Wow. Y'all know a lot about royal protocols. Or you fake it well.
I had no idea that there were Senior royals and junior royals, and based on the status you get supported financially or not. I guess it makes sense that there has to be a cut-off at some point or all the eleventy billionth twice removed cousins would claim the ability to be funded by the public.
But after reading that buzzfeed article, I say more power to them. The double standard is disgusting. I knew there were some blatantly racist headlines, but the microaggressions in the rest of the headlines are infuriating. I'm glad that Harry seems to be standing by Meghan. Yay for Canada.
Hopefully things go well for them here. I was at my Mom’s for lunch and she always watches daytime talk shows and then coming to Canada was the main topic. It’s been estimated that the annual cost would be 1.7M to taxpayers for security and the hosts were debating if that was acceptable. I’m certain they will still face some criticism.

miniroller any chance you can put that pic behind an @ spoiler? It’s right at the top of the page and every time I open the thread it’s right there and it’s incredibly triggering.

So regretful of my thoughtlessness. Posted in my tantrum is not at all an excuse, but thanks very much for your patience😌

I have to be honest, I don’t get the “cut them off completely” from any financial support stance. I don’t think the taxpayers, in either GB or Canada, should be on the hook at all. But I think it is completely appropriate for for Prince Charles to pay all of their security expenses, both in Canada and GB. The entire reason they need security in the first place is by simple fact that Harry was born into the royal family. Moving to Canada doesn’t change that. So, in effect, the royal family are responsible for the need so they should be responsible for financing it. I would think they might even need heightened security for a while since there might be crackpots who hold Meghan responsible for “breaking up the monarchy.”
Also, I know we’re talking huge numbers as far as H&M net worth but I’m wondering how much of that is actually liquid. I believe a significant amount of that is in the form of jewels and real estate (I think he got some Spence family real estate) which he might be prevented from selling due to the historical significance of it. And I get that that still lea be a huge amount that is more liquid but I am assuming their tax situation is going to be ridiculous. If Meghan is still a U.S. citizen, she pays taxes there, they be paying taxes in Canada and taxes in the U.K. I’m assuming that Harry will probably lose some tax benefits that he currently receives due to his income being derived from his philanthropic efforts. If he’s earning a wage from private endeavors, I’m guessing his tax rate might go up. So I bet he’s got $40M on paper but doesn’t have anywhere near that much that he can spend. And he’s looking at many more expenses. I hold the royal family responsible for Harry’s situation so why not hold them financially responsible? At least in part.
With The Queen’s blessing, the Sussexes will continue to maintain their private patronages and associations. While they can no longer formally represent The Queen, the Sussexes have made clear that everything they do will continue to uphold the values of Her Majesty.
The Sussexes will not use their HRH titles as they are no longer working members of the Royal Family.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have shared their wish to repay Sovereign Grant expenditure for the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage, which will remain their UK family home.
Their website has a small update from today and it still says “Their Royal Highnesses.” Is there a distinction I’m missing between that and HRH?
ETA: I guess maybe if this is all effective Spring 2020, they can still use it maybe?
Update: 18th of January 2020 In line with the statement by Her Majesty The Queen, information on the roles and work of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be updated on this website in due course. We appreciate your patience and invite you to explore the site to see the current works of Their Royal Highnesses.
I'm curious about the UK public's general opinion on all this. I'm sure that played a part in the repayment of public funds. What did it say about security costs?
It's very Wallis Simpson isn't it? Except for the fact that Harry would most likely never be King another divorced American.... The Queen must be thrilled /sarcasm.
So they are still prince and duchess? Just not HRH?
Yes. Not dissimilar to what Harry's mother retained after divorce. She continued to be known as Diana, Princess of Wales, just not an HRH. (FTR, Camilla is properly the Princess of Wales but she and Charles use the lesser Cornwall title when together out of respect for popular memory's association of the Wales title with Diana). Harry and Meghan are still the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The article I read said they’re also still technically, by law, HRH. They’re just going to stop using it and ask others to do the same.
They basically just came in and said “Dad, it’s Bobby, not Robert”
The Queen would have to formally strip the HRH title by law, like she did Diana and Sarah after their divorces.

After the queen’s statement there was an official statement from Buckingham palace saying they don’t comment on security arrangements, but basically the needs for personal security will be reviewed.

And Harry isn't the actual King or a Nazi sympathizer and Meghan isn't a Nazi sympathizer. And I doubt that from Canada they'll continue to foment far right rebellion/sentiment. So, it's not at all like Wallis Simpson.
I think this will be good for them. I imagine Harry is not too happy about giving up his military appointment...and really, didn’t he at least work on it, if not actually earning it. It’s annoying that this statement is the time that the queen finally decided to say something about how Meghan is doing. Too little too late lady.
I think it was probably a bad move by the royal family tbh. I want to make Meghan like hugely successful. Suck on that you racists fucks who keep calling her a gold digger or joke that they will be trailer trash now. Ive seen people comment that her $6M net worth she brought into the marriage is meaningless, and that is so frustrating. That is $6m she earned. Every penny. And she will be able to so far more now that she has a bigger profile. I mean, she brought in the $6m by just working on a semi-popular cable network show. Now she’s a-list.

Between 2 very popular members of the royal family making an exit and the Queen trotting her child-molesting son out in public, I think they’re going to have a bit of a publicity issue this year that a new season of The Crown won’t be able to fix.
Like, how hard is it? When given the option to publicly support your trash ass son, just, don’t do that. Even if you support him privately (which you shouldn’t), just demonstrate some basic awareness that Andrew probably shouldn’t be coming anywhere near you in public. Isn’t duty supposed to come before love, or whatever? Consider it a duty not to put him in everyone’s face and smile about it. I know public life is difficult but they make it more difficult for themselves. Damn. Are they just not that bright?

Or they're just trash... I mean she loves corgis and is an adorable old lady, but if it walks like a duck.

100% this. I can understand if she doesn’t accept that her son is a pervert and wants to still maintain a personal relationship but she should not be seen in public with him.

The Queen's father was thought to be a bit of a dolt (which is one reason no one was excited about his becoming king, least of all him), so maybe.

I think that was largely due to his stutter and the public perception of stuttering at the time.

I think he is losing all honorary military titles, not his actual rank. In his career, he made it up to captain but he was promoted to a general rank by the Queen in the marines and commodore in the navy.. He technically left the military awhile back, so he's not losing his personal career appointment.
He also wore his army regiment's uniform and rank for his wedding and not his higher ranking uniforms.
