Houses in the city are generally cheaper than in the county if you are looking. Houses in my neighborhood often top out at $200k and we are only about 10 minutes from 95/895.
Is he still looking for other work? That commute is brutal!
I've noticed that! You can get a lot more in the city for the money.
He ended up accepting a job at the same place he's working now, so he'll be there for at least a couple of years. Realistically I wonder if he'll always have better options in that area/closer to DC, honestly. For the types of jobs he's looking for (research without a teaching component) it seems like there are a lot of organizations for that are further south than we are currently. So, we are considering Columbia/that general area. It seems perfectly nice but... it's not the city
It’s a shame he can’t get a job at the army proving grounds or somewhere else north. My husband worked at APG for years and his commute was only about 30 minutes because no one is heading north. Honestly he could work in PA or DE for less time than than it takes him to get to work now.
Columbia is fine but sort of blah IMO. I don’t know anyone who lives there without kids. Lots of shopping and restaurants though!
H and I are seriously considering selling our TH and moving across the state. We have a consultation with a realtor scheduled for Sunday so we know what improvements we need to make and what range we can expect to sell at. And we have a tentative weekend planned for house hunting in a prospective city in March. Cue the freaking out. We have lived in the Seattle area for 10+ years. Basically since we graduated college.
I just saw that Chris Stapleton is going to play and also have Jason Isbell and The Highwomen at the show. It's in Chicago in August and I am SO FUCKING HYPED. I've already got H on board to go.

I just hate the parking situation for him! He drove straight home from a meeting at NIH yesterday and it took him just over an hour, during rush hours. The need to take a train from offsite really throws a wrench in everything. I guess I'm just repeating what I've complained about before, lol.
He was actually offered that job in Baltimore, but turned it down! It did pay less but would have been a way better commute. He just didn't think it was as good of a fit for his career, which is legit I guess. I'm all about the quality of life stuff myself so it would have been hard for me to pass that up!
It's hard to know what the future will bring job-wise. He'll have the option to stay put after his post-doc in 2 years or might look into other options, and those could include things further north! Being newer to the area I'm guessing we're not even aware of all the companies that are in the general region. I guess that's probably a good reason not to buy something right now. I just hate moving and don't want to have to keep doing it! We're getting too old to keep up this lack of stability.

I wondered about that job! I think i would have taken anything to get rid of that commute and kept looking/did it for a year or two. Don’t people move into different areas all the time?
I guess you never know if they might open up some parking or change things around that would help. That whole situation is absurd.
When we bought we basically just looked at places close to the highway. I worked in the city at the time so that was easy then we both ended up working North. Now he’s downtown and I’m working at home it still worked out. I can’t imagine wanting to move so frequently! If I ever move again it better be like out of the country or something.
I really hate when people comment on what I'm eating. Yes, I'm having a bagel, and yes I'm going to the gym later to work it off. Leave me alone people.
calamity, the bold part has been bugging me all day (and I was already aggravated, lol)--please know that you DO NOT have to add the second part. IT'S NOBODY'S BUSINESS if you're going to go to the gym to "work it off". Eat the damn bagel, love every bite, THE END. SHUT UP, RANDO HATERS.
How does it affect random commenters AT ALL if you eat the bagel and/or what you're going to do later (or NOT DO) re: said bagel? NEWSFLASH--IT DOESN'T!
I feel bad that this shit is so ingrained in diet-culture, and that a) we, as a society, feel the need to "defend" our choices, and b) people STILL IN 2020 feel that they can say judgy shit to people about EVERY.LAST.DAMN.THING. SHUT UP! MYOB!!!!!!
I wish I could have bagels (I LOVE THEM) but flour-based carbs make me feel so sleepy these days that I just pass. ::sobs::
What kind of bagel was it? I loved sesame ones, whole oat and egg bagels in a previous life, lol.
I don’t see why not. The teacher said she was being a monster, so I think it’s fair.
This is one of the things that makes me the most anxious about DS going to preschool in the fall. There’s one kid in his “Kids Day Out” class (for 2 year olds, one day a week for 90 minutes, I stay with him) who is VERY aggressive. DS is mild mannered and reserved. This kid has hit, pushed, and jumped on top of and mauled a little girl during these sessions. Pushed a kid off of a chair. I need to ask how they handle this in the preschool sessions.
Lots of redirection. They will observe the aggressor to find out their trigger and work to avoid it or help them cope. Sometimes if a teacher is leaving the room to do checklist type tasks they might take the aggressive student with them as a helper. A teacher may take the aggressor to do some sensory activities if needed etc. My SIL is a preschool director and sometimes an aggressive kid visits her in her office and stays till they calm themselves, then return to the room.

