Because DC is not a state and does not have a governor, the power to summon the DC national guard, as well as to ask other governors to send theirs, rests with Trump, not with our mayor.
Trump deployed the DC national guard, and has been calling other governors to send theirs. So far, we have troops from Utah, Ohio, New Jersey, Maryland, and Tennessee roaming our streets. (Virginia, Pennsylvania, NY, and Delaware have declined). I just read that Florida has also said they'd be sending 500 people, who I think are coming today.
ETA: Now West Virginia is sending troops too.
Nobody here wants these troops. They are not needed. The minor squirmishes and property damage is nowhere near serious enough to warrant the level of military presence that is here, and things get more peaceful every day. The mayor wants them gone. They are scaring people. The noise from the helicopters has not stopped in days, and people can't sleep. Military vehicles are all over downtown. Random barricades are being erected for no purpose. They are building an even larger perimeter around the White House, complete with large, dark fencing.
The city is essentially occupied by the military right now, and there's nothing we can do.
If you live in one of the states that has sent troops, can you please call your governor and tell them to get these troops out of here?
I am so fucking angry about this (former DC resident). It already pisses me off that Congress can and does put their nose in DC affairs but this shit is infuriating. Trump is putting together a military occupation in the only place he legally can and because the Mayor said mean things to him over the weekend.

In addition to there being all these out of state national guardsmen here, there is a strange assortment of men who look like either law enforcement or military, but refuse to identify themselves, aren't wearing badges or name tags or other identifiers. They are just patrolling downtown. People were able to figure out yesterday that at least some are from the Bureau of Prison's riot control squad from Texas and San Diego, but nobody has confirmed where all of them are from.

So it really feels like we are being occupied.
It's really scary and to me, another reason why DC should be a state. I also want to know why these people can get away without identifying themselves. There's chatter on Twitter that some are related to Erik Prince. I honestly wouldn't be surprised. Fucking Barr, man. I want that man in jail.

I have voiced my anger in this. Unfortunately, Lee will continue to kiss Trumps ass. They are in talks of moving the GOP conventions to Nashville. I don’t think we will pull our guards back. Lee is pro anything Trump says and very anti protesting.
NJ people, where did you find the phone number to call? I’m having difficulty tracking it down.
I actually emailed too, but it looks like here is a phone # 609-292-6000
And yes, I agree that it probably has a lot to do with the coronavirus aid. Supposedly, NJ troops are only there to protect monuments and buildings, but I think that's a tough distinction to make:

Thank you - I called but their mailbox is full. I emailed earlier and I also tweeted the governor, lieutenant governor, and the NJGov account. I left voicemails with Sens. Booker and Menendez.

Mailbox is still full. I’m pissed. I emailed but that’s not nearly enough. I’ll be calling Booker and Menendez as well.
All of the CBP folks are wearing their issued uniforms, which are clearly marked. The majority are Border Patrol Agents, and in comparison to the NG folks, the numbers are small.
