I am fine with pricing if it is upfront. If it is not upfront because it is hourly than I would not be interested in it.
I don't want to spend a lot of time at salons in general, so if I need to come in for a free consultation for an hourly quote, then come back for 2-3 hours to get a color and cut then no thanks. Mine only charged me $60 for roots, but she took forever like 2.5 hours without blow drying or styling or cutting. So I ended up going back to coloring my own roots for $10 and 20 minutes.

If it's a "thing" here I haven't heard about. I actually just went to a new stylist on Monday. She only charged me $80 for balayage and a trim. I nearly fell over. I am usually charged a minimum of $130, usually more like $150 (LCOL area). She was also faster than anyone has ever been and I don't know if I've ever love a hair color more. So win, win, win I guess!
I could get behind this because I have approx 5 strands of hair and it take 15 seconds to cut it. I recently started going to Hair Cuttery because it's hella cheaper and my cut is not complicated and I am a hot mess in a bun 90% of the time. I pay a premium for my color, and feel it's worth it.
I’ve never seen this. I would not want the price tied to the time it took because I wouldn’t want to pay extra for someone who is slow, but I also don’t want someone to rush to save me a few bucks.
I’ve always seen it where more complicate (and time consuming) jobs cost more. And I’ve seen an additional charge for extra long or thick hair if they have to use more product than average. Both of those seem reasonable to me.
Reading all of this just makes me more glad that my stylist does my hair from her home and she charges less than what the salon used to when she was working there (she left the salon after having her 3rd kiddo and I was one of a select few clients she took with her). I love it because she has been doing my hair almost 8 years now and I love her kids and they just moved and while my hair was processing I got a tour of the new house!
Not really related but yesterday I went to a salon for the first time and they charged separately for a haircut. Never in my life have I been to a salon where they charge for a cut in addition to the price for a color/balayage. Is this normal? It was $50 more than my usual place so I probably won’t go back.

Yes. I get charged separately for: Cut Highlight Single process Glaze (if applicable) Blowout (optional with just color)
My salon doesn’t do this but it’s interesting. My stylist recently posted something on her Instagram about how today’s color techniques/trendy looks take much more time and effort. It wasn’t bitching but an educational tone, encouraging clients to allow enough time and have patience. (I think some of that is on the salon though because no one has ever told me how much time I should expect.) So this might be a response to salons seeing that they can take on fewer clients in a day than previously?
My stylist just decided that going forward, she wasn't going to do any extreme lightening or color corrections because she found that people just didn't realize how much effort it took, and often they didn't have realistic expectations, even after she'd advise them, so they'd end up unhappy, or she'd have to do additional work to make them happy. She is a fantastic colorist with a very steady book of clients, so she feels like it's just not worth the time anymore.
Newer clients of hers also pay by the hour - I don't know how that works out as I am kind of grandfathered in with previous pricing.

It is for me. Everything they do is a separate charge, regardless of the level of fancy of the salon.
My last one, I was charged for the following;
Cut, Partial Highlights, Gloss, Something else that’s escaping my memory
In reverse to yours, I’ve don’t think I’ve gotten a color and cut and had it all one fee. I’ve had some salons have a package price where they’ve discounted the individual prices when you get them all together. So a cut ($50) and highlights ($150) as a package might be $185.
I need ham like water Like breath, like rain I need ham like mercy From Heaven's gate Sometimes ham salad or casserole or ham that’s free range, all natural I need ham

I've never had it packaged either, unless it was a promotion like you said. Even hair Cuttery et al break it out.

Wow this is surprising! My usual girl is $160 for balayage and $30 up charge for toner. But she doesn’t charge me separately for my cut. Yesterday, I paid $160 for balayage, $30 for toner and $48 for a cut. She was going to charge me $15 to style it but I was headed home for the day so I didn’t bother.

