Per their Instagram account a few minutes ago, they're planning on "becoming financially independent" and "balancing time" between North America and the UK.
Good for them. They can probably actually do a lot more. I’m no expert but it seems like most of the things they seem passionate about and have created don’t really need the Royal life. A lot of the “royal” stuff seems very ornamental and not substantial - the stuff they seem happiest doing just seems more active for lack of a better word. It’s not cutting ribbons and counting engagements.

I feel like this is huge, but I’m not surprised they’re stepping away. I have said from the jump there was something to all the royal feud rumors. When Meghan gave that raw, real interview, they were essentially drawing a line in the sand and the BRF was never going to support them the way the wanted. I am curious how much their lifestyle is going to change, due to living off their own wealth. Does Harry have personal money? Idk how all of that works. It is going to be so interesting to see how this plays out.
In other related royal news, I heard on the radio the other day Beatrice’s wedding will not be televised due to everything going on with her gross father. I do feel badly for her, seeing as how her sister was able to have a televised wedding.

I believe his mother is said to have left him 20M+.
Good for them. I don't think either one of them is happy in the royal fishbowl. And I don't blame them one damn bit. That life has its perks and luxuries, but it also has huge downsides.

I’m happy for them and impressed that they are willing to walk away from the luxury and perks! I think they’ll be much better off away from the BRF and the press scrutiny. It’s a big story right now but it’ll die down eventually and they’ll get a lot of their privacy back.

This doesn’t surprise me. He’s far enough down the line of succession that he’ll never be called on to serve as monarch, and the royal family has been at least talking about culling who would be considered “working royals”. I would far prefer to step back if I were them. The royal life sounds outright miserable. Now they can still live the life of rich people and hopefully have some modicum of normalcy compared to living in a fishbowl.
Oh, and I don't feel bad for Beatrice. She is repeatedly quoted as being her fathers "biggest supporter". Barf.
Same. Did y’all see the York Christmas card that she and her sister signed? Something about being glad to see the back of 2019 and a photo of a dog’s butt. They don’t show any sign of understanding that he did something wrong.

This is so weird to me. Poor Beatrice because she can't have a televised wedding?
I think Charles and William likely wanted to keep them as senior royals (for different reasons) but Harry and Meghan aren’t stupid - it always ends badly for the spare and it’s better to make a life for yourselves and your kids now vs that weird York situation that Andrew set up for his girls. Look how Margaret was basically tabloid fodder when she was younger. It’s a cycle now and if you’re Harry and you have star power and charities you want to support, get out of the bullshit when you have the opportunity before you end up thrown under the bus (which they already had been extensively).

🙄 I was simply saying Prince Andrew has been a shitty person forever and her sister was still able to have her wedding televised. I don’t think she should be treated differently in that regard.
Didn't Sweden basically just cut every one but the direct heir out of the "senior royal family"? It just makes sense nowadays. And can you imagine what the spin would be if it came from the Queen instead of from H&M? The conversation would obviously be that the Queen hates M so that's why they streamlined. This way they get to kind of control the perception. But obviously those that hate M are going to do and say what they want.
I am thrilled for them. They get more control of their life. The RF can't throw them under the bus to distract from other misdeeds. They are clearly a power couple and will be just fine financially.
Very interesting. I wonder if this was always their wish, or if the scrutiny and criticism just got to be too much (the GOMI forums are fucking vicious to Meghan). It’ll be interesting to see what kind of precedent this sets for future generations of the royal family. I think this kind of setup was inevitable somewhere down the line and H&M are just the first to actually do it.
I hate to think that this might be a step to emotionally distance themselves from the “family” aspect of the royal family. It’s one thing if William/et al aren’t thrilled that Harry can just be all “fuck it, I quit” with none of the huge repercussions that Charles or William would face for doing it. Not having actual family support is a shame.
madringal yes Sweden took the HRH titles from the King’s grandchildren out of his two younger children, but they kept their Prince/as and Duke/Duchess styles. I think Norway does something a bit similar, where the Crown Prince’s older daughter is HRH and his younger son is His Highness. They don’t seem any worse for the wear so maybe the Sussexes are following their example.
Also, does this mean she can go back to acting if she wants to?
I think she probably will and she should if it’s what makes her happy.
Oh good. I’ve never actually seen anything she was in, but I’ve long thought that she got the raw end of the deal in having to give up a career she spent a long time building. I hope that if she wants to return to it, this step back from royal duties opens that door for her (and also would respect if she didn’t choose to, of course).

I kinda feel bad for William. He's always talked about wanting a "normal" life like Christmas with Kate's family or not having to wait around until your loved ones die to take the job you've been trained for. He'll never step away from it but I wonder if he's a little jealous seeing Harry being able to do so. Not bad enough, since ya know.. heir to the throne, money, etc.
I hope Meghan and Harry are happy and have really thought this out. I was reading something a few months back stating that if they walk away from being working royals, they also lose a ton of security and relations with the paps. In the UK, there has always been an understanding that the press would leave the children alone but they won't have those same protections in North America or other areas they plan on residing.
Financially I think they’ll be better off. There are a lot of restrictions about how they can earn money if they are full time royals. And maybe that’s not an issue now with QEII or with Charles. But eventually if they stayed full time royals they’d be at William’s mercy and after the past few years it seems like it’d be a lot smarter to break out on your own and make your own $.
What exactly do they mean by “financially independent”? IMO that would mean working or money you earned & saved but I think what they mean is living off her savings and his inheritance vs taking money from the royal family/taxpayers.

I read about this with Diana, how she didn't have protection once they divorced. It is an interesting point.
I would hope that H&M are still provided security detail. I wonder if that is the part where they will "work to be financially independent." And as far as the british press goes.... naively can it get much worse than it already is? It probably can. But hopefully by living in two places the British press can't hound them as much. And the US press is traditionally less vicious. I wonder if they would move to Canada? That would be ideal, I think.

Twitter reports they intend to earn money which they can’t now. 🤷🏻♀️

Twitter also reports they will have new media guidelines and won’t have to accommodate the Royal reporters (whatever deal the Royal Family has with them).

I would imagine they’ll have the means to pay for security like many Uber wealthy people do. Just because it isn’t provided by the palace doesn’t mean they can’t access it.
