Your kids may be tall enough to use equipment too. With winter coming and indoor places we normally go for fun in winter out, it sealed my decision to buy a spin bike. My DS1 will use the Peloton I just ordered (eta Dec 21st). My younger 2 will be able to do the kid classes. I'm hoping DS2 will do the yoga and that it may help with his ADHD. DH plans to use the bike as well. I think we will all benefit from consistently having a way to burn off energy no matter the weather.
This is a really great point that I hadn't considered!

I get the Peleton love, but I've tried spinning and it is just not for me. I sadly quit my gym (that I loved and went to 5 days a week before this) finally in Sept. and ordered a treadmill. I got a good ProForm one, and it comes with iFit videos/workouts. I've used it at least 3 days a week since we got it, often more. I am doing the couch to 5k program, so I 'run' on it, but when I get tired of doing that, I break it up with the iFit programs (love the different locations) and often 'hike' or do their 'run your first 5k program just for something different. I can save my own manual programs, and when you use a program it automatically changes the difficulty and incline for you. It is in my basement and we have a tv down there, so I do watch tv while doing it too...and on the days when I just can't get motivated to run, I still find time to go walk for a little bit. My kids also use it too, which is great. I've also added a rowing machine I got of fb marketplace for super cheap and a core plank board, so I do feel like I get a decent workout in most days. I wait until my kids are logged in to their first official thing of the day (dd has synchronous in the morning, ds is asynchronous after a hr meeting until after lunch, so I have him start his first asynchronous assignment and make sure he knows what to do if he finishes) and MOST days I'm able to get in a 30-45 minute workout without them needing me.

I like spinning but I need to keep myself motivated. I knew it wouldn't matter whether I got the expensive Peloton bike or a cheaper alternative, so I decided to go for the Schwinn IC3 with the $12.99 Peloton app. We have a Roku TV downstairs and it has the Peloton app. I enjoy it a lot but didn't want to spend the $$$ on a Peloton bike. We just bought a treadmill for my husband and I plan to use it for walks when the weather outside is bad.
I never loved spinning, but I got a Peloton last year and LOVE it. Completely hooked. We bought an inexpensive TV to mount and an Amazon firestick so we can cast the bike screen on to the TV for other types of workouts. They just started bike bootcamp classes too.
We also have resistance bands, a ton of free weights, and TRX straps. I will incorporate TRX work into my Peloton workouts (ie: do rows or pushups using TRX as an alternate).
The additional (non-spinning) content in addition to the bike workouts is what made it worth it for me.
I really want a rowing machine. Costco has one in store (couldn’t find it online) for $400 that I am seriously considering. Edit: they also had a stationary bike for $400 if you’re into that and want use the peloton app.
I only like to run outdoors and don’t enjoy stationary bikes, but I enjoy rowing and can see myself doing that consistently.
Was the rower iFit compatible? If so, I heard good things about it in my iFit Facebook group.
We bought a waterrower at the beginning of summer. It's very quiet and has a nice aesthetic. It's an efficient workout, but it was also very hard for both of us because we were so out of shape. I barely made it 2 straight minutes the first time, but have now worked up to 20-30.
We have since also received a Peloton through their Comeback program. Neither of us did spin before, but we're both now obsessed with the cycling classes. There are so many instructors that you're bound to find a few you vibe with and the playlists are fantastic.
I have to admit I've barely used the rower since we got the bike, but my plan is to start alternating between the two once I reach 100 rides, which I'm aiming to do by the end of the year.