I'm confused. You broke it out like my person does. Do you mean actually rung up separately? Because I do pay all on one bill and tip as if it's together.
ETA: or are you saying the cut is included? My guy charges $90 for a cut (before tip) so he'd never throw that in for free, hence my defection to Hair Cuttery

My brain isn’t working. The girl I went to yesterday broke it all out. The person I usually go to charges $160 for a balayage but it includes a cut. So when I went in and saw it was $160 for the color I assumed that included the cut like it usually does. Although actually my normal persons prices have recently gone up so it’ll be around $180 next time.
$90 for a cut? Any cut? Man I’m cheap I’m not paying $90 for a 5 minute trim.

Yep! Any cut. I'll go back to him if I am trying something new but for a trim I cannot justify the cost. I love him and have been going to him forever (his prices have steadily increased as he has risen up the ranks) and I am worried about how to confess I cheated on him. I THINK he'll understand.
In my experience, the charges are separate for for each process. If I went in to get a highlight and no cut, it would be less than it was when I went in for both at the same appointment. The place I go to doesn't break it down for me, but I know that my stylist tells the person putting it through all of the stuff that was done at that appt. On their website they list out the cost range for each process (each stylist has a different price they charge based on their experience).

I've never had a cut included with color - it's always been a separate charge. I don't color anymore but I have been to a bunch of different salons back when I did, and they were always separate costs.
I pay $65 (plus a $13 tip, so $78) for a cut, which I guess I'd call a trim because it's the same style each time. It's annoying but she does a good job and I usually try to make appointments on days when I have something fun going on so I can have styled hair. I only go 4x a year because it's too expensive to justify more frequently than that!
This thread is making me think I may never go back to coloring my hair. I have no idea what my salon charges for color but I probably don't want to know.
I would love this but it takes me barely 30 minutes to get a haircut
same, lol.
I had no idea so many people spent such large amounts of time and money on their hair, lol. $40 for a 30 minute wash/cut/dry every 6 months. I am the most low maintenance hair person ever, lol.
Because there comes a point where "going gray naturally" isn't worth the bullshit from people. I got sick of the nasty looks and poor treatment.
Some hair goes a lovely salt and pepper color, but for some people (like me) it goes splotchy and patchy. I gave up the day I looked in a mirror and realized the completely natural back of my head looked exactly like what I assumed was a bad dye job washing out whenever I'd seen it on anther person.
(I do mine at home, but it still takes way too much time and isn't free)

please please please do not think I am judging!! Your hair, your choice!
As I have literally never died or done anything with my hair I just honestly didn't know so many women did, and that it cost so much.

Sorry - I'm annoyed that being low maintenance isn't a feasible option for me anymore.
Most white women would be going gray in a noticeable way by their mid thirties yet you rarely see it. They are all coloring their hair.
I have never had my hair color and not gotten a hair cut at the same time...so I have no idea if it would actually be cheaper.
I have short hair right now, and I hate it, but it is what it is until it grows out. I have actually started to consider going to a woman who specializes in short hair cuts, specifically ones that grow out well. A cut with her costs $300...which is insane...but is it? If it means not hating how you look in the mirror everyday? But then I worry that my expectations are too high so I would still hate my short hair and be $300 poorer. lol
I also think it’s odd that a cut usually has a fixed price. Like if I’m having my split ends trimmed off is that the same as me wanting a complicated cut that requires thinking and risk ?
I have very long hair and get partial to full highlites (usually a mixture of balayage and foils) every 12 weeks or so. I have lived in multiple states over the years and some stylists are SUPER fast with my hair and some take forrreeevvvveerrrrr. I've had salons where I'm in and out in 90 minutes and some where I am there 3-4 hours. Outcomes have always been similar and I've never equated longer to better.
So for me, I'd rather have an honest consult and get the price for the outcome I desire. Not the quickness of how she does my foils or the speed in which my hair lifts.

Well, I'm fine with my salon probably as the basic price at Supercuts Salon starts from $15.00 and above. They also provide offers for the adults of 62 years & above that is Supercut Sr. with a range of only $14.99 and up. Supercuts include haircuts for women, men, children, along with that hair styling, hair coloring, and other chemical services, and many more.
omg, they'd have to pay ME for having to be there for 4 hours.
But seriously, they should have told you up front about their change in policy, and I'd also start looking around for another salon based on principle.
