The ref seemed to be of the old-school "purist" mindset. That game play should only be interrupted for egregious fouls and maybe not even then. I blame her for the number of head-to-head contacts that happened in the game.
I got in a shouting match with my husband about this. When they called the penalty against Morgan, he was like "Oh, come on. No don't give a PK. That wasn't a penalty." I ended up pausing playback where you can CLEARLY SEE the defender was cleats up and kicking high with zero ball contact and telling him to shut up.
What he didn't want (eye roll) was for the PK to be the goal they won on. Because that ruins the beautiful game or some such horseshit. Once Lavelle scored her goal he settled down.
I also find it shocking that play wasn't stopped for Sauerbrunn until she flagged the ref down herself. If this were a men's game, there would have been a stretcher team on the field immediately. How do I know? Because there was one on the field in the Gold Cup for a hyper-extended elbow last night. Yeah, you read that right. Men - the weaker sex.
Finally, I am going to have to buy my first soccer jersey once they put that fourth star on it. Not sure who I'll get, but I might actually have to go with Lavelle, even though I hate the Badgers on principle.
I'm with your husband on this one. I didn't want the pk to be the game winning goal. Flip Side- a goal is a goal and a win is a win.
I agree. Not because I don’t think a penalty kick goal isn’t a goal but because then other countries would always say we only won because of a penalty kick.
If you can't get enough of that Rose Lavelle goal, here it is, 14 different ways. I especially love the slo-mo at 8:03, where you can clearly see her perfect fake-out of the defenders, and the brilliant teamwork to get her the ball.

The PK was well deserved and I was shouting at the tv when it wasn’t immediately called. I’m glad we got the penalty and scored. But I was very happy to see Lavelle finish the job because it feels like a more solid win to me.

I just bought two tickets to an Arsenal Women's game versus Tottenham in August (pre-season). They don't play at Emirates, which would be so close, but we can drive to the stadium where they play. I can't wait!

I was definitely glad when Lavelle scored for a variety of reasons.

Yeah, I also was just so happy for her. What an amazing way to end the tournament for her!
