DH and the kids left about an hour ago - going to visit his family until Monday afternoon. So far I’ve enjoyed a quiet cup of tea and a homemade scone. I need to do some returns, then the purging begins. Hopefully a good balance of productivity and rest.
I have another week “off”, or really “offish”. Which is really nice. My kids are amazing. I feel very lucky that even with minor skirmishes they mostly play nicely together.
We have DS at his neuropsychology testing today. I was pretty much up all night worrying about it. Does he have anxiety? Does he have SPD? Is he dyslexic? Is his tic something we need to see a neurologist about? So I’m pretty much a mess. He’s perfectly fine and the psychologist is really nice. But sheesh. My ability to spiral out of control is off the charts.
mommyatty - I felt very much the same way when DD1 did her testing. But it’s much better to know and get a plan together.
We had to fight a bit, and we still have glimpses of the old ways, but DD1 is so much better now that she’s in meds and working with a good therapist. She is still awful to her sister, but I’m hopeful... and that’s better than I felt even 3 months ago.
mae0111- Part of my sense of sadness is that he’s so very perfect already, he just seems to process things a little slowly or differently than other kids. I don’t know if we are all overreacting or under reacting or telling a perfectly perfect child that there’s something inherently wrong with him. My favorite quote from his teacher is “There isn’t a defiant bone in that child’s whole body. So when he isn’t doing what I say, I know it’s not because he doesn’t want to.” But he’s crying a lot at school when he gets frustrated, and he is really overwhelmed by noise, so I think getting him some help is the right thing to do. I think??? Ugh.
Our ski vacation has gone from not great to worse. Our Airbnb has major plumbing issues and the toilet was unusable and still keeps getting clogged. I missed a half day of skiing to be there and during the first few runs spent time on the phone w the owner and trying to find a plumber on Boxing Day, then going back to the place while it was fixed (but not really)
Conditions were icy the first two day and now it’s raining it’s ass off. The weather looks terrible from here out. Our tickets were purchased in advance. I have two kids group lessons for 3 more days, 7 more private lessons for my little one, and 13 lift tickets all unused that are left.
My smallest ones ski vest broke-we need to buy a new one
His car seat buckle broke rendering it useless so I need to buy a whole new one
My daughter had a lot grade fever yesterday and woke up today vomiting so my husband stayed back w her.
I used my ticket voucher to skied with my oldest for 2 runs in the rain and it’s miserable. He is in his 2 hour lesson (my daughters was a wash-I lost that money.)
This is really depressing. It’s not like we can reschedule. All of it is just shit that happens and no ones fault but I really hate that my vacation I was looking forward to so much is ruined.

We are still laying around in pjs. We had to reschedule Christmas with my family so that’s tonight. We might try to make it to open gym this afternoon.

This is my one day of work this week. I drop DS off at his dad's this evening and then it's a weekend with Beau. We have tickets to see a one hit wonder rapper from the 90's at a dive bar tomorrow night. He also wants to check out a store that my dad told him about which is about an hour drive, so we'll probably check out the store and stop for lunch. I need a low key weekend after a busy holiday week.
It was one of the best Christmas's I've had in a long time. I spent Christmas eve with Beau's family and Christmas day with my family and Beau joined us. Everything was simple and nice, not like years past.
mommyatty - I completely understand your sadness. I’ve gotten nothing but wonderful reports from all of DD1’s teachers about her behavior and her work, other than rushing to finish so that she can read her books. But she was struggling, and I could see it. And I think that she was behaving so terribly at home because she was trying so, so hard to hold it together at school. I mean, there is definitely some other stuff - fierce jealousy and sibling rivalry - that isn’t an issue for your DS, but I really can see the difference with DD1 now.
Just think about how happy you’ll feel if there’s a way to make things a little easier for him day to day.

Just kidding. Did just started throwing up. No open gym and Christmas, take three on Sunday!

