I hope people fill it out online so that they can minimize the in-person follow-up.
We got ours but I'm pre-emptively annoyed about not being able to enter any LGBT data so we haven't completed it yet. I'm probably going to do it so my wife doesn't have to deal with being incorrectly gendered.
I wasn't 100% certain what to do for the race/ethnicity questions. We're white, but then it forces you to add more details (i.e. Irish, German, English, etc). Both H and I are a big mess of many things in Europe, so I just answered the things that I *think* we're most of? But I have no real genealogy or anything to back it up other than "Your grandpa was all Irish except for 1/8th French" and all of those family stories.
Not just you.
We were surprised by it and had no idea what to put. We are all a mix of various European countries, presumably, but don't really know. The ones we do know are down to like 1/16 so not very meaningful anyway.
Well, and not only this, but we are guessing! My DH, until he recently did 23andme, thought he was 50% Norwegian, 50% Italian. Except it turns out he's 50% Norwegian and 50% every-other-european-ethnicity-EXCEPT-Italian. Such a strange addition to the census.
I did it yesterday. It took all of 5 mins online. I think the official docs looked a little bit informal for what it was. But was legit and I made sure it wasn't a scam.
I'm glad to know it's pretty quick!
Also thanks to all for the heads-up on the origins question.

I guess this will be something fun to add to my to-do list As a Black person I certainly don't know my ancestry.
And does anyone else not remember doing the census before??? It seems like there's a big push this time and I don't remember that last time. 10 years ago I was in med school in an urban city, so I would assume they would want as many people counted as possible, yet I definitely don't remember filling it out.

If you were in school, your school probably filled it out on your behalf.
This is the first time it’s being done online so that’s another reason they are pushing it hard too.

Really? Interesting. I didn't know that was a thing! I thought the point was to get an accurate count of where people lived. I didn't live in the same county as my med school. But I also don't remember my ex-H getting one at the time either. I do have a bad memory, but I think I would've remember this, ha. Like I don't even remember it being heavily in the news and I think I was decently plugged in at the time. So odd. I guess I could go back to old P&CE posts and see what people were talking about then as I'm sure the census came up on these boards.

I was in college for the 2000 Census and I remember a Census worker at my dorm pushing super hard to say that the only correct response was to give my residence at my university since I lived there more than 50% of the year. I still think that's wrong since I was officially a resident of a different state, voting and paying taxes there and not where my university was located.

I did ours yesterday, and after reading this I paid close attention. On that screen, hit continue with it blank, then when the page reloads you can hit continue again with it still blank and it accepts it. I wouldn't have paid any attention at all so thanks.

Oh! Assumed you were living there. I do know dorm students get counted by the college; same type of counting happens at places like nursing homes and prisons. There’s a word for this the Census used but I forget what it is.

I did Italian and Irish for H because he’s 50/50. For me and DS I put an because I have no idea what I am. I know there’s a little French in there somewhere but beyond that 🤷‍♀️

I think they're pushing it harder this time because a) Social media has made it a little easier and b) there was all of that citizenship fuckery, so they're working extra hard to ensure that people know the facts.
I am involved with an org doing some GOTC (get out the count) work, and they mentioned that the census budget was frozen at 2010 levels. This administration does not want people filling it out.
I did ours on Friday. I was annoyed though, it is addressed to our correct address except DENVER, we’re in a suburb with the same zip code, I hope that we get counted for the correct county, etc.

Ours finally came and when I went to put in the number to fill ours out it said it wasn’t a valid key. Finally I called the help line and they said that’s been happening. I could fill it out anyway without the key apparently. From the perspective of someone who spends a lot of time looking at census records for genealogical purposes, I was disappointed at how little information was collected. I haven’t seen that littler information since the mid 1800s when they started asking for everyone’s names and not just head of family.
I noticed this too when I filled it out for our house and it made me so mad. So many things that I fill out has more than just a male, female option. So disappointing that the census doesn’t.

I dont know if you recall this but they were all set to collect more inclusive gender info as well as sexual orientation info on this 2020 census...and then Trump pulled the plug. Sick.

I’m so glad it’s online. Especially now that census workers aren’t going out. I filled ours out last week online and it was so easy.
But I am embarrassed that I had to ask my boyfriend what his ethnicity was. I knew 1/2 Filipino, but I didn’t know what Northern European mix was the other 1/2. I am also really excited that we might get another representative for our state - fingers crossed. One is too few for an entire state.

The census worker was correct, college students are supposed to be counted at college.

Yes. You also should vote and file your taxes there if you are a resident for more than 50% time, which more college students are. For population, the small college town I lived in for a while reports 100k, and half of that is the student population.

I just completed ours.
It was noticeable and odd that in the year 2020 they only have two options for sex: male or female. It's pretty well-accepted at this point that not everyone fits into that binary.
