I reject this, as someone on the cusp between Gen X and Millennial. She was born two months from 1965, so I don't consider her a Boomer.
Anyway, by those dates Biden and Sanders aren't Boomers, but they are two of the Boomerist guys ever.
I find it ironic that someone who rejects the Millenial label is labeling others with their generational nickname.
Gen labels are a function of dates of birth, not personality characteristics. Pretty sure Harris doesn't care that she's a baby boomer.
I consider myself a Millennial even though I was born like five minutes before the official demographic cutoff.
Generations are artificial, especially for those of us who had half our high school class in one generation and half in the other. I'm just saying I don't consider Kamala a Boomer.
I honestly do think people will vote for Warren. I don't really line up with her on a lot of policies, but I find her so likable and endearing that she has become a top choice for me anyway even though I align better with other candidates. She has unexpectedly charmed me.
I think so too. I suppose only time will tell but I’ve been impressed with the gains she has made and level of excitement she has generated in several of the key states. I didnt come out of the gate expecting to like her as a presidential candidate but her campaign has kinda won me over. They’re working a lot SMARTER than Biden is for sure. I actually think she would do well in the general but that’s just me.
FWIW almost everything I said above also applies to Harris, except that I knew I’d love and support her out of the gate.
Still Harris/Warren in pretty equal measure, with a side of Castro.
I really liked Booker before he announced. I've followed him for a few years and unlike some, I felt like his "I live in public housing" schtick was pretty genuine. And in all those years as Newark mayor and Senator, anytime someone asked him about his sexuality or personal life he always said something akin to "it's not your business and it doesn't matter", which I admired coming from him. The knee-jerk response for someone in his shoes who is thinking of running for president in the near-isa future would be (or would have been at the time, pre-Buttegeig) to make it clear that he's straight. And I admired that he never did that.
But then all of a sudden when he's running for president, surprise! He keen to let everyone know that he's in a relationship with a woman, after refusing to discuss his personal life on principle for so long. It felt cheap and fear-based and really let me down. Obviously I'm not over it yet.
So sparkythelawyer , who do you think people will vote for then?
The purple leaning people from the purple leaning states in my world who have spoken to me about it are not a fan of her. I hope they'd vote for her anyway in the General. But anytime I say who they tell me they'd vote for I just get a bunch of responses about "But electability is bullshit!" So I guess I'm just supposed to ignore those people or something.
I think people want a return to some middle ground. And that's not Warren.
Again, I'd vote for Warren if she is the nominee. Promise.
I think Warren could actually attract purple state people. She speaks to purple state economic anxiety. I’m concerned she won’t bring out non white voters in a general. I’m concerned Trump will destroy her on the debate stage.

Disclaimer: I was sadly unable to watch the debate last night.
Warren excites me because she's even with some missteps, I think she's incredibly qualified to be POTUS and personally, I love her life story. I don't agree with all of her plans, but I agree with a lot. We just see eye to eye on so much. So she's my #1 right now.
But, Harris also excites me. Castro excites me. And while I will vote for whoever I truly believe is my favorite choice in the primary, I would be lying if I said I didn't believe Harris or Castro could excite more voters in the general election. We neeeed turnout.
I really like Buttigieg but run for other stuff first, please. I'd probably have Booker way higher on my list if I didn't know too much about him from his Newark days. But trust that I'll be volunteering for his campaign if he wins. I don't hate Klobuchar but just doesn't stand out in a crowded field. I'm rolling my eyes less at O'Rourke these days but I still wish he was running against Cornyn instead. Biden and Sanders need to just go - I don't care about their ages, I care that Biden just doesn't align with what I'm looking for in a POTUS and Sanders is nowhere close either. Yang...thanks for playing.
I don't think ANY of the candidates are a shoe-in yet for the nomination. All of them have issues with one or more of the following types of voters:
1) Getting people who would vote blue but didn't vote in 2016, to actually show up to vote in 2020. 2) Getting 'purple/red' voters to turn blue in 2020. 3) Getting non-voters to care enough to vote blue in 2020.
Biden for example I think is terrible at #1 but probably stronger at #2 because he wouldn't 'scare' them. I am not convinced that anyone has shown they can achieve #3.
IDK, Obama wasn't considered electable until he was elected. So I tend to think it's just an argument put forth by center people backing their candidate. NH and Iowa are great places for the early caucus and primary because these are not deep-blue states. If they choose Warren, I'm pretty satisfied that she can win over Michigan and Ohio, given enough exposure.
I don't agree with all of Warren's policy proposals, but I think she would make an amazing President. She's smart, she can lead, she can relate.

This is what I come back to every.single.time.
I am so scared we are all going to put our tail between our legs because we are worried what the “purple” people want and then we will elect someone who is uninspiring. That is how we get Trump for 4 more years.
I live in Iowa. The moderate voters are my people so I am not out of touch with the voices chiming in about who and what is electable.