I think it's hard with research to get a good job/career if you jump around too much. You kind of have to build an area of expertise, and build up a body of research around it, and drug addiction just isn't the direction he thinks he wants to go. I do think the job he took fits his interests a little better and will help him build expertise in an area that should give him a lot of options later. But this is also why I'm not a PhD person or a researcher - I tend to prioritize things like paid time off, commute, work environment, etc over the actual job
Moving sucks. I haven't lived anywhere longer than 4 years since I graduated high school (and that was only 1 place that I was in that long!) so after 20 years of it I'm not excited to move to another rental knowing we'd move again in a couple of years. Ugh.
@wilrice, I live in the Columbia/Laurel area and used to commute to Bethesda near NIH. It's an hour to an hour and 15 both ways, so not awesome. But much too far from Baltimore! My husband has an advanced degree and a specialized area of work and we moved a bit around the Baltimore metro area. He's now just outside of DC and goes in VERY early in the morning to make his commute work. I think the challenge in this area is that there are good opportunities, but they can be "just 20 miles away" and it would mean a very long commute. We do like the Columbia area but have kids, so your mileage may vary.
I fell on my bike today I landed on my left side and My left wrist/forearm are still hurting. But it’s more of a throbbing than the sharp pain I would expect if I broke it.
We really need to get on child proofing since Ds3 is inchworm crawling pretty quickly now. SLOW DOWN BABY
I went to Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory because a caramel apple sounded perfect. I just took my first bite, and the apple is really mealy. I am sad.

I'm full of them again today. DH moved/dropped and broke a frame with a picture of my brother and I in it that we have in our home office. Granted it was on top of the bookshelf, but I don't have a lot of pictures with my brother. He didn't tell me, I went to look at something and saw he moved it so he could build a little shrine of work related stuff. I wouldn't care so much if 1. he didn't know I openly won't have a man cave or room with that crap 2. he told me he was going to do it and 3. ever framed something special from my work about a year ago as a gift. He said he would do it, and now I don't know where it is. It's a stupid, petty thing, but it just rubs me wrong way that his stuff is special, mine gets lost.

Thanks! That's the exact area he will be working (not at NIH but Bethesda). He's actually there already in a different job, and has been leaving at 6am every day to avoid traffic! It is crappy. I work just north of Baltimore, so there is no great solution but it seems like Columbia might be the best option.
Columbia seems nice! I haven't spent a ton of time there but when I've visited it seems like it has lots to offer. I've actually lived most of my life in suburbs and/or smaller towns and I do think Columbia has a lot more than any of those did, so I'm sure we could be happy there. I've just always had a dream of living in a city and I've FINALLY achieved it, and enjoyed it a lot, so I'm hesitant to change back already.
Then again, after being carjacked last fall I'm always on edge in the city and maybe in the suburbs I could relax a bit. I still think the benefits of the city outweigh the safety "risks" but it is frustrating being nervous to leave my home in the dark. I think moving to a different neighborhood in the city might alleviate that too, though.
If you happen to know a good realtor in your town, would you mind PMing me?
I was trying to be all responsible and update the google groups we use to coordinate volunteer stuff (I took them over last year and mostly ignored them), only to discover the settings are all jacked and users with non-gmail email addresses can't actually see the groups, and all the Google help documents are absolutely worthless in getting the issue fixed.
I've been fiddling with settings, reading forum posts, and contemplating the issue for over a week now, and I thought I'd fixed it yesterday, but one of the women told me today it's still broken for her, and now she also can't send emails to the group, so apparently I've made things worse. Auuuugggghhhh!!!
Icedcoffee, a bit TMI but I also typically sleep with no pants/shorts on. I've started to worry on shift night if God forbid the chief's car ever pulled up, or we had a robbery that I'd have to get up and put something on before I could deal with whatever's going on. It's somewhat irrational but I'm with you good PJ pants are hard to find, esp if you carry weight in the tummy/lower stomach area you have to go up in size. The leggings were just right not too hot/not too cold. I'm also totally going to wear them next time we fly even though I don't think I have the fit for public leggings, so much easier!
Tacokick, taking care of parents is so hard, esp in that situation. I'm glad she's getting so much PT, it makes a huge difference! So frustrating when they don't get, or care that you work and have other things to do. I see my dad once a week, maybe every other week, but it never feels like enough. You can't go to a hospital with a fever either. I'm always here to pm and commiserate if you need it.
I only travel in leggings, and will normally wear a skirt/dress over them while I'm traveling. So then I'm comfortable but look dressed up, lol.

Yes, you are so right. I see this particular coworker at the gym all the time, so maybe that's why I felt the need to defend it?
And it was a toasted sesame bagel with scallion cream cheese and it was amazing!
