Marriage Story is so well done that I had to turn it off the first time I watched it. It hit SO close to home for me. When I finally finished, I was shocked by how much I loved it. Driver and ScarJo are both fantastic.
I feel like English/Welsh actors seem to do a much better job at a generic American accent than American actors do at English accents. I think because English accents are so distinctive from region to region in a close proximity. It really impressed me.
Eh, I'm not 100% on that. I clocked every single UK actor doing an American accent on Downton Abbey within like 2 sentences. Which is why Matthew Rhys so impresses me. Also, the redheaded guy who played Captain Winter and in Homeland. He's good, too.

Oh man, I really hated Marriage Story with the caveat that I liked the big fight at the end a lot. A LOT.
But everything leading up to it was so...jeez, I dunno, I lived through my parents' horrendous divorce, I don't need to watch Scarlett "I'm a tree" Johansson talk and eat for 6 minutes while Laura Dern looks on.

I hated Marriage Story. I can't even remember the characters names, I just saw ScarJo and Adam Driver. I thought Laura Dern was the highlight. I feel like The Irishman got so many nods because of nostalgia. It wasn't great. I'm very disappointed and bored with most of the nominations.

If you watch Billions you can hear his British accent a few times, although generally he's really good at maintaining an American accent. Dominic West, on the other hand, is a great actor, but cannot handle an American accent. It was rather distracting during The Wire.
I have the AMC A-List membership, so I see a lot of movies. I feel like this is the first year that I don't really have to "catch up". The only BP nom I didn't see it Jojo Rabbit, lol.
Best Picture - I was pretty sold on Parasite even though I feel like it is a long shot. But I did just see 1917 last week, and damn. I really don't care for war movies, but this was really good. Had so much tension, but that tension was released right when you needed it. It had heart. It was beautifully shot. Technically, all of the really long takes were just incredible. But...it also feels like such a cliche best picture.
Ford v. Ferrari similarly surprised me. Again, I don't really care about cars, or racing...but, yet, this made me really appreciate the "sport" of it.
What I liked about those two in particular was that they were able to add heart into a typically masculine story - like Joker and Irishman did the typical "man" movies. All the women were just set decoration. And it was just so clear how there was no woman involved in a majority of the process. 1917 only had one woman in the whole film, but there was still some heart to it. I dunno, it felt different.
Marriage Story had heart, but as I was watching it, I was like, yup...this was made by a guy.
Can anyone tell my why everyone thinks J.Lo was snubbed? I keep seeing people talk about how this was a role that would have been nominated if it had been anyone else...and, I guess I won't dispute it if were talking ScarJo, Margot Robbie, etc. But, as Margot Robbie proves, she can basically just show up and they will throw a nom at her. I think if the JLo role had been played by a B-lister, or even a non-academy darling, they also would not have gotten the nom. She was good. But...just good. I will say that she was better than Kathy Bates or Margot Robbie, IMO, but that doesn't mean it was nom worthy, you know?
Now...if we want to talk about Awkwafina, or Lupita? Or the gal from Knives Out? There were some snubs, but, I guess I just didn't find JLo or the movie to be all that impactful.
Was Peanut Butter Falcon not eligible this year? That was also pretty great.

I was wondering if anyone would bring up Knives Out. It's the one movie I saw in theaters this year. I really enjoyed it. I'm not sure it was Oscar-worthy, but I did think it was quite well done.

We just finished Joker and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I think JP's performance is over-hyped, but I loved the themes of the movie and I'm a sucker for an unreliable narrator.
Ok, so I'm watching Marriage Story and I kind of *really* hate Nicole. I missed some of the beginning stuff, so I think he cheated, but I'm not super clear on the situation, but like, her lawyering up was such bullshit. This is probably super unpopular.
what do you think the age for kids being able to see it is. S has asked (she’s 9 and her favorite movie is Pitch Perfect so take into account I am a bad parent)
@@@my daughter’s 9 and she loved it! You should definitely give it a try!
It always freaks me out to hear him in interviews and remember he's not American. His accent is flawless.

