My bus isn't running because it's Columbus day. I of course did not realize this till I'd stood in confusion at the stop for 5 minutes wondering where everyone was.
My mom is having a knee replacement surgery this morning. In July 2018 she had a spinal decompression due to spinal stenosis, less than a month later she broke her hip and had surgery to repair it. The surgeon should have replaced her hip, but didn't and she ended up having replacement surgery in December. In April she slipped outside and broke her pelvis. Her orthopedic misdiagnosed it and she walked around on it far longer than she should have. Her knee, which was already in poor shape, took a beating. So here she is. This last month she has basically been unable to walk. If she sat any longer than 10 minutes when she stood up she would have to stand for 5 minutes before she could start to walk. She's gone from being a super active grandmom and person to barely wanting to do anything due to being embarrassed about her condition. Praying so hard this gives her back her life.
readyin07, I hope your mom's surgery goes well. I was talking to a man at PT last week, and he said that within days you start feeling like a new person once your knee is replaced. Most of the pain (in his opinion) was just healing from the incisions. The near instant lack of pain in the joint was life changing for him.

The Bahamas called Columbus day discovery day. Now it's national heroes day. People bitch and moan as much as they do about dropping columbus day in the States because of PC snowflakes. There's a huge dose of "I don't have a national hero because JESUS." I'm not at all exaggerating. That's literally how I've seen people write it.
Fun fact: Denver doesn't have columbus day which means no free parking meter days. Ask me how I know!
It's actually a national holiday here in Thailand, too. It's the observed anniversary of the king's death (actual was yesterday). I saw no sign of this anywhere. I only knew of it b/c of a facebook group I'm on and people making plans for a 3 day weekend.
Edited: They changed in 2013. I don't know why I'm just now seeing irate posts about it.

WE have a National Heroes' Day here too which is next week Monday. It seems fairly common among the English-speaking Caribbean countries. I think when we became independent, a lot of us decided we needed some of our own Heroes to look up to and admire so implemented it then.
Random fact - our Heroes include Marcus Garvey and Nanny of the Maroons - a (possibly mythical) woman who led the Maroons in their fights against the British.

Thank you so much for saying that! I joined a knee replacement facebook group and the stories or recovery are incredibly BAD. Even at her pre-op meeting the surgeon kept telling her how bad it was going to be...But she is really positive. They say the pelvis is one of the most painful injuries and she survived that so she has a pretty good attitude (for her, the women in my family aren't known for their positivity lol).

readyin07 all three of my mom’s brothers have had knee replacement surgery. The recovery was tolerable and for all three it gave them their life back! The first few days were rough, but once they got past the jump it was smooth sailing! They all golf and bike and hike regularly and we’re able to get back to those activities very quickly!
There are two helicopters circling my office and every cop car in the county is driving around outside. Apparently there was a cop shot nearby and they haven't caught the person who did it.

I'm sitting on my porch because I have today off. I forgot about one of the Halloween decorations we put up yesterday and it is mostly hidden by a column from where I am sitting - until a breeze just sent a giant spider blowing into my line of sight and just scared me to death.
I have a head cold and despite heavy NyQuil did not sleep last night. I also have a huge project due at work tomorrow, so I can’t rest today. Happy Monday to me.
readyin07, your poor mom has been through the ringer! I hope her surgery and recovery go well. Most older relatives in my family have had knee replacement, and my H had his replaced about 6 months ago. All in all the surgeries were very successful, though the recovery is hard work (lots of PT and home exercises).
We are traveling back from visiting the ILs this weekend. It seems like most people have to go to work and school today, but all of us are off, which made for a nice long weekend. The heat has finally broken somewhat in FL, so we are excited to be able to actually spend time outside again!!!

Our neighbors put up a fake graveyard with a grim reaper, and every time I look outside now I have to do a double take. Is that an actual person? Nope just the creepy neighborhood grim reaper.
The school I work at is closed for fall break. Our biggest fundraising event of the year is on Thursday so I don’t have time to be “off” today. Meanwhile my boss planned a weekend trip to California and dumped all the last minute errands and other work on me 😡
I had a stent placed in my left leg vein this morning and was not prepared for the back pain it’s causing. Completely normal, but ooof. I didn’t need any pain meds after an abdominal surgery but I’m sitting here watching the clock, waiting until I can get some more Motrin.

Off for Indigenous People’s Day today which is nice. Decided to go to barre because I’m a masochist. Also picked up a really cute puffy vest while waiting around for class to start. I’m flying tomorrow to Atlanta and it’d better be warm there because New England is Full Fall and I’m cooooold.
Had our siding replaced last month but there are some pieces that are slightly different in color. So they are here ripping it all down and putting all new siding up. The banging is driving me insane already.
My friend just learned at age 34 that you aren’t supposed to clean your vagina with soap and I am wondering how many other people don’t know this. So this is your reminder! Vaginas are self-cleaning! Don’t mess up your Ph with soaps and bodywash!

Like her literal, anatomical vagina? She was fingering herself with soapy fingers or using a soap dildo or something? What the hell.

I am...very perplexed by this. Was she putting soap/bodywash in her actual vagina? Is this a thing people do?
Whenever I am reminded that Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green are married, I am surprised anew. It's a very Priyanka Chopra-Whoever Jonas Brother pairing to me. Like, girl, you are smart, talented, and hot, are you sure?
Yes, this is shallow of me and of course I have 0 actual details about what any of these people are like. I know.

I am very excited if this turns into something like WashclothGate. (which, by the way, is why today I use my washcloth religiously)
lemoncupcake, taratru, kilgrave so the conversation actually started as a discussion on whether people used washcloths, their hands, loofahs, etc when they shower. And I think she asked what people use to clean their lady parts if they DON'T use a washcloth and several of us were like....well I don't clean that, you're not supposed to clean inside....just the outside. Apparently her mom taught her to use soapy water/body wash and washcloth to clean up inside! She said she didn't feel clean unless she did. So then it was education hour, lol. She was mortified that she didn't know this.
I don't really know how I knew.....probably message board convos, magazines, articles, I think my GYN probably mentioned it once or twice?
