We recognize that we badly mishandled this situation and our team’s response was inexcusable. As of yesterday, we have replaced the security team members working that day and the manager who was on duty. We are initiating additional, mandatory training on security awareness and unconscious bias for everyone on staff to prevent something like this from happening in the future. We’re deeply sorry that our guests were mistreated. This event does not reflect our company values of respect for all and creating a welcoming environment for our guests, and while we wish it didn’t occur at all, we are treating this moment as a valuable learning experience for our staff."

Maybe my standards aren’t high enough but what do you feel was half assed about it? They fired everyone involved and are doing additional training for everyone. Obviously it shouldn’t have ever happened in the first place, but I think this is them taking some good and quick steps to try and make up for it.

So when I first heard about this story, I recall reading a different statement from Angry Orchard that was very 'whoops a daisy, we'll look into it I guess' and Twitter et al was NOT having it.  I wonder if the statement quoted above came later after their initial reaction.  Because I remember nothing in that original statement about any of the staff being fired or even reprimanded.  I'll try to find it.

Nope. Hell no. Would not be going back there. Yes they have fired people and yes they are 'listening and learning' but I would be concerned that it wasn't the actions of a set of people at work on that day, but it demonstrated their overall shittiness and racism.

So here is the statement from Angry Orchard that I had read originally, that was woefully inadequate...

In a statement to PEOPLE, Angry Orchard said: “We reached out and spoke directly with the guest involved to express our apology and offer to make it right. Our security team approached a group of guests based on what they thought was credible information at the time. We believe that we mishandled the situation and we’re now working on additional training for our team to prevent something like this from happening in the future. We’re deeply sorry. The situation didn’t reflect our values of respect and creating a welcoming environment for our guests.”

There is then a more recent article that mentions that the staff in question were fired.  So I can't be sure, but it reads to me like they only really took any decisive action after they saw that people were NOT reacting well to their initial apology + vague promise to do some 'additional training'.  So they still get the side eye from me.

I agree with you, but it’s always the same old crap-we fired (sometimes) the people who were the problem and we’re going to take a few classes, so we’re all good right?  Nope, we’re not.  You ruined the proposal.  It shouldn’t be a “sorry, see ya later”

Honest question: What should they* do? Is there anything that can be done to 'fix' it? If a public apology, firing the people involved and retraining isn't enough, what is? 

*general 'they' - could apply to any business with this sort of issue.

ETA - obviously the best fix would be to just not have the problems in the first place, but it's obvious that we (national we) can't DO that just yet...

You're right - the original statement was very much a "well, oops." Should have included that in my original post, multi-tasking fail. 

I don't like that they used the word "replaced" instead of fired/terminated. Are they somewhere else on the property still working? This wasn't just ONE security member, this was several team members who thought it was appropriate to follow them out and pose waving to them - this is a culture vs. one person acting on their own. All they're missing is their MAGA hats in that photo.

Maybe it's a question of initial training and hiring practices. Racial and ethnic sensitivity training standard across all customer-service or security-oriented corporations for starters. Of course, I think our entire system of policing needs a major overhaul, so I'm not holding my breath for rent-a-cop organizations.

You're right, I do think it's fair to allow a business a day at least to investigate what actually went down.  I guess I wish that first statement had been more along the lines of 'we're aware this happened, we're very sorry, rest assured we are looking into it and taking it very seriously and will issue another statement shortly'. 

Instead, that first statement, especially with that line about 'they were acting on what they thought was credible information'...it read to me like their immediate, knee-jerk reaction was to defend the staff.  Conversely, I'm not sure knee-jerk reaction should be 'you're all fired' either.  

I don't know.  I suppose it's not the easiest thing to navigate 'correctly'.  Like thatgirl2478 said, the best case scenario would be to not have this type of shit happen in the first place, but I know no one is going to hold their breath on that.

I think this is so important, and not enough people consider it. All firms seem to care about is damage control, and not preventing the behavior before it happens.

I'm just starting my HR career, and I'm desperately trying to maneuver into Diversity & Inclusion. I'm really interested in training and hope I can get there before I turn 50 (3.5 years.) I want to help prevent shit like this from happening!