Oh no! As a norovirus-phobic person this would ruin vacation for me.
It’s been a whirlwind holiday for us. Normally we just stay home alone for holidays since we live 3,000 miles from family, but every few years we make the trip back and decided to do it this year (before having our fourth kid next year). We flew cross country on Monday, did Christmas with my side of the family Tuesday, with DH’s side Wednesday, and then went on a trip to Hershey Park yesterday. We’re with my sister and her family and DH’s sister and her family, so 8 kids 8 and under.
The kids have been loving the little indoor water park at our hotel. Today we did the Hershey factory tour, then the amusement park, then the water park again tonight. Tomorrow we head back to my parents house and get to do a triple date without kids with the sisters and BILs. My parents generously offered to watch all 6 grandkids for up to 3 hours at one point during our 9-day visit
One really nice thing about the trip is that my parents sold the house I grew up in last year and moved to a much bigger house. Their bedroom is on the ground floor and upstairs we essentially have our own vacation rental - a living room, two bedrooms, bathroom, and closet big enough for DS2’s full size crib. And they made the basement a kids area with an air hockey table, and we got them a Pop-a-shot arcade basketball game for Christmas.
The flight to get here was pretty rough for DS2 though and I’m already dreading the one back on New Years Day. I’m doing it on my own since DH is heading back earlier to miss less work.
We got DS'S ACT score yesterday. He went up FIVE POINTS to a 23. That was amazing! I was getting worried for a while, but I guess he hadn't had some of the material before. He takes his free one in March and will have extensive prep from the school. If he goes up a couple of points, we could be getting some good scholarships. The great thing is he had reached all his benchmarks and can take any college class next year, so for his senior year, he will knock out quite a bit in addition to the 3 this year.
We took the kids to a movies and dinner to celebrate grades last night. Dh spent the last 2 days putting the new stereo, amp and speakers in DS'S truck for Christmas. I dont think he appreciated my selection of Metallica and the Crue to truly show of their capabilities.
We have a party for the game/retirement party/birthday party today which should be fun. Dh goes back to work after 2 weeks off tomorrow.
Redemption! They made snow last night and will continue tonight. We are getting like 6 inches tomorrow. So glad we decided to ski all day on our check out day (day after tomorrow)
It will be stressful to clear out the Airbnb, pack the car and be ski ready for lessons at 9....but it will give isn’t one more gorgeous day on the slopes.
Vacation recap: Tamiflu got DD well super fast. She had a lingering cough but no other issues. No one else got the flu, but DH had it when DD did and he had muscle aches through out the trip- he didn’t see a doctor so no meds for him.
Flight out was super long but went well. We saw Pearl Harbor, hiked Diamond Head (and sweated a ton on that hike), went to the beach and pool. The Grand Islander is really nice. It just sucked getting in after 9 pm because no food and too exhausted to go out.. They said they don’t take deliveries but DH met the pizza guy in the lobby.
Hopped over to the Big Island, went snorkeling twice, went on a coffee tour and saw Volcano National Park. We decided against the helicopter tour because prices were 1200, and I feel really bad about the helicopter accident that happened there because it was one of those that could have totally been us moments.
We ran out of time to do a lot more. Flights delayed on the way home and didn’t get to our house until 4 am last night. Santa came to our house while we were on vacation. And we opened our family presents before we left. Still need to see family to open presents maybe for DD’s birthday/ after Christmas.
My mom complained a ton on this trip and was generally annoying. We love her but the kids don’t need as much help anymore since they are getting older and she isn’t helping as much because she is getting older so this might be our last vacation together for a while. We were bringing her as a babysitter, but they will soon be old enough for us to leave them for an hour or two in a safe vacation rental.
My house is a disaster and I had to work today and tomorrow. But have NYE and NYD off. Happy New Year!
Wanted to add- Christmas is Hawaii is super busy and crowded. However I am glad we went, and not being in the Midwest for Christmas and dealing with family there was great. It’s a long flight and $$$$ though so we’ll probably stick with closer places in the future. But we figured we might not have that many airline points again in the future so better do Hawaii while we can.
