Hit me with all your methods to increase calories in your older infant. We just left the pediatrician's office and E2 has only gained 2 oz in 2 months, he's 10 months old today. Pedi is mildly concerned but also recognizes that E2 has increased activity a LOT the last few weeks. He said we can monitor it. He did not give me any tips to help with weight gain. I plan to have a weight check in a month.
E2 is breastfed on demand, gets solids 2-3 times a day. He eats frequently but small amounts. He prefers to feed himself but sometimes allows us to spoon feed him. My sister already suggested to skip water in his cup with meals and put BM in it. Any other ideas? boiler717, I know this was something you dealt with.
My kids loved smoothies around that age (and still do). You can add oats, nut butter, etc. for extra calories.
Would sending him articles work to show that the routine helps? I can help find some for you if so!
Thanks for the offer. I've read a few and can pull them back up, but I do need to share them with him. Hopefully that will help. Otherwise, he gets home late a lot, so I may just have to do bedtime on my own and kinda prove the theory. I end up feeling bad though when several days pass and he doesn't get to see L due to his crazy work schedule
Good news, I got the Merlin suit! I can't wait to try it tonight.
noodleoo I’ve been completely out of the house, elsewhere in the house and in the room. It hasn’t seemed to make a difference whatsoever.
SO stopped in the infant room when he picked DS up tonight, and said they seemed alarmed when he explained to them (he was looking for reassurance/suggestions). I’m trying unsuccessfully not to panic. The LC I’m hoping to schedule with was working with a woman who just went back to work and her baby didn’t eat the entire week at daycare.

Girl I’ve got you! So, first thing is to make sure you are avoiding empty calorie solids. Things like puffs, crackers, a lot of plain fruit and veggies. What I did (per pedi and LC) was add fat to every thing I served. I either used breastmilk, olive oil, mashed avocado, nut butter, or homemade beef purée (the only purée I made). All purees got one of those added. Steamed or roasted fruits and veggies were always tossed in oil. Add peanut butter to oatmeal. Spread a thin layer of nut butter or hummus to toast or crackers. I tried to serve higher calorie foods like bananas, peas, sweet potatoes, etc. I would let him feed himself but offer a high calorie purée at the end of the meal.

pooh8402 do you follow @kids.eat.in.color on IG? She has a whole thing on adding calories and healthy higher calorie foods, and is an RD.
But anyways I add fat to EVERYTHING. I like coconut or avocado oil. Fruit, yogurt, toast... literally anything I make I add fat to. Some go to things I make are oatmeal with peanut butter, coconut oil, and hemp seeds (also usually add some fruit to make it taste good). I do the same to plain whole milk yogurt. Higher calorie foods like avocado, blueberries, banana... I used to have a list but I forget it now. It was all from that IG account though.
My baby also went way down on the weight curve at that age, but I also got BC at that time so I’ve always wondered if that had an effect even though it said it shouldn’t affect breastfeeding.
I do follow her but I'm not super active on IG but I'll take a look!
Breastfeeding is still going well here and I still have a good supply (no BC here, and no period yet either) but he's so easily distracted that it is difficult to get him to nurse for longer than a couple minutes unless he's sleepy, even in a dark room. So my fear is that he's not getting enough hindmilk. Even when someone else watches him and he gets a bottle, he only wants like 2 oz instead of the 4-5 oz that he used to take.
BC didn't affect breastfeeding with my first, though I had an IUD placed at 7 weeks PP so...

I just need to pop in and say L slept for over 8 hours straight last night! Help from the Merlin and exhausted from daycare which he decided to only take 2 30 minute naps 🤦♀️
pooh8402 yes to adding oil, butter or nut butter to literally everything. I stopped cooking his food with any water - for example, Mac and cheese was cooked in broth and then had butter and WCM added. My kid was 12M when we started having feeding issues. At that time, our pediatric RD wanted me to offer water only between meals and WCM at the end of meals; she didn’t want him filling up on liquid. Nursing only after meals.
We made these changes and he started gaining again. I’ve been able to relax more recently.

Cooking with broth instead of water is an excellent idea! I already use butter and WCM for the mac n cheese but using broth instead is an easy change. Might make it tastier too!
