Brought to you by our neighbor stopping by and asking if our cameras were working a couple of nights ago because someone threw a rock through her window. We have cameras, but we have to bring them in to charge them and we've been lazy. I'm thinking of pricing out a whole system.
We don't have cameras, but we have an alarm system that the previous owners installed. We've kept up with it, but I don't know if we would have put one in ourselves.
No, most nights we don't even lock the back door. That's probably bad.
I grew up like this, and my parent still live this way.
They’re in a teeny, tiny town and lock absolutely nothing. There was a random burglary turned murder down the road from them last year in their town with literally one street, and still- nothing locked, garage door left wide open all hours.
I lock everything, everywhere.
I was home alone and binged season two of Mindhunter this weekend. I had the security system armed allllll damn day.

We have an alarm system with a motion detector in the open floor plan living/dining/kitchen area. It also has door sensors. We do not have window sensors. We also have a Ring doorbell and a Ring camera over the garage door to see the driveway and some of the front yard. When one of the cameras gets set off, they both start recording so that gives us almost a full view of the front of the house. I have the motion zones set up so they don’t record the street or the neighbors so we’d probably never be of help to our neighbors if something happened unless if someone came in our yard and set off the cameras. ETA: The doorbell is hard wired and I got a solar panel for the driveway camera so we don’t have to worry about charging batteries.

Voted no - I have my "guard dog" at home, but he's a 9-yr old, 10-lb Chihuahua/terrier mix. He does get awfully angry if something loud wakes him up from napping.
I also live in a large condo community that is about 50% retired people. They are on top of reporting anything suspicious, and the community is well guarded that way. The "nosy neighbor" aspect might seem a little annoying to some, but it's not too bad.

Nope, but I plan to get one for the new house. We're currently in a dense neighborhood on small lots where everyone can see everyone's business and our house is open floor plan where you can hear everything. New house is set away from a busy street, has more exterior doors, and is ranch style where you'd never heard the back door open from the bedroom. So if anyone loves their system, let me know!
No. Maybe we should but crime tends to be very low in our area and aside from our lives, there’s little of true value actually in the house. Tons of neighbors seem to have cameras, and based on our location, I have some degree of confidence that anyone trying to encroach on our property would appear on someone else’s feed. Basically I guess we rely on something like herd security. We’re also near a streetlight so hardly ever have our own outdoor lights on overnight either.

That's what our neighbor was doing and we failed her. *sad lol* There's some other mitigating circumstances that led her to be a particular target that we have no control over, though.

Our apartment overseas did have a security system, but we only set it if we were going out of town overnight. We never used it when we were home. Our apartment building had an entry code for the front door, and we kept our apartment door locked, but having the alarm armed felt like overkill.
I live in the city and don't have a system. I do have a ring doorbell that I don't particularly care for and find very creepy. I have lived in a condo (now townhouse) for the last 10+ years so I'm partly not concerned. My condo was not in a great part of the city. Not particularly bad by Chicago standards, but definitely not great. Never really concerned me though.
If I lived in the burbs and definitely if I lived in the middle of nowhere, I'd have a system. Being out there creeps me out like none other. I don't know...I get very freaked out when there's no one (or less people) around.
The previous owners installed an alarm system but we don't pay the monthly fee to keep it active. Honestly it doesn't seem to be worth the money.
This is where we are. We still set it at night and if we go out of town. The alarm will go off if something happens, but it isn't actively monitored so the police and alarm company are not called automatically. I figure the alarm going off (it is insanely loud) is a pretty big deterrent and if someone was breaking in, that would make them leave.
I also have a dog who wouldn't actually hurt fly, but likes to bark.
We're wired for one but we don't have a service. We have our own cameras installed facing the backyard and the front entryway, but we just monitor those on an app.

Us too. We live in a tiny rural town of ~2,000 people. I don't think that anyone here even locks their doors, let alone has a security system, lol.
This is my area too, lol. My parent's home (where I grew up) legit does not have a key. The house gets locked at night from the inside but that is it.
We live across the river about 4 miles away and while we do have keys to our home (lol) we only lock our doors at night. HOWEVER, I do want an alarm system for night because I have a fear of being attacked in our sleep (thanks, SVU!)
Our house has 20 year old ADT keypad and sensors but we don't use it. We have Ring cameras and floodlights. Eventually we plan to install the full security system and subscribe to Ring monitoring. It's a pretty good deal, especially if you buy from Costco.
Am I the only one who feels a little weird about Amazon owning my home security?

Nothing at all. Our house is attached on both sides so I like to think that no one will be interested in breaking into a house that's so close to the neighbors.
We have ADT and ring cameras. I come from NYC living, where you have like 5 locks on your door. That stuck with us when we moved to Miami. My mom still puts a broom across the door out of habit. I laugh but I’ll put something by the door when H is out of town too. Funny what habits stick with you throughout life.
