Rather than thinking of it as giving up your Sunday, think of it as setting yourself up for a successful & enjoyable trip on Monday. I know that I would be miserable and useless for work stuff if I had been up all night on multiple planes and getting through airports.

I love a direct red eye. But if I have to layoverā and work the next dayā I would not do it at night. Maybeā¦ if one leg was 5+ hours. I fly Seattle to Boston frequently (well pre-pandemic) and this is my preferred flight.

Nonstop allll the way. With all of the Omicron-short-staffing causing havoc with flight schedules, on top of regular winter weather issues, no way would I choose a layover and risk delays/cancellations that cold leave me stranded mid-transit.

Maybe itās being a mom* but spending a day drinking wine on a plane while zoning out to music ā and then treating myself to a nice meal and a hotel bed all to myself ā is definitely NOT my definition of āgiving up a Sundayā ha.
*Because I donāt know about the rest of you, but my Sundays are usually a combination of taking DD to her activities, getting some exercise and then doing laundry

I don't even have kids, but yeah it doesn't seem like a big deal to me. It's not like an actual travel day is the equivalent of having to actually work, in my opinion.
OP, if you don't want to leave on Sunday then don't do it lol, take the other flight. When it comes to these kind of decisions I literally wouldn't care what the board said (so I would never poll the group ) if it wasn't something I didn't want to do.

I donāt think Iāve ever actually taken a red eye before so truly didnāt know which was better! Iām also probably just salty at my employer for a bunch of other unrelated stuff and was feeling kind of resentful I have to travel on a weekend day. There would be no question of taking the daytime direct if it was a weekday, lol. Iām going to work to reframe it in my mind to a nice kid-free break and prep so I can get the most out of the training.
Oh! Now Iām all sorts of confused lol Someone asked "Are you saying your options are nonstop during the day Sunday or a red-eye Sunday night?ā and OP said "correct."
Well if OP doesnāt want to travel on a Sunday and the other flight isnāt a red eye then go for that!

I donāt know who is wrong, but someone is lol. The first post says itās an overnight layover. Which is not the same as a red-eye.

An overnight layover is like the exact opposite of a red eye, lol.
Ok douche, go ahead and call it mud. My husband DID have halitosis. We addressed it after I talked to you girls on here and guess what? Years later, no problem. Mofongo, you're a cunt. Eat shit. ~anonnamus
I would for sure take the daytime flight, direct or not. Iād catch up on podcasts on the flight. Iād spend the extra afternoon sitting in the sunshine, eating tacos, and reading a book. Then Iād take an extra long hot shower and sleep like 10 hours before working Monday.
Thatās, like, the opposite of āwastingā a Sunday.
I probably caused the confusion, I was using red eye to mean overnight flight. Which it was, with an early morning layover. I actually just looked it up because I was getting confused and keep seeing its slang for an overnight flight, originally meant to indicate direct from east coast to west coast but now used to indicate any flight that leaves at night and lands in the morning. Either way, I booked the daytime direct flight and appreciate all the input!

Gotcha! I don't know the technical terms, but I assumed OP meant the flight leaves late at night, flies through the night, lands in the morning where there is a layover then she gets on the next flight to the final destination. I have no clue what that is technically called, but seems close enough to a red eye to me!
It wouldnāt change my answer but now Iām really curious to know where the layover is.
There were actually a few options, JFK, Newark and I think Atlanta.
I think you definitely made the right call with the nonstop. I donāt know about Atlanta, but that Seattle-NY flight isnāt long enough to sleep more than a few hours, and then thereās a very good chance the Orlando leg could be delayed. Or even if youāre not delayed, the hotel might not let you check in before 3pm. Going from that to a training session sounds miserable.

Not that this needs to be hashed out but I think this is correct. She said an overnight flight from Seattle to JFK or Atlanta then an early morning connection to Orlando. I would most definitely consider that first leg a red eye.
