I have two weddings coming up. One is in about 10 days, and the second is in early November. I have a basic black cocktail dress that's been my go-to for several years. I'd like to buy something new, but this looks good on me and works. I have some patent wedges in both ruby and nude that I used to wear with this dress, but they've become increasingly uncomfortable as I get older. I don't own a single pair of heels, and I hate wearing them - they're uncomfortable, and I suck at walking in them. But UGH, what do I DOOOOO for these weddings? I have a pair of basic black ballet flats that look OK, but not great, with the dress, but the shoes are getting kind of old and beat up looking. Basically all my shoes are grandma shoes these days because I wind up with so much foot pain any time I wear something trendy.

I got a pair of sparkly Anne Klein flats from DSW to wear to my cousin's wedding a couple of years ago, and got Superfeet inserts to put in them. They don't have the exact ones I bought anymore, but they do have at least one pair with rhinestones on them now -- Anne Klein Sport Aveline Ballet Flats.

Pointy toed flats (I find rothys more comfortable then other pointy flats because the fabric stretches a little around my toes). Or the wedges/etc and change into my basic black flats at the reception.
Basically all I wear are black flats, tennis shoes, flat black boots in winter, and ugly sportsy sandals, I'm not spending $$$ on dressy shoes I'll wear once.
I have two pairs of the Cole Haan Tali bow ballet flats, one in nude leather with a matching bow and one in "nude" velvet (really kind of a blush pink) with a glitter bow. I love them.
Those are stupidly expensive (most expensive pair of shoes I own and I agonized over the purchase), but I think something with a peep toe or pointed toe and some embellishment can look classy and dressy.

I've been known to wear my black Rothy's to formal events. I've realized no one notices my feet. But if I feel like being fancy, I have a few pairs of flats with embellishments.
I bought my first pair of heels in FOREVER to wear to an event earlier this month, then a week before sprained my ankle so was in a boot and didn't get to wear them anyway. That's what I get for even THINKING about heels. Figures.
I got these to be a bridesmaid in a wedding where heels would have made me taller than anyone else up there. Also wanted to be able to dance all night!
For me personally, I find that more stylish flats vs. “fancy” read as more formal. It seems like more of a dress choice - ie, cute black dress with leopard flats, up hair, and statement jewelry is dressier for me than a black dress and plain or sparkly black flats. The latter feels easy for me, vs. the former which is more of a choice and took a little more effort . YMMV, however - either way, flats can totally be dressy!
Its hard to say for sure without knowing what your basic black dress looks like, but, when I am wearing flats with a dress, I kind of go for a 60's inspired feel - but I think the dress needs to fit that aesthetic too.
