A billionaires' tax — an entirely new entry in the tax code — that would affect roughly 700 taxpayers with over $1 billion in assets or $100 million in annual income for three consecutive years.
A 15% corporate minimum tax on corporations with more than $1 billion in annual income.
Details: The billionaire tax "would impose the capital gains tax — 23.8 percent — on the gain in value of billionaires' tradable assets, such as stocks, bonds and cash, based on the original price of those assets," the N.Y. Times' Jonathan Weisman writes (subscription).
Biden re-nominated Jessica Rosenworcel to the FCC and designated her as chairwoman officially. She's been acting chair the last 10 months. She will be the first woman ever to be FCC chair (not acting chair).
He also nominated a longtime public interest lawyer, Gigi Sohn, to fill the commission's fifth seat, which has been empty since the end of the previous administration. She co-founded Public Knowledge and was part of the FCC for several years during the original net neutrality rule setting, then left in 2016.
Assuming these move forward in a timely fashion -- and they'd better, because Rosenworcel's current term expires at the end of the year and then you'd have a 2-1 Republican FCC -- I would bet we're going to see something significant in terms of either net neutrality, Section 230 reform or maybe both, in the next couple of years.
The Trumper incompetence is funny until you notice they are competent enough in the one place that matters: getting elected and destroying our country. All the failure in the world doesn't get rid of the judges they appointed and damage caused. And it may win in the next election cycle. I laughed too much in 2016.
ETA: thanks for sharing that! I just am over here in an abyss of cynicism. Don't mind me. lol.
I know this is still a huge bill, but it’s starting to feel like…wtf is left?
There are so many damn things left in the bill. The framework is a little messy but on the healthcare side we got Medicaid expansion federal fix (this is my life’s work so I’m pleased even though the policy mechanism sucks and it’s short-term), @maternal mortality, including postpartum coverage, and possibly RX although I dont have details yet. In every category, including housing, @children and families, food security etc we had some gains and some losses.
If this gets through it is still overall a HUGE win. It’s not a done deal yet. Hoping the Biden presser this morning lights a fire. He’s under the wire because he leaves today.

I know, it’s still a good bill. I’m reading through the White House statement now, and it’s making me feel better.

It is a really good bill. It sucks not to get everything we wanted, especially in reconciliation when we have a majority and it’s idiots in our own party who are blocking us. But there is so much to celebrate here. For today I’m happy. Not with Manchin and Sinema though, they can kick rocks.
I am so angry about this. I want my party to represent my interests. My interests do not include coal mining or billionaires.
ETA: seeyalater52, thank you for the voice of reason here. I am getting so frustrated and it was helpful to me to see your take on what's still in there.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
I can't tell you how proud I am that pre-k is still in since my work aligns with this very issue. This is HUGE! Just reflecting on where we were a decade ago with child care to now is so amazing to witness. Rep. Swalwell said Paid Family Leave is out but we need to come back with a larger majority to get that through.
Mr M and I have been going back and forth about the difference between bad bills and compromise bills and sorting out our feels. Good news is it sounds like some progress and maybe on a personal note, we’re growing as people?
Here I thought I couldn’t get more disgusted with Sinema. Her ego must have its own gravitational field.
Did you see the denim vest the other day?
are we mocking her wardrobe now or is this some reference I don't get because I don't have apple TV? If the first, please no. If the second - well fine.

Is a vest even allowed on the floor of the Senate? They have a jacket requirement. Does a vest count as a “jacket”?

It’s an interesting philosophical question but I feel like focusing on what female politicians are wearing is a slippery AF slope and I don't want to be on it. She’s giving us so much else to work with.

I don’t think it’s “mocking” to call out how inappropriate her attire is, especially on a day where she would be presiding.

Yeah, I agree. But, I would be equally annoyed if a male senator showed up in jean shorts and a button up.
She’s so awful and I feel like dressing this way to preside over the senate is just another FU to her constituents and the rest of the American people. Like a visual of how casual she is about tossing democracy down the drain.

I know we give Dems a hard time for messaging so I want to throw Biden some kudos for his press conference this AM. He said, essentially, that any one of the things addressed in this bill would be significant alone but together they are really important. He’s right.
I’m just skimming the health portions of the bill language now and several of these things we have been trying to move for yeeeeears. They’re really big.
- Medicaid expansion in non-expansion states authorized as Marketplace coverage (with wraparound) through 2025 -funding for Medicaid home and community based care -funding for Medicaid coverage for people re-entering the community after incarceration
@@@ - Medicaid benefits for a year postpartum - permanent extension of children’s health insurance program (!!!!!) - kids can’t be kicked off coverage for 12 months even if family’s income changes
@ And then there’s the extension of the enhanced child tax credit which has made incredible gains in reducing child poverty.
Huge, people. It’s not everything but it’s so, so good. And there’s a big fight to be had getting it over the finish line. I know we are all sad about the things that didn’t make the slash and burn and that’s not wrong but today we have to FIGHT. We will be back for the rest later, including all the Medicaid expansion stuff we didn’t win because we were hoping for a permanent authorization of actual Medicaid coverage and we got…. Not that.

I don’t think mocking it is right, but I personally find it absolutely inappropriate for where she is. A POC could never get away with that.
re: wardrobe critiques - I think I can get on board with a general disappointment in casual dress in a venue where it doesn't belong, but "did you see the denim vest" gives me vibes of mocking the clothing choices to a level beyond, "wow, that's way too casual for the floor."
Generally I am of the opinion with seeyalater52 that getting into the nitty gritty of a female legislator's clothing choices (or anybody's physical appearance really) goes bad places fast.

My comment wasn’t anything beyond “that’s not appropriate wardrobe for a US Senator at work.” If she was doing something else on her free time, or even interacting with people outside of the Senate, I would’ve liked the outfit. But working on the Senate floor comes with a certain level of decorum.

OMG! This will really transform lives. Thanks for the work you do seeyalater52

Quote from a colleague from another national organization today, just for more celebratory context:
@@@@
“I will say that with these provisions this is the best federal law for kids in my more than 30 years of child advocacy. Better than the big child auppprt bill in 88 or the EITC expansions.”
