My parents road tripped in and out of CA in Oct during the fires, having the bridge they crossed to come home close an hour later for fire. My sister and her family were in Yosemite then, also monitoring fires to get over to SF for the wedding they all went to.
Now, MIL and her new H are in Sydney with a six hour train trek north tomorrow,.with fires all around. I’m still quite surprised they’re doing the fireworks there tonight.

I believe they’ve asked all tourists to leave the area. I hope your MIL complies if they’re there for personal reasons.

She mostly lives there now. She and her boyfriend did a legal partnership/marriage there. She’s about 2/3 of the way through 24 months of required residency where she can only come back here for 12 weeks max. She’s been in the US the last 11 weeks, did 8 weeks in 2018 and about 18 weeks in 2017. The rest of the time she’s been there. [br
It’s been a very sad shift for us. She has very little to do with us, which was not the case before she was widowed.
Edit- my apologies for my @ references, and then not being on for a day. I’m very sorry and try to be very careful when I’m on CEP. I’m sorry and have deleted part of my earlier comments.
We are in New Zealand right now. We had beautiful sunsets a few days ago on the west coast of NZ. Then we realized it was because of the smoke particles in the air refracting the light and making bright red skies in the evening. Now, a few days later, the South Island of NZ is about 60% covered with smoke. At least here, it is high enough up to not be effecting breathing. If you look at a map, NZ and Australia are not as close as you would think. It’s like the distance from California to the Midwest. So having that much smoke from that far away is really saying something. Imagine Chicago covered with smoke from California. It’’s continuous coverage on the news here.
I follow 1 Million Women (a nonprofit organization of women trying to act on the climate crisis, everyone should check them out), and they are based in Australia. They have been posting about their anger, frustration, and sadness about these fires for weeks. ☹️
I was just reading that one of Nicole Kidman's homes is under threat from the bushfires and then came across the absolutely horrific and devastating estimation that half a billion animals have perished. It's unfathomable and heartbreaking.

Years ago I met someone who fought forest fires all across the US. He was just good people. That people like him are going to Australia makes my heart feel good, and I just hope everyone stays safe. All my atheist prayers to the safety gods on their behalf.
