I'd like to request that we not turn this into a "oh, I NEVER go to the movies because everything else in my life is so much more important" thread because some of us care deeply about this, please and thank you. I'm in a mood. BRB, writing a screed about Little Women.

I'm better than halfway there on seeing every best picture nominee! Just have to squeeze in Little Women, Jojo Rabbit, 1917, and Parasite. None of those feels like a burden, thankfully. (Ahem, Nebraska. The WORST.)
So. I LOVED Little Women. I wasn't sure we needed a... what is it, 9th? film/television adaptation of the novel. I saw the 1994 version in the theater with my mom and had it on VHS and love it to pieces. However, I think Gerwig's interpretation is a perfect example of film as it's own art form. She took the source material and was also inspired by a number of things, from Virginia Wolfe's A Room of One's Own to paintings by a variety of artists depicting the golden light of childhood. She cut and pieced together the story not in the traditional linear fashion, but in flash-back style, allowing her to further connect the themes she was most interested in depicting, mostly about the precarious nature of women's economic status and family.
@@@ That said, Gerwig wrapped filming when she was 6 months pregnant and submitted her first cut 2 days before giving birth. She then spent the summer caring for a newborn and finishing the editing. It didn't make it to the early film festivals (Toronto, etc) because it was still being finalized. I feel like there's a lot of feminist bullshit in that, especially since her partner, Noah Baumberg, made it to all the festivals with HIS movie (Marriage Story).
BUT ALSO. We all know most of the guilds, including the Academy, are still mostly white men (some specialities more than others). Supposedly, even though they receive screener DVDs to watch the films, many men don't want to watch Little Women, because it's a chick movie.
ERGO we have 11 nominations for Joker and no nomination for Gerwig. In a category that only one woman has ever won (for a film about traditionally masculine subject matter) and that has only nominated women a number of times I can physically count on my fingers. In 91 years.

I have seen all of those and I think you'll definitely like them better than Nebraska! I still have to see Ford v. Ferrari, The Irishman, and Joker.

I saw it on Friday and borderline hated the non-linear storytelling. IMO, she did a terrible job of distinguishing "present" and "past." I agree it was a good movie, and the acting was amazing, but all the jumping back & forth almost ruined it for me.
StrawberryBlondie, I thought she did a great job of that, since she and the costume designer worked to distinguish the timelines, the lighting was different (soft and golden in the past, much more white in the present), plus hair styles, etc. Agree to disagree!

Far too subtle, IMO. I would literally figure out "oh, were in the "present" now and then 5 min later realize we were back in the "past."

I have only seen Marriage Story and while I can see why it got an Oscar nomination (among many others), it didn't really do much for me. I was just mad at the characters the entire time.
I really want to see 1917, Jojo Rabbit, Parasite, and Joker. I don't have much of a desire to see the Irishman, but it is just not my type of movie and is long lol.

I'm pissed The Farewell got shut out. In addition to Awkwafina, Lulu Wang should have been nominated for best director and/or best original screenplay. It was the best movie I saw last year, so I'd have liked to see it for best picture as well, but that was always a long shot.
Also, Rocketman was SO MUCH BETTER than Bohemian Rhapsody. It is bullshit it got more attention last year than Rocketman is getting.

I am pissed beyond belief for Gerwig. Little Women is a delight. I’ve watched videos of her dissecting scenes and her process and listened to her interviews about the making of and there wasn’t a better candidate for a director nomination. If a man had done what she had done to a classic story featuring men by making it more nuanced and adding new life to it he would be exalted and rewarded.
And further down the list - "Frozen II" didn't make the animated feature cut. I certainly thought was better than the latest Toy Story movie, and maybe even the last How to Train Your Dragon movie. But maybe my tastes are questionable - I mean, I like "The Last Jedi."

Toy Story 4 was horrible. I am not shocked it was nominated, but it was horrible and for it to be nominated and Frozen II ignored, is shocking, to me.
Also really shocked Glasgow wasn't nominated for best song.
I liked Bohemian Rhapsody. I'm going to be "that person" and admit I haven't watched a single one of the noms, BUT I at least have a desire to watch some of them.

I liked Bohemian Rhapsody too. It was fun and entertaining.

I haven’t seen The Joker but I hate it on principle and I am so very annoyed it got the most noms. The director is annoying AF and frankly, so is Joaquin Phoenix even if he’s a good actor.
Also I wanted a supporting actress nom for Jlo in Hustlers. She was great and so was the movie.
I’m annoyed that Uncut Gems and particularly, Adam Sandler got shut out. I saw it yesterday and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. Intense!
Parasite was awesome and deserves the recognition.
I haven’t seen anything else but plan to catch Marriage Story, The Two Popes, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
I have zero interest in Joker and Joaquin Phoenix.
ETA: Also, no interest in The Irishman. Scorsese made another mob movie? What a surprise.

I agree about Toy Story 4. I was not entertained, nor was I moved. It seemed like a money grab movie for Disney/Pixar and it just didn't land for me at all.

I agree completely with your assessment. It is a master class in how to adapt a work. If anyone here doesn't know about Louisa May Alcott's life story, go to Wikipedia now, because you will appreciate what Gerwig did with the publisher and professor scenes so much more.
While I agree with StrawberryBlondie that it was a little confusing at times as to what time period they were in, I loved the nonlinear nature of it as a story telling device here, because it centered them as women, not as girls.
I did not know that stuff about Gerwig and the film festivals though.
The Joker looks like an asshole's vanity project and also one of the worst movies ever. I cannot believe it got 11 nominations or maybe I can.