Even if you don’t have the bike, the Peloton app is great for all kinds of workouts. I like Beachbody a lot too. I’ve worked out mostly from home for a long time so my basement gym includes: Peloton bike, weight rack with dumbbells up to 35 lbs., bench, some kettlebells, Yoga ball and resistance bands, sliders (use those for certain workouts), giant wall mirror and TV to stream. Some days I just jump on the bike and pick a workout - to me that feels like the simple choice, I’m in one spot the whole time and don’t have to take out and put away equipment. I just ride along and work as hard as I feel like. Other days all the equipment is out and I’m all over the place. I like having options. I’ve never enjoyed the elliptical or treadmill so I don’t ever see me having those. I’m trying to figure out a way to hang a bag for boxing though!
My preferred exercise is running, which I do year-round in all weather. I also found out that I love spin when I was pregnant. We cancelled our family gym membership and our Peloton will be here in about 2 weeks. I was only using the gym for spin class, which was really hard to fit into my schedule, so I think the Peloton will actually make more financial sense for us. You can definitely go cheaper - I looked into alternatives that seemed impressive, too.
I also used to like the Sweat App (Kyla Istines). The workouts are less than 30 mins and most don’t involve any equipment. You can find most of them without subscribing to her app if you want an idea of the program.
If you can't swing the Peloton cost or aren't sure you can justify it, go for the Walmart Echelon Sport Connect dupe ($500). I have this plus the $12.99/month Peloton app and I love both the bike/rides and the cost savings. I have a holder for my iPhone to use on metrics and have it connected to an old iPad for the App. I just printed off a resistance conversion chart I taped to the wall. If you don't have an extra Ipad you can get the app on Roku and your tv. I'm normally a runner but I find there's a lower barrier to getting my butt in the saddle.
I would start with an app and see what you like and can do consistently. We bought an exercise bike out of the blue and totally love it. Then we bought outdoor bikes and use them a good bit. We have a great trail system in our town so we can ride without much worry for cars. You may find that you enjoy the indoor bike. I hate running and it hurts my knees but the low impact bike feels like a good workout for me and I can do it forever and watch tv 🤣
As much as I like the peloton bike in theory, I didn’t like that I couldn’t pause workouts or move the screen to another part of the room for floor workouts.
This is exactly why I got a Bowflex C6. On the Peloton app, you can pause classes. And since I'm using an iPad, I can work out wherever!
I converted an open loft on our 2nd floor into a home gym. I've been slowly adding equipment over the past few years: NordicTrack bike and treadmill, TRX (which I LOVE), a Bosu, hand weights (4 lb - 20 lb), and kettlebells (15 lb, 22 lb, 30 lb). I would like to add a barbell and start lifting that way, but they're a little pricy so I'm going to wait until next year to buy. I definitely use all of this equipment and work out on a more regular basis than when I had a Planet Fitness membership.
There are a lot of You Tube videos with TRX and strength (weights) workouts.
I got a membership to obe fitness on a free trial at the beginning off all this and ended up loving it. There's a ton of categories (pilates, barre, hiit, dance, strength) so I've stayed occupied doing it for 6+ months. Workouts range from 10-60 min.
I also have a bike trainer that I use 1-2 times a week but I get bored any more than that.
abs, we have basements. My brother lives in AL now and doesn't. After having a basement all my life, I have NO IDEA what people do without one! I"m mystified. We have so.much.stuff in our basement storage area!
If you've got a free trial option, I'd definitely try it! I had historically been a total "oh there's tons of free options with fitness blender, etc". The free options are definitely still great but something for obe clicked for me and I really look forward to do the classes, especially the live classes with fun themes.

The link said "free trial for you and a friend." I am happy to try to figure out how to do the "for a friend" is anyone here wants to try it and doesn't have an amex. I can't promise i can figure it out, lol, but I did sign up for the trial for me yesterday. I think the live classes will make a difference for me, too.

I hope you like it! All the instructors have codes for a free month too. I think it's currently their name +100 (Katherine100, Dorian100, etc)

Thanks! I know everyone is different but do you have any particular classes or instructors you like?

Lately favorites have been: HIIT: Tiffani or Dorian (Tiffani just left but she's got a ton of replay classes) Barre: Katherine Sculpt: Madelaine (sometimes her dance too if I'm in the right mood)
I've also been working through the Hard AF program which has forced me to try some other instructors and power. I finally found heavier dumbbells because I've been liking power classes and also bought Pilates sliders because it turns out they're an amazing ab workout.
