I have issues with cow's milk and too much soy. I mostly use coconut anyway, but I do try to be as environmentally friendly as I can.
Generally speaking, palm/coconut oil are pretty awful for the earth and the body. I love coconut water, but I still limit consumption due to environmental impact.
Same, we normally do unsweetened, no vanilla flavors. I'm seeing an unsweetened flax+protein by Good Karma available on Thrive Market, I'll have to see if I can find it in a store. It's appealing because the Vit D and calcium are higher in that than in coconut or almond, but that's useless if it doesn't taste good enough to consume. I appreciate the input!
And for people who can’t find it Oat milk is incredibly easy to make if you can’t find it in store. It’s literally just blended oats and milk. Minimalist Baker has a good recipe for it.
Honest question, what is the point of a milk alternative made with...milk?
I got the Good Karma one once and it was ok. I’m not a huge alternative milk fan, and I didn’t like the texture of it it was kinda slimy? Idk how to describe it haha. My favorite alternative has been hemp milk. It’s thicker like regular milk but very mild flavored. Also the pea protein milk is very popular right now. I can’t remember the name but it’s in the refrigerated section.

PS - the word “milk” has lost all meaning.
In my house we call oats with milk a bowl of cereal. LOL

Maybe that’s a typo. All the recipes I know for oat milk are oats and water. I mean I guess yes you could do oats and milk, but like you said the reason it’s become popular is because it’s another non-dairy/vegan option.

Ah ok. Yes, that would make more sense. I thought maybe there was another reason to do a “mostly oat milk” lol.
I feel like we've always known almond milk is terrible for the environment, no? I feel like I knew like 10 years ago that it takes an insane amount of water to grow almonds. Vegans don't want to believe it though.
Maybe I made this up. My memory is shit.
Nope I had no idea almonds were bad for the environment. I really am not up to date on the environmental impacts of nuts in general. I’ve heard the most talk recently about animals being bad for the environment and a little bit of talk about cheese taking a lot of water to make, but never heard much about the negative environmental impact about fruits, veggies, nuts.

Same. I've switched to almond milk assuming it had a lesser environmental impact than dairy; I didn't give much thought to the water, let alone the pollinators. Unfortunately I think all profit-driven, large-scale agriculture is unsustainable in some regard. We're just doing the best we can to choose the lesser of the evils but the number of variables to consider is overwhelming.
I’m vegan and I’m only drinking oatmeal milk. It’s my favorite of all the plant alternatives. I know it’s all the rage now but I’m hoping it’s here to stay.
ETA: I fixed my post I meant oatmeal milk. That’s why I said it was all the rage because it’s gotten more popular in the last year

Did you read the article? Or the thread? This is weird.

Yeah--fuck the environment and the bees. Almond milk is delish!
All I can think about is Chidi from The Good Place.
We use almond milk for the rare occasion we need something milk-like. We don't drink milk, so it's just for baking and oatmeal and stuff. My husband is allergic to most milk alternatives.
Give me the confidence of someone posting, "Killer bees are thriving," and not in a "run away and scream" type of way
nospaekae, thanks for posting your experience. Do you know why you recently lost your hive?
I think my queen died in late fall while during a final mite treatment. There was evidence in the hive that they were trying to make a new queen, but I think it was just too late in the season for them. The mite treatments can be tough on bees, but the alternative is worse.
We think this is exactly what happened to our hive. We're going with a different type of bees this spring.

LOL! Good luck continuing to be a vegan if you want almond milk to stay.

I prefer oat milk to almond. I also like pea protein milk (Ripple brand). My endocrinologist told me not to drink almond milk (even unsweetened) for my regulating my blood sugars when I had GD.
