My mom is a former teacher, retired a couple of years ago. Some of her close friends are also teachers/former teachers. She also lives in a small-ish town that has had something like 5,000 cases the past year and 100 deaths. And something like 75% of those deaths were in nursing homes unfortunately.
Anyway, they were all virtual until about a month ago. Parents had to choose between continuing virtual or in-person. One of her friends told her that in-person classes at the middle school were 2-4 students. They had more students show up the first week, but then the students/parents thought it was too much work so they switched back to virtual I’m sure there are so many students who haven’t done work in a year. I can presume we’re going to see increasing numbers of kids working to make money for their family instead of completing high school. I wonder what GED rates will look like over the next few years.
Ugh all of this is so horrifying. I can’t tell you how many adolescents I’ve talked to with health concerns that they weren’t able to address because they aren’t in school so don’t have an excuse to talk to the school nurse or stop by their doctor on the way home from school or get a pregnancy test for example. So many steps backwards in a variety of ways for youth.
Do you have any data of teen pregnancy rates over the last year? Decreasing or increasing? Our abortion fund helpline has seen a decrease in funding to <18 year olds but a huge increase in our funding request in general.
I am terrible at waiting for symptom based covid test results.
I’m breezy when we do the test - I want to be safe, play by the rules, but the chances are so low since we are careful, blah, blah. But as the day(s) goes on, I convince myself it’s going to be positive and we’ll be on lock down for weeks.
We are in the same position right now. DD is full on sick, fever, cough, congestion. We had her tested first thing Saturday morning and still haven't heard. I finally placed an amazon fresh order for staples but I want to know if we are stuck here for the next 2+ weeks.

Also waiting. DD came down with a head cold on Saturday and was tested this morning since we couldn’t get an appointment yesterday. Now we have to wait for her negative to get cleared to send DS to daycare. He is bouncing off the walls because he’s not sick.
Apparently I just needed to write in here. We got our results, negative. Now I can go to the grocery store.
I feel like the results never come in until I’ve hit full ‘blarg’ The slowest results were the time I was most sure she didn’t have it. lol. Today they rolled in just in time for frantic running around to both report the symptoms but also document the negative so her sister could go in.

My MIL got her first vaccine dose this morning and booked tickets to come visit us once she is fully vaccinated (plus 3 weeks for efficacy.) I’m a little worried about her flying (from FL no less) but she’ll be able to quarantine for 7 days upon arrival and then will be staying with us for 2 weeks. I am beyond thrilled for her to meet J for the first time. It has been so lonely for my wife not to be able to share him with any of their family. 😭😭😭
And yes, I’m judging us for encouraging someone to travel for what is technically “recreation” but I honestly don’t even care anymore. We have given up so much. I just want this one thing.
Moderna will start testing vaccines in kids from 6mo-12 years!!
It’s so nice to come in here and see “likes” on this compared to news articles where everyone is just badmouthing parents who would sign their kids up for trials. I’m grateful to those who are willing and able.

DD just asked if she could participate (website says they aren’t enrolling right now)

I looked into the 12+ trial (can't remember if it was moderna or pfizer) for my kids but it was too far away. I'm all for vaccinating as quickly as possible.
