This made me think back to May of 2017 and the huge clash and violence at the Turkish Ambassador's Residence in DC.  Erdogan's thugs beat several protesters, and the charges brought against most of them were later dropped.

I looked up the event page on Wikipedia (sorry for it not being a better source, but the page seems fairly accurate), to remember the timelines, and it's the same shit and different day from the Trump Administration and Turkey:

This just makes me so sad.

Exactly one year ago, I was in Jordan on a healthcare trip providing care to Syrian refugees. The borders had just reopened between Jordan and Syria and the people were SO excited to be able to go back home. The feeling safety had finally come to where they felt they would be able to safely return home.

One friend had been tortured by Assad troops for 6 months. He left and hasn't been back. He was so excited to return home to see his family. He bought his bus ticket right away. We thought there would be a great influx of people back in to Syria.

Unfortunately that didn't play out how everyone had hoped. Sieges on Idlib happened and everyone decided it was more of a symbolic gesture than actual reality and not many people returned. Now the conversations have turned to even more feelings of hopelessness, being betrayed and forgotten.

I return in 2.5 weeks. We'll see if anything is different but I doubt it.

They've been silent about him but have been vocal about the withdrawal. The younger ones don't really understand what the Kurds have been to us, but the guys like in the tweet are pissed. I've been getting into some arguments with some of them because I don't want them to be silent about the choices they made. I had to listen to so much bullshit in 2016 about "if we had done what she had done, we'd lose our clearance and be kicked out" and so I want to shove their faces into this and ask them if a few emails on a phone are as terrible for our national security as thousands of ISIS members going free. At least a couple of them have finally said they made a mistake in voting for him but say she might've been just as bad. I know with 100% certitude she wouldn't have abandoned the Kurds.

Dumb question, but wasn't his whole reason for withdrawing the troops in the first place specifically because he promised feel-good nationalistic sentiments about bringing them back to their families? I know that there was also some wink-wink-nudge-nudge in Erdogan's direction, but aside from that.

When so many of his advisors were telling him not to do it, was there another reason beyond pandering to his base and making shortsighted gestures?

(I am also fully aware that his supporters will latch onto the fantasy and ignore the reality that these troops aren't actually "coming home", but I just want to understand how hypocritical this whole situation is.)

If it's possible, I'm now even more enraged that he is essentially going back on this decision after several hundred ISIS supporters/fighters were freed due to his dereliction of duty. What a fucking coward.
