When my husband graduated med school, I got him an engraved leather folio with his name/title on it. He still uses it 15 years later. I got it at Things Remembered, but now there are some really nice personalized options on Etsy and elsewhere online
To be honest I’m not a very sentimental person and your son doesn’t sound like he is either so I’d stick to practical stuff.
Moving is so damn expensive and you usually don’t get paid until August. I’m sure my parents would’ve helped but I didn’t want to burden them so I took out a 10k loan in between med school and residency to cover moving costs, first month rent, groceries, etc.
I do have 1 nice-ish pen that’s engraved with my name that I still keep in my purse that I honestly can’t even remember who gave me. But otherwise frame, etc would not be something I want/need.
So what about gift cards for food delivery? Cleaning service? Pay for a uhaul? Blue apron? Etc. Can thrown in some coffee and a water bottle into a back pack and call it an intern year survival pack or something like that. Intern year can be especially brutal and then ER in general with shifting from day to night shifts so black out curtains, eye mask, ear plugs, etc might also be helpful.
Congrats!
Thank you for the ideas! I will definitely consider some of these things. I do already help him financially where I can, but I know he's mostly been supporting himself with student loans the last 4 yrs.
Yeah the financial strain of med school and residency is not talked about enough, especially the transition in to residency. It’s great that you’re willing to help out with a gift, so I’m sure he’d appreciate anything you could provide to help the year even a tad bit easier.
What about one of the big 32 oz yeti? You can engrave them, maybe with his name? Not doc or anything, lol, or his favorite sports team? There are tons of options. Then you could do the rest in practical monetary gifts as suggested.
Does he drink coffee?
He's a huge coffee drinker.
I will have to look through everyone's suggestions. I appreciate it.

He lives with his girlfriend and they split the bills, so at least he has help with that stuff. Unfortunately he does all of the grocery shopping and cooking. I'm hoping she steps up and helps with that when he's working long hours. She also has to find a job where they are going. A lot of changes in a short amount of time!

I’m blanking on the name but there are meal services that deliver ready-to-heat nice meals (vs blue apron where you have to cook). Something like that might be nice while they’re adjusting to the new schedule and workload.

I have one and I really like it. You don't have to stand there watching it to pour water over the grounds and you don't get the gritty sludge like you do with a French press. I grind a mason jar's worth of coffee and use one of these lids: masonjarlifestyle.com/product/stainless-steel-storage-lids-caps-with-silicone-seals-for-mason-jars/ I'm over grinding fresh every day. I'm a klutz and the silicone sleeves are great for protecting the jars. I use them on the jars that I use as water bottles but thought I'd mention it in case it's helpful. I get klutzier the more tired I get. They also have a measuring scoop holder that goes on the side.

Duh I forgot mofongo, could help too. Changing gears to the money thing. Practical money makes the most sense when you move, and/or start working 80+ hours a week. Perhaps a mix of gas and food gift cards or grocery stores in their new area etc? Not as personal, but they'll sure appreciate them.
