OMG!!! YES!!! I studied in Tuebingen - one of the best years of my life!! I haven't been back in...almost 20 years. A DD in the old city center?! So weird.
thanks for the suggestions and insights!!
Haha! Cool! Yeah, it got built up. I’m not sure if you were by WHO, but Cucki’s (Kucki’s?)is still the same. The whole area by the French Quarter (too lazy to spell it, even though I still live in Germany, lol) got really built up. The Kaufland is like a mini-mall and there is a drive thru McD’s (gasp) now. I studied there 15 years ago. I was too poor when I was there to eat at nice places there, but the Maultaschen place up on top from the old city is still amazing (checked it out last trip). Kalendar is always great for Kebabs. I haven’t seen Tangente since I studied there. Most of my classes were in the Brecht Gebäude.
I’m in Bavaria (Munich), so if you need a place to crash, I always welcome those from Eberhard Karls! Just bring some Maultaschen please, lol!
Omg I miss Maultashen!! I was just looking up the Neckarmuller brewery to see their menu. My parents still talk abot the Saurbraten there, it was the best they've ever had (and they've had alot!)
I lived in a super old (and not updated) dorm on the east side of town not far from Bebenhausen, but I had friends that lived at WHO. I hope it's not all built up in my mind, but I remember it having so much charm. Not sure it's worth staying overnight there or just a day trip, but we will def go! I can't wait for some good Doner!! you're so sweet to offer to let us crash there (not sure if we'll do Bavaria yet!) -Tuebingen holds such a special place in my heart and I think everyone who studied there says the same!
I'm not sure if anyone has posted about this. I love driving in other countries and I also really like taking the train. They both offer two different experiences. I love that when you take a train you can take a slow or fast one, drink in the drinking car or have a meal and enjoy the ride. I also like that you are usually in the city center.
Driving a car is fun, European roads are usually awesome, but that comes with sometimes having to pay for parking and paying for toll roads which can be unexpected an expense. I did a road trip through Spain and ended up paying $30 on some tolls and $40 a day for parking in a deck in Barcelona which for us wasn't worth it.

It’s not totally built up, but it is different. It still has the same charm. WHO is not built up. That’s where I lived most of the time (I was in the French quarter the other part of the time).
ETA: Neckarmuller doesn’t have the best Maultaschen. I meant that place by the church where you have to climb a dozen stairs. Hotel am Schloss? I think. Go there and you won’t be disappointed. Not a bizzle!

I think the combo of driving and trains is good. One thing to consider when buying tickets for trains between major cities is that the prices can go up significantly the closer you get to the date, like airfare. So when you know your plans, book early. We recently did a spontaneous weekend from Amsterdam to Paris via train and paid at least 4 times what we would have paid if we had booked 6 weeks in advance.