This always fascinated me. Also how there’s so many amazing singers that have come out of the UK and how you can’t tell most accents when they are singing. Meanwhile, I can barely understand some of my relative who live in Wales because their accent are so strong.
Hmmm, from what I read with Gerwig was that you were supposed to believe the love story, just that you were supposed to question if she ended up married or not. Jo was so one-dimensional in the whole movie. I didn't believe her love for her sisters, mother, or Laurie either. Even her love of writing seems more shallow than the book or other adaptations. I know that is wrong to say, but I think it was just cast wrong, which is sad b/c I love Saoirse Ronan, but even Amy was more compelling than Jo (actor Florence Pugh). I was so disappointed that Jo didn't read as a 3-dimensional human much in this version. But I did like that you don't know if she's single or not at the end, but I didn't believe she loved writing or the people she is writing about throughout.
I’ve not watched yet, but I really want to and have been following reviews.
I’ve seen more than a few reviews that praise the ending because it highlights and allows for lgbtqia possibilities for Jo. They talk about how she shares clothes with Timotheé throughout the movie and skews gender norms, as well as how LMA might have also been lgbtqia and wanted to put that in Jo.
I liked the Irishman but I’ve always been fascinated by Hoffa and true story disappearance mysteries are my favorite internet rabbit hole. I saw a roundtable where they discussed the special effects aging and how the actors had to be directed to act the right age, and I can see how it was technically challenging. It’s a good mobster movie where they delve into the personal relationship impacts, similar to Goodfellas or The Departed.
I haven’t seen Little Women yet but I literally can’t imagine not loving it, based on the original story and comments I’ve read.
I thought Toy Story was cute (except for the creepy dolls) and better than the 3rd one, but IDK about award worthy. I still wish Disney didn’t make sequels. S/O Disney, I don’t get out much and clearly have a lot of movies to watch, but I recently saw Saving Mr. Banks for the first time and thought it was award Nom worthy, but googled it and it was only nominated for one Oscar for the music and lost to Gravity.
I forget exactly how, but IIRC, he's somehow involved with the Casey Affleck stuff.
Thank you - I knew that I had read something about Joaquin as well as Casey, but I couldn't remember the details. Will be avoiding the movie based on Joaquin and the director's grossness!
Caveat: I have never seen Girls which may influence my opinion because someone told me that I wouldn’t like him if I’d watched Girls.
I also have not seen Marriage Story but I LOVE Driver in Star Wars. To me, his acting and the story made a villain compelling and generally I find villains somewhat one note especially in blockbusters (hi, Marvel).
Ok I saw Girls (I know, I know). I could not figure out if he was a truly terrible actor or if was effortlessly portraying a complete sociopath. I settled on the former. This is probably why I don't like him. Once you see that performance, you can't unsee it.
Girls was where I first realized how amazing Adam Driver was! I hated him in the first season, but I felt like once I truly understood his character, his actions made so much more sense. I always thought he was just fucking with Hannah, but I think he truly had feelings for her, and that was how he showed it. But yes, he also seemed like a sociopath, ha ha.
I've always loved him since Girls and I'm so glad that he is up for a nomination. I think he really does pick the most interesting scripts/films, and I'm always impressed when I see him in anything!

eta: Oh, yeah, the fight was good!
That's the big controversy of the movie I guess. Some people think Nicole doesn't get a fair shake, because a lot of it is from Charlie's POV, which I agree with. Some people are 100% Team Charlie. I think there was a lot of blame to go around thought.
Regardless, I didn't like it and wouldn't want to subject myself to rewatching it. It was just too uncomfortable, but for no great reason, IMO.

Totally agree with that entire assessment. I actually almost turned it off about halfway through because it was bothering me. I guess that’s what makes it “good” in that it feels really intimate, but I think it was more than I really needed or wanted. I didn’t find it to be a great movie on the whole and won’t rewatch or recommend it. All that said, I really like Adam Driver as an actor and thought he performed well, which is mostly why I went and watched it after reading the thread.
