The upper level of our house has original hardwood floors from 1960. When the flippers renovated the house, they stained(?) the floors with a grey color, but I am almost positive that they didn't poly the floors. They aren't shiny. I've been dry mopping the floors since we moved in, but it's grossing me out that I haven't been able to wash them. I'm afraid of getting them wet, but I also have no damn idea how to figure out what they did to the floors when they refinished them, which of course determines what you can and can't do to clean- right?
Can anyone point me in the right direction to be able to figure this out?

Are you sure it's just not just really low-gloss poly? My contractor swears there's two coats of poly on my new stair rail, but it's super-dull to me and doesn't look like anything at all, but I definitely trust him. As for how you'd check, though, I have no idea. :-)

I don't think so, because I dropped a spoon with buttercream on the floor and immediately picked it up/wiped the floor, but there's a fun little dark residue spot there now. :\
Uhh...pick a hidden corner (inside a closet?) And scrape it a bit. If flakes of stuff that isn't wood come up, there's a coating. If splinters come up...it's naked wood?

Ohhh...yeah that sounds like naked wood. Call in a floor person for a quote to have it coated and ask what they think.
That definitely doesn't sound like there is any top coat on there. Are you handy at all? It's actually a pretty simple DIY project. If not, I'd definitely call in an expert.
@sameoldstory, I'm pretty handy. I don't want to fuck this up- but I would like to give it a go. Worst case scenario, I have to pay to get it fixed, right?
What should I be googling for info? Any specific sites you rec?

If you use the water based poly it's not that big of a problem putting it on DIY. Heck, we used oil based and it was NBD. Moving all the furniture was a different story... :/
