I do think each state doing their own rollout makes sense because states have different demographics and population concentrations and going from eligibility being 75+ to 65+ might not be a huge jump in some states, but might be in others and may cause too much demand. I don't know any specifics, and I'm sure some states could be doing a better job, but I don't think it's the worst idea to let states choose how they rollout. I'm sure it's really frustrating to be in a city near a border, though.
I was feeling pretty annoyed with state differences, because my 65+ parents still can't get one in the state they are in - but if they were here, they'd be fully vaccinated.
Then went to look at a chart from NYT that showed number of shots given and percentage of population and it's not as big of a difference as I thought. And actually the state I was comparing with has a higher percentage of population vaccinated than mine. It's frustrating that there is such variation in who is getting it, but looking at numbers helped for me.
Yep perception is everything. Thanks for sharing that graph.
Half the country would be at least partially immunized (this doesn't seem to be able to really forecast with J&J) by mid May which I think is pretty miraculous since the vaccine was only authorized late Dec! And we seem to think that 1 dose provides a good amount of protection as well from serious illness and death. And more and more data is coming out about T-cell memory and not just antibodies in regards to the vaccines, so all and all good news.
And that’s if we only maintain the current rate of initial doses in arms. Supply will increase. So as long as the infrastructure is there and the demand keeps up, the weekly rate should also increase.

Also, everything else was dumped on the states from the jump. This is actually the one pandemic-related effort that makes sense to leave to the states.

True. They probably could have done a better with this if there had been more federal support with other things.
My parents both got their first doses this past week. WHEW.
I am in the process of getting cleared to volunteer with my county's medical reserve corps, which are the medical and non-medical volunteers who are helping with everything from contact tracing to running testing and vax sites.

I'm officially vaccinated! J&J for the win!
I was thinking about the perceived "slow rollout" on my drive today. And I think part of that perception stems from the fact that we've been in this pandemic for a year. Like, a year ago, when they sent us home from work they told us to plan to work from home until April. Then it was, well, until the end of the semester (mid-May). Then it was well, you may as well work from home this summer b/c all classes are online. So anyway, here we are a year into it, and nothing has changed. And I think everyone just wants it to change back to pre-COVID times like, RIGHT NOW! And, now we hear about this vaccine, and it's so amazing and will make such a difference, but it's not immediate. And that's frustrating everyone. On top of the issues between states and cities and counties and how each one is administering it differently. And very few people at this point have any patience left, so of course people are trying to game the system. Which, while I wish that weren't happening, I can't say I'm surprised.
wanderingback , sillygoosegirl , noodleoo , thank you for your insight. Makes sense that it's perception (demand far exceeding supply) and the lack of transparency--maybe even confusion, w/ every state having a different way of rolling it out, rules, etc.--plus the Hunger Games-esque appointment roulette, e.g. website navigation.
I have complained about PA a lot. Honestly when you look at figures we are doing ok, but I think with a large population the number of people impacted is obviously magnified. I do think over time things are improving, but to the poster who knew all kinds of people magically getting calls from doctors, etc yes that does happen but by and large that is not the experience for most people. The Philly Inquirer has covered a lot of issues over time with the PA rollout (don’t forget the Philly fighting Covid debacle). There is no central registry it is a hunger games style plan. People who are not tech savvy, not primarily English speakers, and people who are living in disadvantaged zip codes, people who don’t have regular medical providers are absolutely are missing out. The rules for Philly vs. the rest of the state are different. Data is shows the shots are disproportionately going to rural areas and that proportionally many more whites are getting vaccinated. I personally feel a lot of people are “line jumping.” There was recently a technical glitch impacting certain Philly residents at rite aid so these disadvantaged zip codes people were not allowed to register.
On the PA vaccine hunter site half the time they are telling elderly people to drive to cvs in border states like MD and DE to get vaccinated because of what a shit show it is here.
One of the big problems is a lack of transparency. Having a Dem Governor does not mean he is doing everything right! I’m hoping by Nay things will have turned around here, but those saying there are not issues in PA now are speaking from privilege.
I agree with this. And the fact that Allison Beam continues to appear like she is not willing to divulge any information at all to anyone is not really helping with the transparency.
That said, PA does seem to be pushing more vaccines out in the past two weeks, so that's good.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
I thought I’d post re: side effects since I had dose #2 of the Moderna vaccine yesterday. I’m a bit tired and achy, but the clinic I worked at yesterday was outdoors and it was in the low 40s and windy. Sunny, though, thankfully! So 7 hours on your feet (and 18,000 steps) in those conditions could for sure make a person feel a bit run down. I also noticed I have a swollen and tender lymph node just under my clavicle on the same side I got my shots.
I got J&J vaccine today on an hour’s notice. A friend was at a pharmacy getting hers and I guess there were a few no shows, so she asked if I could haul ass down there. I offered it to my husband, but I was ten minutes closer to the highway, so I took off and made it. Easy peasy and so far so good!

That’s awesome. I’m a day out from J&J shot now and absolutely zero side effects. It could not have been easier!
I have been trying to get my dad an appointment. I found him one and didn't realize I needed all his flipping insurance info just to make the appointment through CVS. You should be able to make the appointment and THEN enter the insurance information. My dad lives in AZ and he won't have his phone turned on while he sleeps so basically I can't book the appointment. This is dumb.

I booked an appointment for DH’s Aunt via CVS and I just filled it in with made up info and she was still able to use the appointment.

Ha. It says to make sure it is real because it will be saves to the account? I am worried they will care because AZ and AZ is dumb

Are you sure it’s needed? You don’t have to have insurance to get the vaccine, but people that do have insurance insurance will reimburse the people immunizing $25. I haven’t made appointments through cvs but I’ve helped make appointments for several friends and even though I know they have insurance I said fuck that and just skipped through it so I could make sure to reserve an appointment. I would just put in random numbers if it won’t let you skip that section. If cvs is requiring insurance that is really fucked up.

No, it says it is not required. It just asked for Medicare, Insurance or a SSN if you don't have insurance. I mentioned in the previous it says it is saved, so make sure its accurate. Do you really think I can just put in gibberish? It seems odd doing that for Medicare.
People switch insurance all the time. Or someone could make a typo. I don’t think your dad will go to jail if you put in incorrect info.
Okay. I put in a dummy number. I will have him call and update the info. Hazzah!
I went to CVS yesterday for my shot. The person in front of me had not put in any insurance info. The lady giving the shot asked if he had his insurance card. He said no. She said ok, what arm do you want the shot in? So, at least in my experience at CVS (not in AZ) CVS isn’t super concerned about insurance info. So he may not need to call and can just take his insurance card with him.

Great. Thanks. I am so excited. He is 84 and has really struggled with the process so I am glad I could find him one.
