I read the Enola Holmes series over the weekend, which is YA fiction, and liked it a lot. There are crimes to be solved but no real violence and absolutely no sex or even romance. Very much a message of female empowerment.
ETA: I was mad that the Netflix version introduced a romance, which was not needed.
I wish there were some great series for older kids that weren't all sci-fi/fantasy. If anyone has any recs I'd love them! DD loves a good series but other than Harry Potter she is a no on everything mentioned here. Her preferred genre is realistic fiction.
How old is she? The track series by Jason Reynolds is a great Realistic Fiction series, it starts with Ghost. There’s a great series about 3 friends that starts with Raymie Nightingale. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is still popular and so is the Princess diaries series. There are a lot of Mystery series. The Truly Devious series is fantastic, but I would say 12 & up for that one.

Thank you all for such great recommendations. I guess her media teacher is having them listen to Percy Jackson in school, so after looking at some of the suggestions she picked Keeper of the Lost Cities, but I will be holding on to this post for the future. Thanks again!!

She is 10. I will check these out, thanks! Some of her favorite books are Front Desk and Miscalculations of Lightning Girl. Ghost sounds right up her alley!

There’s a sequel to Front Desk called 3 Keys. Another amazing book that is similar to the ones you listed is Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus and there’s a sequel to it too. And it’s not a series, but get her The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise. It was my favorite book last year.

When looking to support black owned businesses I found a bookstore, brave and kind books. They have a lot of great stuff and I got DD both of the books your daughter likes (she also loved keeper of the lost cities). Happy to share some of my daughters other favorites we got from there. One is the unteachables by Gordon korman. Another was when you reach me by Rebecca stead. Happy to share other recs if you’d like. www.braveandkindbooks.com/
ETA has she read the Raina Tagelmier books? Graphic novels that were big hits with DD and her friends

My daughter is 10 and my son is 13. Between the two of them they’ve liked-
Hunger Games (only my 13 year old so far) Anything by Rick riordan - both of them loved all of his series Wings of Fire Grey stone Secrets - only two books out so far but my daughter is obsessed Nevermoor The Giver and the sequels My daughter loved my old baby sitter club books but has moved on from that
I’m sure there are more but I’m drawing a blank
ETA - my son just recommended The Graveyard Book (which is a standalone book that he loved) and the Vietnam series by Chris Lynch which is about the Vietnam war - he’s very into history and learning about wars.
Brandon Sanderson is a fantasy writer who generally writes for adults. But, he does have 5 out of 6 books written in series (the 6th book is supposed to be out late this year or early next) that he suggests is good for anyone over 10YO.
Commenting to be able to save some of these suggestions! But also wanted to chime in that DS1 is 11 and just finished the first Hunger Games book and he loved it. I was worried it’d be a little disturbing to him, but he had no problems at all. Not a series, but he’s also recently read Orphan Train and Pax (they were part of a book set from Costco) and liked them both.

OMG! Ghost by Jason Reynolds--I just read it with my middle school Book Club! Great recommendation--loved that book. It is 4 books, each about one of the new members of the track team. Ghost, Patina (female), Sunny, and Lu.
abs, what about the W. Bruce Cameron's A Dog's Purpose (3 books)? Or, does she like graphic novels? Has she read any of Telgemeier's books? Telgemeier also illustrated the reboot of The Babysitter's Club, all graphic novels (I think there are 6 of them). James Ponti has a great adventure series: Framed! Vanished! and Trapped! (all set in Washington, DC). City Spies is another Ponti series, there are 2 books out currently (set in Scotland).
A humor series that my students like is Dork Diaries by Rachel Renee Russell.

notsopicky, I will look into A Dog's Purpose, thanks! She does like some graphic novels. She has read every single of Raina Telgemeier's books appromixamtely 18,000 times. As a general rule though she doesn't love graphic novels because she reads them so fast.

What's a good age range for Orphan Train?
Sorry, I typed the wrong one. It was Orphan Island and the age range is 8-12.
