I put this in our other thread. We are in person, but cases are rising, so I have a feeling we will be back to online learning. 1. I am still traumatized by elearning and trying to work at the same time from the spring (and I had a very understanding boss). 2. I have no childcare. 3. I am sure this will all happen the day before, so we will have no time to plan. 4. I am happy I am not paying private school tuition to just be online though (no offense intended). I just don't want to pay money in order to suffer more.
Well the plan is out. 2 days in person. 1 day virtual and 2 days of reading, assignments. I can't even. This sounds horrible. I am so sad this is th heir high school experience.
Our plan came out. Virtual through 9/25, with a decision made for the rest of the semester on 9/11. Also starting a week and one day late.
Small in person orientations for 6th and 9th graders before school starts as well as elementary and preschool kids.
Blah. Expected, but still. I’m not great at teaching so I hope the teachers actually teach instead of just posting work that the parents have to teach so the kids can get it done like they did in the spring.
Our public school district is proposing that k-3 go back in a hybrid model. Grades 1-3 will go to the newly build middle school (so combining 6 elementary schools into one building.
Grades 4-12 will be fully remote until at least November, when this will be re-evaluated.
The largest district in our state has announced that each school can decide what they want to do, as long as they follow the safety guidelines. Should be fine. Can’t imagine that could cause any issues. 🙄
For my county in Maryland, we are virtual with a review at the October 10th Board of Education meeting. There will be more actual teacher led training sessions. My daughter is entering middle school and they will be having a virtual orientation using Microsoft teams.
Our school district is doing a hybrid solution - 2 days in class (M/W or Tu/Th depending on your last name) and 3 days remote. Remote days are asynchronous. Teachers are available for questions/extra help on Fridays. Every student gets a Chromebook. All classwork uses Canvas. Families can choose cyber school, if they wish. It will be asynchronous. First day of school was pushed back a few days so we start on a Monday (Aug 31st).
Every school district in SW PA is different. My nephew goes to the city public school and they are online for the first 9 weeks. My niece goes to a neighboring district and no decision is made yet. Another neighboring district is 5 days in class with a cyber school option. Apparently they had enough students select the cyber school option so they are able to social distance in school.
1. In-person - 5 days, full time. Our state's department of ed had advised 3 ft of spacing, down from 6, but most public school districts are aiming for 6 ft. At our school, desks will be placed 4.5 ft apart. 2 grades won't have desks, just tables with shields between the kids... of course, those are my kids' classes. So masks required, sitting in a plexiglass booth. No movement to different spots, lunch in classroom. 2 mask breaks per day (which could be snack and lunch). So my ADHD kid and my not-yet-diagnosed but definitely demonstrating some attention issues kid should do fabulously...
2. 100% remote. This was painted as "We have to offer this, but it's not going to be as good as being at school. So you should be at school. Because we're kind of phoning this in." It's clear to me that there will be no focus on this from a teaching or an administration perspective. Our state is even in discussions with online schools to handle much of the online instruction, rather than relying on the existing public school teachers. So this will be an afterthought.
So... I'm paying tuition for two horrible options. I was really hoping for some kind of hybrid option - small classes, live streaming, splitting the in person and the remote. The principal must really be under the gun to open this school. There's a wait list for literally every class in the school right now - preschool - 8th grade. It's a 1950's building - HVAC system isn't great. The kids will be jammed in there on top of each other.
I'm almost in tears trying to figure out what to do.
