I work at a bookstore. The district manager organizes the party and all four area stores attend. It is free for employees, we can bring a guest, and they cater (burgers and pizza and the like, although one year they did Chipotle and it was amazing). They give everyone one free drink ticket, and then you have to pay. They usually have it somewhere fun, like a bowling alley or an arcade. Last year it was at the zoo in the penguin house, which is cool in theory, but it smelled like fish, which put a damper on the evening.
Our org’s party is drinks and heavy hors d’oeuvres at a restaurant and our department usually goes out to boozy brunch (there are 7 of us) and we do not pay for either.
Yes, though my department met for the first time today to plan it. So we shall see if we actually pull amything off starting this late!
We are planning to do a breakfast buffet in the office and a Yankee swap, plus some kind of charity donation. We will have a $5 suggested donation toward food, and our VP will pay the rest. We are a state University so we can't use tax dollars for department parties.
There is also a party with the President and thrown by the division head. I think food is provided but its not at a meal time so idk what. Definitely no drinks.
Last christmas I worked in a super isolated role and wasnt invited to anything, so I am just happy to have coworkers this year lol.
Eta: also we are closed for 9 work days over Christmas/new years so being paid fpe those days without having to use vacation more than makes up for it!
No we do not pay for ours. All staff and their families get a 2 night paid stay at a mountain resort an hour from town. There’s a casual party on Friday night, and a formal banquet on Saturday night with huge buffet and a few drink tickets per guest. They used to also do a brunch on the Sunday but they cut it out a few years ago.
We have a party on a non-traditional holiday, so as not to conflict with the 19 events going on in December. Employees are asked to pay $5 + $5 for their guest to reserve their spot. You get your money back at the door, and the any money not collected goes in to the prize fund for the next year. We usually have heavy apps and I think everyone gets 2 drink tickets.

We do one on work hours (actually next Friday!) at the end of the day. HR puts it on. They do tons and tons of heavy apps and desserts, punch, tea, etc. There’s a cash bar (we’re state gov, so it’s too big of a pain in the ass to offer free booze).
It is so great. My unit goes together, we chat, we eat, we leave a little early and enjoy having a little extra time for our weekend.
We do. We do not pay, it's at my boss's house, there is booze, and people go all out. One year, he left because he had another party, returned at 11:00, and a crew of us were still there...
I teach middle school. That might be relevant here
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
We do not this year. We used to have a lunch during work hours where managers purchased all of the meat and a vegetarian entree. Everyone else brought in potluck. We went back to work afterwards. I think it stopped 2 years ago.
My company does something for the holidays every year. This year it is an at work lunch buffet with raffle tickets to put in a drawing for the gift basket of your choice. Next year will be an off-site buffet dinner, usually 2 drink tickets per person, spouses invited, with a gift basket drawing and raffle for larger prizes. In the years we have an onsite holiday party there is a family oriented summer event at an amusement park, zoo, sporting event, etc. We don't pay for anything except extra drinks if desired.
My work (small company) we go to dinner somewhere nice like a steakhouse. The owners pay for everything and we get a bonus check that day.
For DHs we go to a nice steakhouse. everyone drinks a lot and orders a ton of apps, food etc. sometimes people stay in a hotel after at their expense which we are going to go this year.
I miss my old company which was a huge party with no expense spared. Usually at the Four Seasons. Tons of drinks, food and a band. They would also give away tons of door prizes with good stuff like iPads and airline gc’s. People would get really drunk! It was great people watching. Most would stay in the hotel at a discounted rate.
I don’t know since I just started a new job. My last office varied from a small cash bonus to cold PF Chang’s at the bosses home. I’m guessing we don’t do a party since I haven’t heard anything and there are only 4 of us!
Yes and we don't pay and spouses are invited. We have it at our office (we have meeting/rental space). It's a plated dinner, open top shelf bar, and a live band. They also pay for Ubers. It's a drunken mess of a time, but super fun. This is actually only the third year we've had it and I've been there 15. Prior to this we'd have a "pig out day" which is cutesy for pot luck.
We get a lunch with a $25/person budget. And we usually take a 2 hour lunch
Hiiii!!!! I feel like I conjured you with my mind! Lol, I was *this* close to tagging you in the ML 10yr challenge thread. Good to see you, I hope all is well:)
We have a lunch and we pay for it (it was about £25 for two courses and wine), no partners/spouse, we can take rest of day off. I work at a university in a counselling service that is strapped for cash.
Yes we have one (fancy lunch and Yankee swap) and no we don’t pay for it, but if we want to participate in the Yankee swap we obviously pay for the gift. But it’s voluntary.
Yes we have one, yes we pay b/c Government. This year it's $25pp at Great Wolf Lodge at lunch time. People are fussy about how far they have to travel and no one wants to go after work.
Oh I would not pay for a company holiday party ever lol.
If the place of employment couldn’t host a party (I see that seems to be true for schools and government agencies) I would be fine participating in a potluck or whatever. I would even go out with a group of coworkers for dinner, it I would not want to prepay for food I have no control over and don’t get to pick myself!
My husband’s old job at a party that was free with drink tickets but his boss would always slip us more. His current job doesn’t have a holiday party but a free day at an amusement park (with food included) in the fall. His boss also took them out to happy hour recently and the company gave her some money towards it and she paid the rest. He was surprised and ready to pay but that was nice.
When I taught there was a potluck (don’t do that) and when I was at a Catholic school there was a party at the priests’ house with desserts and alcohol.
WE have it some years. Usually an evening on the lawns of our offic with heavy apps and some drinks. But it's usually a saturday before christmas and no partners invited which always annoys me so I don't usually go!
This year the social committee have planned a day out at a waterfalls with swimming pool. Er, not really wanting to put on a swim suit around all my co workers....
We typically have a team lunch before the holidays, then drinks/finger foods (catered) in the office starting at 4ish a week or so before Christmas and a NY party after the holidays which usually is a themed/costumed thing with dinner, drinks and an activity before partners can join for a dance & drinks.
All of it is funded by the office, including ubers/taxis home after the NY party. There's about 40 of us in the company.
The university I work for has a holiday lunch, $10 a ticket. I have never gone, but this year two faculty members purchased tickets for all of the grad students and staff to attend. It was very nice of them, but I wouldn't pay $10 to go there myself (sounds like I'm a cheapskate but it just doesn't mean that much to me when it's the entire university invited).
Our department/college is newly formed and this year they are having a get together with a cash bar/no food at a local brew pub.
H is a union tradesman, so he works for multiple companies through out the year and is always invited to all of their parties. They are always open bar/free meal, but it requires traveling so he goes to the ones that he wants to attend and I stay home with the dog (the companies typically rent his room as well). He has more fun with his work friends without worrying about me and I don't want to go where I don't know anyone, so it works (and I get the house to myself and can binge watch whatever I want!!).