Do you mean destroy her as in bully her? Or actually win a debate? I just cannot see the latter, at all.
Also despite the polling numbers I think it is Biden that gives us the worst shot at beating Trump. Anyone else in the top 4-5 I think could pull out the numbers we need.

Yeah he plays dirty. She plays straight. She’s a policy wonk. He’s an ass hole. Can she effectively defend herself against him?

I answered a robo call this morning hoping it was a poll. It was the DSCC asking for money, but they did ask who was my top pick after last night's debate. When I answered "Harris", the caller made a sound of surprise. Now I am curious what answers they are getting.
Just call me old faithful because I am still firmly in the Harris camp and crossing my fingers for Castro as VP.

Aren't these polls still based on landline calls? Which would mean they're predominantly polling older people, which won't necessarily reflect the way voters will actually vote in the primary. We really need to revamp polling methods.

Yea, I see what you're saying. I think I am just naive in that, to me, if she just ignores and doesn't fall into a trap with him, and keeps on message, she wins. But you're probably right, there are a lot of people who would see ignoring his BS as losing.

I’ve seen her be plenty pithy and she is quick on her feet. I think she can rise to the occasion. More importantly, I think the folks working with her on debate prep aren’t delusional enough to think that their primary debate strategy is going to be effective in the general - she will adjust accordingly if she gets there.

I'm pretty sure Castro was auditioning for VP last night. I love a Warren/Castro ticket. I don't think he was unfair to Joe at all, so I'm kind of annoyed at all of the backtalk he's getting on the twitter.
I'm also totally over every time someone says anything to the effect of "Okay, let's settle down, we can't be divided, this is what the voters hate about Washington". Like, stop tone policing. It's a debate and an election. I want to know what their positions are and what their demeanors are like and how they respond under pressure.

There are people from all over the spectrum in purple states, though. It's a fallacy that everyone in purple states are moderates who are just waffling there in the middle.

I don't disagree. All I can do is respond to the one's in my universe and what they are telling me.
FWIW I don't think Trump will agree to any debates.
Agree. Bumblefuck will simply toilet tweet some insane bullshit. No actual debate benefits his “shortcomings”.
I've read a couple very convincing opinion pieces and one very convincing Twitter account that he wont be able to... Basically, the argument is that need on the dementia symptoms he's been showing and how rapidly things seem to be progressing, he'll be too far gone to even gave an attempt to keep it secret.
I'm not totally sure I buy it. I kind of think he'd just hurl insults and ramblings a la Pocahontas, gay jokes, bad hombre, etc.
He was a bumbling idiot in the debates last time around and that didn’t matter. He just has to be a general asshole to please his base and he’s quite practiced at that. They DGAF if what he says makes any sense or not.
Still would be very upset if Warren or Saunders wins the nomination. Of course, I would vote for them over Trump, but I would hate to have to do so.
What now? I can see not having Warren as a top pick but what in the world would prompt a “very upset” response?
Partly because I disagree strongly with some of her fiscal views. Partly for personal reasons for things she said about an immediate family member, and I’ll leave it at that.
I've been all in on Harris since day one and I honestly don't see that changing. She's going to be my primary vote unless something drastic happens.
I also like Castro. I did not see his Biden attack last night. In spite of that, I think he's still my second favorite candidate.
I would be more than happy to vote for Warren and will happily get behind her if she wins the nomination, but she's not my favorite.
The rest... meh. I like Pete, but he has no business being president. I'd be on board with Booker, but I just don't see him getting anywhere close to the nomination. All the old white dudes can take a hike.
smock, the conversation has kind of moved on from this, but since you asked, the Cusper generation between Boomer and GenX is known as Generation Jones -- en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generation_Jones
I’m a recovering republican in a red state. If you would have asked me in 2018, I would have said Sanders and Warren were my bottom 2 choices because they were far too liberal. Warren has completely won me over. She is incredibly likable and connects with people. She is smart, feisty, and compassionate. She is very trustworthy as well — you know she’s going to make great decisions in the best interest of others. I think she’d wipe the floor in a debate with Trump because she could respond so well to him. My only concern with her now is her age, but she seems about 15 years younger than she is so it’s less of a concern. I would still be happy with Harris, but she I don’t feel the same sort of excitement and spark when I listen to her as I do with Warren.
This may be unpopular but I have to say that this current field of candidates makes me think that (1) Hillary Clinton was a fantastic candidate** and (2) the reason basically nobody ran against her was because nearly everyone in the party knew this.
**through the lens of 2016. I don’t think she should run today for many, many reasons. I just don’t think anyone on this stage today is as good as she was in 2016.
I don’t have a favorite. All I really care about is Biden and Bernie losing. I feel as though their presence is distorting the entire race. They have no business being on that stage.
