circa1978 I am so glad you said the thing about the high school question. It really isn't as cute as people think it is. It's actually pretty terrible. A new, pretty cool, apparel company there made a tee shirt for this question and I cringed. It's gross.
I don't think anyone is hating on West County-- unless I missed something? It just bothers me that (not necessarily here, but in general) West County is often the only or top recommended place for living when there are lots of perfectly nice other places to live there.
sproctopus , Agreed. It's problematic for a lot of reasons and I feel like people who move here are just WTF for years trying to figure it out.
St. Louis CAN be really open and welcoming. But it has a weird tendency to box you into a category with a quickness and where you choose to live or send your kids to school is oddly political in a way I haven't experienced elsewhere.
When we moved "back" to STL (I'm from Chesterfield but left at 18; H never lived here before we relocated for his job) we also got the hardcore push to west county. We wanted to live in Soulard/Lafayette Square, maybe Tower Grove, but we ended up buying along the 64/40 corridor west/central because we were kind of bowled over by the amount of house we could get for the price, especially after living in south Florida. One "good" thing about it is that there are more transplants in west county I think overall, so it's not like you are moving into a neighborhood where people's families have been living for four generations or whatever. South City, IMO, can be insular that way.

Yes. Absolutely. Also, the thing about Catholic schools is also so strange and unlike anything I've experienced in the other places I've lived.
I grew up in North County (Florissant/Ferguson) and would move back there in a heartbeat if it were an option for my career, but it isn't.

I lived in St. Louis (Kirkwood) for 3 years and just loved it. I miss it so much, we probably should have never left.
I don't know your lifestyle/preferences when it comes to homes and neighborhoods but I would recommend starting in mid county (Webster Groves, Richmond Heights, Kirkwood, Creve Coeur, Olivette, Maplewood, Brentwood), farther out west (Ballwin or Chesterfield but east of the Missouri River) or south county (Affton, Crestwood, Mehlville). Commuting to the central city from St. Charles would be a bear, not to mention, there are for more interesting places to live in the STL area!

I went to college in Florida with ONE other kid from STL. Of course, that was the first question asked. He said JFK and I said Mehlville. I think that was the last time he ever spoke to me. That's cool though, I wear my south county hoosier with pride.
