My son needs a hard night guard for teeth grinding. Our insurance doesn't cover it. The dentist wants $600 for one. I see options to order one online. Any experiences?
My husband is a tooth grinder and his dentist said the off the shelf ones that you boil/fit would be fine because his grinding is moderate. So I think they're fine if the grinding isn't severe, I think they're just bulkier/awkward.

It might be fine. Or not.
I paid my dentist about 500$ for mine. First he mad one type and spent over an hour trying to adjust it and grind it down, maybe more. Then he got another type made, then time to adjust it. So all told 500$ seems reasonable for probably 2-3 total hours of time plus the actual appliance(s). I was paying for a solution, not a single appliance.
But if the first one had clicked right in and worked perfectly then it would have seemed like a lot.
I would proceed with caution trying to cut corners here. I wore a night guard from my dentist for a decade without a problem, but eventually chewed through it. I got a new one made by a different dentist, and my teeth started shifting right away after I started using it. Within a couple years (in my mid 30s) I was in an orthodontist's office dropping four figures and a bunch of time and angst on Invisalign to fix it. Anything online to save a few bucks would be a hard pass from me at this point.
Never looked online but I have to say I’d drop $600 for one no problem. Any chance your insurance covers any of it? Mine has been life changing. Apparently the grinding was causing me to get headaches which was miserable. And it would also cause me to wake up. With the mouth guard, those problems are non existent now.
My grinding caused me to crack a crown after just 2 or 3 years. The mouth guard is a lot cheaper and less painful than getting that redone!

I've tried the on-line kind that you mold/boil. It was so bulky, I wasn't able to get comfortable with it. I only spent about $20 on it, so maybe there are nicer ones out there that are better.

I am a heavy grinder- ordered one online from Cheeky for like $100 after my dentist one finally died. They have you take impressions and then send it to a professional lab.
Once I got it I took it to my dentist during my 6 mo cleaning and he adjusted it just the tiny bit it needed for free.
I've been using 'disposable' ones from the Dollar Tree. I just brush and disinfect it. It's not bulky, but I always seem to take it out in the middle of the night, which I did when I had the dentist one too, which is why I lost it LOL

I'm looking at ones that are in the 100-200 range that you take impressions and then they make it for you. Hmm...
My bf ordered his online. It broke after about 6 or so months and they replaced it for free without problems. It was around 100-200 range. I can get the name if you want.
I had one several years ago and wound up losing it (don't ask me how). At my recent appointment they suggested a new one. I really did like the one I had before, so I'm going to shell out the extra $400 to get a new one made. I want to be able to keep my original teeth for the rest of my life.

This exactly -- I had one and my dentist at the time told me the ones off the shelf work just fine to keep you from grinding/biting down, they are just big/less comfortable. I ended up getting the professional one but I did use a pharmacy one while I was waiting for that one to be made. I don't think I could have been comfortable with it long term, but if you can find one that's not so bulky, I think it accomplishes the same thing.

Do you have a dog? Apparently dogs love the night guards and routinely steal them.

I did this early last year bc my dentist wanted $1600 for one. I’ve been wearing it nightly for almost a year and it’s been find. The big gamble was the strength I wanted. I’m a clenched, not a grinder, so I picked a soft-ish one, but not the really soft one. They sent my mold back to me, which is weird.
They are a legit company and I would definitely recommend them over spending $600 at the dentist. I had a problem with the fit of mine at first and they shipped it back free and fixed it.

Oh ha I didn't read before posting, but this is the same company I got mine from. I think they send the molds back so if you reorder from them, you just send the mold back and they give you a discount for not having to make a new one.

When I was a teen my dentist suggested a night guard. It was too expensive so my dentist recommended we just get a football mouth guard. It worked for me and I would probably try it first for my own kid.

I wish I had a dog so I could point the finger. lol I had it in my purse, because I at the time I was traveling a lot on business. Somehow it disappeared. I may have accidentally thrown it away?

My dentist suggested a night guard for me too (I'm a clencher and get headaches) and I didn't want to shell out the however much she wanted to charge. I got the kind that you boil and wore it for 2 nights and that's it. It's so bulky that I couldn't sleep. I thought to myself that I was glad that I didn't pay all the money just to hate wearing it.

My dentist suggested the boil ones. But I’m up a zillion times a night with the baby and think it would annoy me too much. So I’m ignoring the problem.

My son wants to ignore it but he has completely worn down the tips of his canines!

So the professional ones are less bulky?
It’s not bulky at all. I get up, take the dogs out and feed them with it still in. I don’t brush my teeth until after dog duty, so I just wander the house with it. No worse than a retainer. It reminds me a bit of invisiline in bulk, maybe a bit larger, but not much. Not like a boil mouth guard for sports.

Yep! I'm also a clencher that gets headaches. The ones I've tried are too bulky but I got an impression at my last appt and I believe it goes just over my front teeth. I get it on Friday. Mine was only $80 after insurance.
