Well, now you do. So if you ever get into a home and see major cracking (especially any horizontal cracking on walls, vertical cracks often aren't such a big deal), unevenness, or anything that just doesn't feel solid, it's worth the peace of mind to hire a structural engineer to check on those concerns.
Buying a house sounds scary lol. We are hoping to buy something this summer and I hope our realtor is really knowledgeable because neither of us knows much of anything about houses.
Sorry if this sounds rude, but a lot of realtors know very little and home inspectors are not great either. I’d hire an engineer for a huge investment that a house is.

And often the home inspectors are in cahoots with the realtor. My best advice would be to use your best judgment, be as skeptical as possible and don't get emotionally tied to the house before getting professional opinions.
Also--if the inspector says they notice settling, but can't render an opinion on it because they're not structural engineers you should....hire a structural engineer to render an opinion. LOL
ETA: Basically--don't be afraid to walk if you feel like your concerns haven't been answered.

All of this. We had a realtor who conveniently knew a person for everything, inspector, guy who could fix your deck or re-do a bathroom etc., no I want someone independent so they don't push an issue on me for a commission. You can negotiate and say that you want the seller to have the issue investigated or fixed or you're walking away from the deal.

You know what really chaps my ass? At least (the very least) VC knew enough to say she was ashamed of what she did/said/broke bread with.
Meanwhile joenali comes in here all whistling Dixie, bold as brass, without a shred of remorse.
When she literally left saying she “couldn’t be here for heavy drama” (racists targeting posters here is just internet drama, right?) and “people should be more vigilant with their private information” then comes here begging for T&Ps and telling us all about her personal medical struggles.

I don’t know if it’s the same in all states, but you basically have to pass an exam to become an inspector. It doesn’t require a lot of knowledge and just from personal experience of selling my home and reading two different inspectors reports, none of the same things were mentioned. There are great realtors out there, but a lot of them just don’t know the structural information or any real big issues unless they’re obvious. They’re also working on commission, they want to sell and love on. I’ve been working with a lovely realtor, but she knows nothing about structural stuff, easements, etc. you’re definitely on your own and I would rather spend money to check further then assume anything.

Like, bitch pick a lane.
Oh boy. Let’s resort to name calling.
Many of you are seemingly great people, some of you haven’t changed. Don’t worry, I’m not leaving any time soon. It’s fun to read up on things, ask for advice, commiserate, etc. i haven’t begged for any thoughts and prayers. Trust me. Just advice and you know maybe some support from others who have gone through the same thing.

Every time this comes up you get defensive and just plain snotty. Have you considered apologizing or actually hearing what is being said to you? You flounced out and came back months later as if nothing nothing had happened, and seem to expect it to never be brought up.
Yep. And she had the audacity to ask me for medical advice multiple times (in posts and via a PM). I’ve been nice about it ugh, but fuck that. I’ve never forgotten how she dug her heels in about the issues that us Black & Brown posters face while she’s just here "for fun" and it’s not "that serious." Yet comes here for advice and support. Rage. Prime example of white woman fuckery.

I don't find this to be true at all. I've been a broker for 20 years and I've never been in cahoots with the inspector. I would never want my buyers to purchase a house with major issues for a variety of reasons. First, I'm an honest, ethical person and I would feel terrible. Second, I don't want to get sued. Third, I want my clients to be super happy so they use me again and tell all their friends to use me. Fourth, I don't want bad reviews. Yes, there are some bad apple agents out there, but most would agree with what I wrote here.

Yes, it likely varies by state, but I sold real estate in Ma for many years and we actually can’t refer an inspector, never mind be in cahoots. We can list like four or five, in no particular order, that we’ve heard of or heard is good if a client asks (new to area and doesn’t have a local person to refer them), but we cannot just say call so and so. At all.
Even if we could I have morals etc, I’m sure many don’t and that could be why there’s rules like that. So there’s no question.

How would you feel if the things you go through, including infertility and advice you asked about was deemed to be "not that serious"? If you’re here just for fun and not serious discussion then why do you discuss those things? So while you have chosen not to understand the issues surrounding race that have been discussed here and the things that those of us go through on a daily basis, you could exhibit a tad bit of empathy (I certainly am not asking for your thoughts & prayers). But clearly some empathy is too much to ask for and you choose to show your ass instead.

And clearly this is not something that wanderingback should have to continue to point out.
