I just finished last night and have avoided this thread until today. Ack... I was so devastated for Luke that Hanna wasn't on the plane. Moira going into the plane and seeing all those faces - I wasn't expecting to be so happy and crying tears of joy at that.
So... the Americans were really going to let Serena have the baby if she cooperated? I mean the social worker said, "Don't say mom, that is confusing" and stuff, so I thought she'd just get visitation, but then when she noted that she gave up her rights for the baby, I was confused. Thoughts? They wouldn't have really let her have a baby that isn't related to her at all, right? I mean... that is so weird. And interesting how Fred turned on her about how they got the baby. I guess we'll see more of him in jail, huh?
downtoearth , I think she got sold a song on that one by the Americans. I think it was just a ploy to lure her over the border.
I wondered that, but also the flirty nature of Mark (the American in Canada) with Serena I think helped lure her too... don't you think? So I think it confused me too b/c I thought Mark might actually respect her or something?
Yeah, I think that Serena thought she was going to be able to see the baby (or maybe mother the baby? I don't know) but I think she was tricked.
Though - technically neither Luke nor Moira are related to the baby, either, so I'm not sure who exactly is supposed to be the legal guardian by default. I guess Luke is married to June, but he has no more biological connection to her than Serena so I'm not sure if that gets him a default guardianship or how that would work? I don't imagine he has any proof of their marriage though I would hope the Canadians would side with him over Serena anyway. We know that June wanted Nicole to be with Luke, but in reality would a government just let a child end up with some random guy because he claims he was married to its biological mother?
I think Mark saw Serena as another victim, forced to give up her career and her freedom, and then forced to help Fred rape other women.
Fred’s admission told Mark that Serena was as much abuser as Fred.
I thought it was a nice tie in to the assumptions in white women feminism, especially cig, rich, white women feminism.
Yes, I agree with this. I think he found Serena to be sympathetic up to that point, and it obviously pained him (for lack of a better phrase) when her real role couldn't be so easily ignored.
I assumed Serena expected to get visitation at least, and maybe thought Nicole would want her around as a mother and so that would convince the Canadians. It certainly is a complicated custody matter work neither biological parent free to go there.
