on a response.
So 16 months ago I was hired on as the VP of Business Development at a credit union. I run the sales and training departments, and all aspects of new hire on boarding. I actually interviewed for VP of Lending, but in talking to the CEO about the company's needs they didn't really need a VP of Lending. So after my interview, I called back and asked to meet with him again. I then pitched him and the CFO my dream job. Doing exactly what I love, what I am really good at, at my perfect salary and schedule (WFH options, very flexible). They loved it and hired me. It been challenging an exciting, and at times really frustrating, but overall - totally my dream job.
Thing is, my boss (the CEO) has a really hard time leading. He is very knowledgable, very hands on, but really struggles to have hard conversations with his employees, which includes the branch managers. He leans on me heavily to coach them, and give him the words and encouragement to hold them accountable.
So yesterday I pitched to him to make me the VP of Retail Operations. Basically everything that happens in the retail branches and all the staffs would funnel up to me, and then to him. So it puts me between him and the branch managers. I had a whole list of responsibilities I could take from him, those of mine that I would keep, and what I would pass on and those that I would pass it on too. Guys, he loved it! And because he totally knows my personality, he wasn't shocked at all when I asked for a 25% pay increase. So tonight at a board meeting and it will get brought up then, but probably won't be decided on until the next one next month. I do not have the skill set required to be chill about this for a MONTH!
So, wish me luck, send prayers, or fill the comments with gifs and jokes to entertain me FOR.ONE.MONTH.
**** Well, it turned out to be two month before it was official - but I got the promotion and the raise - all effective today!
My boss was super supportive of the move and what I wanted to do, so the board supported it too. I met with one of my employees yesterday to talk about the transition. I have also been interviewing for an opening I will have in my department and made an offer to a really great candidate last week. The rest of the year will be super busy, but I am excited to get to work!
madringal, rock on with your bad self. I'm impressed. If he sees the value you bring to the table, I'm sure your BOD will too. BOD agreed to his appointment as CEO because they (should) trust him. If he trusts you and tells them "she's going to make me a more effective leader" I'd assume they'd be on board. FX!

That's awesome! In my experience of dealing with many public/private Boards, seldom do they ever turn down a hiring/promotions recommendation from the CEO, because in the grand scheme of things, a 25% raise is a big deal to you, but it's a drop in the bucket for the organization, so I think you are all set!
That's amazing! Good for you! I'm sure that this is going to work out - it sounds like you executed your piece perfectly, and like k3am said, the CEO seems to know that you're going to make him look even better in this role. Win for all! Keep us posted!
I did basically the same thing a few months ago. However, I work for the government and the wheels of progress run very, very slow. We talked about it a couple of weeks ago. Still waiting.
